Book excerpt: In this intriguing, espionage thriller, a California detective works to solve the murder of a suspected war criminal who may also be connected to an art heist. In the fall of 1985, San Jose Police Detective Martin Gilmore is gravely wounded in a gun battle while protecting Frederick Lang, a university instructor recently accused of being a Nazi war criminal. During the encounter, Lang is brutally murdered, along with another police officer. During his recuperation, Gilmore discovers that the double homicide is linked to Lang's role in a clandestine art heist committed in war-torn Europe more than forty years earlier. Gilmore soon finds himself tracking down the killers, as well as the art collection. The intelligence community is watching every move he makes, as are members of the Tesia Foundation, an organization dedicated to the apprehension of war criminals. As events unfold, Gilmore's mysterious experiences in the Vietnam War return to haunt him, complicating his revenge-driven investigation even further. But Gilmore's macabre nightmares and other subtle clues could be enough to help him solve Lang's murder.

Download or read book The Protestant Bible Correctly Translated written by William Harwood and published by World Audience Inc. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been a need for a translation of the Judaeo-Christian Bible that did not deliberately mistranslate certain words and sentences for the purpose of concealing that the biblical authors' beliefs were quite different from those of modern Jews, Christians and Muslims. For example, "The LORD" is a falsification of the proper name Yahweh, a god like Zeus or Jupiter. But the most blatant fraud has been the rendering of the Hebrew word allahiym as the male proper name, "God." Allahiym is neither a proper name nor singular nor unisexual. Al means a god. The suffix -ah is a feminine singular inflection, so that allah means "goddess." The suffix -iym is a masculine plural inflection, making allahiym a dual-sex, generic plural, "male and female gods," or, in the common gender, "gods." This translation corrects such falsifications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘eco-fairy’ as a concept is not new. The sensibility has been present for several centuries. An examination of the folklore and literary sources discloses three interrelated functions that the faes were believed to undertake: they cared for small mammals and birds; they had a special link with certain flowers and trees and, lastly, they assumed a more general supervisory role over the natural world, keeping it in balance and preventing over-exploitation and pollution.

Download or read book Twilight of the Hemlocks and Beeches written by Tim Palmer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magnificently illustrated book, conservationist and celebrated outdoors photographer Tim Palmer launches us on a revealing journey among the hemlock and beech trees that have for millennia towered over America’s eastern woodlands. The eastern hemlock and North American beech once thrived from Maine to Georgia, casting shade on trout streams, nourishing wildlife large and small, and gracing uncounted valleys, mountainsides, parks, and backyards. These trees now face tragic decimation by exotic insects and pathogens. Palmer’s photos record the splendor of the cherished hemlock and beech in the same way that pictures of iconic, historic buildings commemorate classic landmarks gone the way of the wrecking ball. And yet, as Palmer underscores in his final chapter, the lessons learned as we address the fate of these trees can help us chart a better course for all wooded landscapes in the years ahead. This story of loss, scientific inquiry, and prospective recovery is vital to understanding nature in our time. As an act of artistic preservation, a report on the science vital to the survival of these trees, and a call to action, Twilight of the Hemlocks and Beeches assures a lasting legacy for this irreplaceable forest community. With more than one hundred exquisite full-color photographs, this book is a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts, natural historians, ecologists, and all lovers of nature.
