Book Making the Impossible Possible

Download or read book Making the Impossible Possible written by Yohei Sasakawa and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Left untreated, it can cause progressive and permanent disability. But a diagnosis of leprosy can have consequences that go far beyond the disease's physical manifestations. The age-old stigma associated with leprosy can result in severe social discrimination that robs people of opportunities in life and condemns them to society's margins. This book is the most detailed account yet of Yohei Sasakawa's quest, over two decades as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, to work for a world without leprosy and the discrimination it causes. It chronicles his travels to remote communities around the world to hear directly from those affected by the disease, as well as his meetings with policy-makers, government leaders and heads of state to advocate for renewed commitment to the fight against leprosy, including measures to protect the human rights of those it affects. While much progress has been made, completing 'the last mile' in leprosy eradication is the hardest part of the journey. Making the Impossible Possible highlights the author's unflagging resolve to ensure that all involved stay the course.

Book excerpt: I thought he had spared me and let me go. I assumed he had left. I shut my eyes as I let myself sink into my chair. But then, I felt a gush of chilled shock on me. He splashed a glass of icy chilled water on my face and slapped me until I opened my eyes. Giving me a minute of rest, he then tore open a packet of my drug, powdered sugar, on my face. “This is what you need to stay awake, huh?” he said as he forcefully opened my mouth and sprinkled it in. I didn’t want to consume it. Passing out craving for it was better than giving in for it and staying up to bear torture. The powder went into my nose and entered my mouth. I choked. The sugar gave a kick to my body, but made me feel even dizzier. My body didn’t understand what was happening with it. My brain froze, and I was lost. He stepped back and pulled out another small cylindrical container. It looked like my sugar. He put his fingers inside and pulled out a pinch of that powder. I wondered what he was up to next. He started sprinkling it on the slits on my arm, on my wounds. It burnt like I was on fire. It was salt. I cried out for help, but there was no one who could help me. I moved vigorously but it was all in vain. The more I moved, the more he seasoned my scars with salt.

Book The Heart Is a Shifting Sea

Download or read book The Heart Is a Shifting Sea written by Elizabeth Flock and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Silver Nautilus Award for Journalism & Investigative Reporting "A book that truly is impossible to put down.”—Washington Post "This remarkable debut is so deeply reported, elegantly written, and profoundly transporting that it reads like a novel you can’t put down. It’s both a nuanced and intimate evocation of Indian culture, and a provocative and exciting meditation on marriage itself."—Katie Roiphe, author of The Violet Hour In the vein of Behind the Beautiful Forevers, an intimate, deeply reported and revelatory examination of love, marriage, and the state of modern India—as witnessed through the lives of three very different couples in today’s Mumbai. In twenty-first-century India, tradition is colliding with Western culture, a clash that touches the lives of everyday Indians from the wealthiest to the poorest. While ethnicity, class, and religion are influencing the nation’s development, so too are pop culture and technology—an uneasy fusion whose impact is most evident in the institution of marriage. The Heart Is a Shifting Sea introduces three couples whose relationships illuminate these sweeping cultural shifts in dramatic ways: Veer and Maya, a forward-thinking professional couple whose union is tested by Maya’s desire for independence; Shahzad and Sabeena, whose desperation for a child becomes entwined with the changing face of Islam; and Ashok and Parvati, whose arranged marriage, made possible by an online matchmaker, blossoms into true love. Though these three middle-class couples are at different stages in their lives and come from diverse religious backgrounds, their stories build on one another to present a layered, nuanced, and fascinating mosaic of the universal challenges, possibilities, and promise of matrimony in its present state. Elizabeth Flock has observed the evolving state of India from inside Mumbai, its largest metropolis. She spent close to a decade getting to know these couples—listening to their stories and living in their homes, where she was privy to countless moments of marital joy, inevitable frustration, dramatic upheaval, and whispered confessions and secrets. The result is a phenomenal feat of reportage that is both an enthralling portrait of a nation in the midst of transition and an unforgettable look at the universal mysteries of love and marriage that connect us all.

  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book India written by Aline Dobbie and published by Melrose Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her infancy the author has been fascinated by that most magnificent and elusive of beasts, the tiger. Her second book on India, [this] is a personal account of her pilgramage to India's great wildlife parks and tiger sanctuaries ... and provides a comprehensive study of Ranthambhore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Corbett Tiger Reserves as well as detailed backgrounds to Nagarahole, Kaziranga, Pench, Bharatpur and Gir National Park, home of the rare Asiatic Lion ... In addition, the author highlights the continuing threat to India's tigers and the on-going efforts to protect them ... Dobbie is a Hindi speaker and uses her many contacts and childhood reminiscences to great effect throughout this book. The reader will also find valuable information on some of India's historical gems such as Gwalior, Orchha, Sonagiri, Mandu, Sanchi and Bhimbetka as well as the hill station of Nainital. India: The Tiger's Roar is certainly not a travel guide, nor a guide to the wildlife of India, although it is an excellent source of information on both subjects. Instead it is a heady blend of travelogue and personal insight, cultural and political philosophy, anecdotes, cautionary tales, historical and religious references and a thesis on the state of Indian wildlife conservation.
