Book Two Models for Predicting the Probability of a Cloud Free Line of Sight

Download or read book Two Models for Predicting the Probability of a Cloud Free Line of Sight written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two modeling approaches are proposed to predict the probability of a cloud-free line-of-sight (PCFLOS) from space-borne sensor to a missile or other object. The models, which account for various cloud conditions and zenith angles, are suitable for military training and simulation purposes. One approach uses a set of detailed models to generate a cloud scene and randomly place m issiles within it. A simulated sensor then detects the missiles to which it has a CFLOS and the fraction detected is interpreted as the PCFLOS. The second approach is a simplified model that constructs two-dimensional scenes containing rectangular clouds. The fraction of area that remains visible between clouds from a collection of scenes is the PCFLOS. This calculation relies on cloud metrics that are evaluated in consideration of meteorological observations and then tuned to improve agreement with the detailed model. The detailed model approach is computationally expensive, but can be used to precompute a range of values, from which a required PCFLOS can be interpolated. The simplified model is computationally inexpensive and easy to implement, however it requires a set of detailed model results for tuning purposes.

Book Analysis of Cloud Free Line of Sight Probability Calculations

Download or read book Analysis of Cloud Free Line of Sight Probability Calculations written by Joseph J. Golemboski and published by . This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cloud-free line-of-sight probabilities were calculated using two separate methods. The first was a variation of a method developed by the Rand Corporation in 1972. In it, CFLOS probabilities were calculated using empirical data based on five years of photograms taken over Columbia, Missouri and forecasted cloud amounts rather than climatological values. The second was a new approach using the Cloud Scene Simulation Model developed by Phillips Laboratory. Cloud scenes were generated using forecasted cloud fields, meteorological inputs, and thirty random numbers. Water content files were produced and processed through a follow-on program to determine the extinction coefficients at each grid point in the working domain. A reiterative routine was written to integrate the extinction coefficients along a view angle from the top of the domain down to the surface at separate points within the horizontal domain. The values of each point were summed and averaged over the working domain to determine the CFLOS probability for the target area. The nadir look angle was then examined for both methods. Stratus, stratocumulus, cumulus, and altocumulus cloud types were independently examined with the CSSM generated cloud scenes. Each method and cloud type were compared against the known CFLOS probability for nadir. Results indicate the method developed in 1972 underestimates CFLOS probabilities by as much as twelve per cent with horizontal cloud coverage ranging from 30 to 80 per cent. CSSM generated cloud scenes varied depending on the cloud type analyzed, with stratocumulus clouds measuring up the best against the known probabilities.

Book Estimating Mean Cloud and Climatological Probability of Cloud free Line of sight

Download or read book Estimating Mean Cloud and Climatological Probability of Cloud free Line of sight written by John T. McCabe and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is described which provides an estimate of the probability of cloud-free line-of-sight between any two levels at any angle to the horizon for locations having standard surface-observed cloud data. The method uses the mean cloud amount between the surface and each higher kilometer level to estimate the mean cloud amount at any level, the mean cloud amount above any level and the mean cloud amount between any two levels. Analyses of sunshine and total cloud cover by time of day provide a basis for estimating probability of cloud-free line-of-sight through the whole atmosphere as a function of mean total cloud cover and viewing angle. This relationship is used to estimate the probability of cloud-free line-of-sight at any angle between any two levels for which the mean cloudiness between the levels is known or estimated. Height vs distance profiles of estimated probability of cloud-free line-of-sight can be prepared manually or by computer for any kilometer height reference levels. (Author).

Book Climatic Probabilities of the Vertical Distribution of Cloud Cover

Download or read book Climatic Probabilities of the Vertical Distribution of Cloud Cover written by Irving I. Gringorten and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The probability model of areal coverage of weather conditions that was published in the Journal of Applied Meteorology (1979) is applied to extend the usefulness of climatic records of station sky cover (tenths) and ceiling height (meters) to the estimation of cloud presence at any level in the atmosphere or within any layer. Specifically, estimates are made of: (a) the average cloud cover as a function of the vertical distance above the ground, (b) the average amount of cloud presence, in layers or at individual levels, and (c) the probability distribution of cloud cover, from clear to overcast, at any level or in any layer between two levels.

Download or read book Magnetic Fields in Diffuse Media written by Alexander Lazarian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the current knowledge of magnetic fields in diffuse astrophysical media. Starting with an overview of 21st century instrumentation to observe astrophysical magnetic fields, the chapters cover observational techniques, origin of magnetic fields, magnetic turbulence, basic processes in magnetized fluids, the role of magnetic fields for cosmic rays, in the interstellar medium and for star formation. Written by a group of leading experts the book represents an excellent overview of the field. Nonspecialists will find sufficient background to enter the field and be able to appreciate the state of the art.
