Both are members of Britain’s Royal Air Force: He an upper=class much decorated Anglican ex Battle of Britain fighter pilot and she. a lowly conscript of the Woman’s Royal Air Force (WAAF), daughter of a Jewish working-class London family whose main function on meeting is to serve refreshments in the officer’s mess and whose paths would not normally not cross. Unwittingly, for reasons unknown to them both, they develop a magnetic and romantic attraction. The book also describes the environment of their romance as they saw it in immediate post-war devastated Berlin. After returning to England, they marry. One of the invited guests who was a volunteer Jamaican navigator who served during the Berlin air-lift. He, the scion of a wealthy influential Jamaican family, offered the couple the use of their beach cottage in Jamaica for their honeymoon. They accept and the book then describes Jamaica as it was in pre-independence days and the couples enjoyment of the gift. Ulterior motives then emerge for the reason of this generosity; the need, after independence of Jamaica for the need of a replacement BOAC resident airline manager. The post is offered and after debate, accepted by the couple. Arrangements made, they then migrate to Kingston where the book ends with descriptions of colonial Jamaica as it was then and the happy outcome of the unlikely officer’s canteen romance.

Book excerpt: The conventional opposition of scholastic Aristotelianism and humanistic science has been increasingly questioned in recent years, and in these articles William Wallace aims to demonstrate that a progressive Aristotelianism in fact provided the foundation for Galileo's scientific discoveries. The first series of articles supply much of the documentary evidence that has led the author to the sources for Galileo's early notebooks: they show how Galileo, while teaching or preparing to teach at Pisa, actually appropriated much of his material from Jesuit lectures given at the Collegio Romano in 1598-90. The next articles then trace a number of key elements in Galileo's later work, mainly relating to logical methodology and natural philosophy, back to sources in medieval Aristotelian thought, notably in the writings of Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas. La mise en opposition conventionnelle entre l’aristotélisme scolastique et la science humaniste a été de plus en plus remise en question durant les dernières années. Tout au long de ces articles, William Wallace tente de démontrer que l’aristotélisme progressif a en fait pourvu le fondement des découvertes scientifiques de Galilée. The book discusses three main themes: the importance of continuities (including concepts of Welsh history, identity and language); religious attitudes and identities; and political culture. As Ward Clavier shows, the culture of Wales in this period was not frozen but rather dynamic, one that was constantly deploying traditional cultural symbols and practices to sustain a distinctive religious and political identity against a tide of change. The book uses a wide range of primary research material: from correspondence, diaries and financial accounts, to architectural, literary and material sources, drawing on both English and Welsh language texts.
