Book English Fairy Tales and More English Fairy Tales

Download or read book English Fairy Tales and More English Fairy Tales written by Donald Haase Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-06-19 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first compilation of the full first-edition texts of the classic fairy tale collections by Joseph Jacobs, with Jacobs' original prefaces and annotations. In these two classic collections, first published in 1890 and 1894, Joseph Jacobs combined folklore, children's literature, and the eclectic scholarship of the Victorian era to create a storehouse of tales that inhabited the imaginations of children and adults for generations. Here readers first met Tom Tit Tot, Molly Whuppie, and Jack the Giant-Killer, and first read the stories of the Three Little Pigs, the Three Bears, and Henny-Penny. Jacobs' daring collections challenged conventional thinking about the meaning of "folk," the individual artistry behind folktales, and the boundaries between folklore and literature, anticipating modern developments in folklore studies. His original editions of these 87 classic tales, along with the original illustrations, are reprinted in this new volume, offering readers an unsurpassed understanding of the development of the classic fairy tale in late Victorian England.

Then Penelope asked Sunbeam the Second - "Shall you always stay in my eyes?" "I hope so," said Sunbeam the Second; "but perhaps if you are unhappy I shall be obliged to go away." Then the corners of Penelope's mouth began to droop a little. "Dear Sunbeam," she said to Sunbeam the Third, "shall you be always in my heart?" "Yes, if you keep me there," said Sunbeam the Third. "How can I keep you there?" asked Penelope. "You must love the fairies," said the sunbeam, "and understand them when they speak to you. If you love the fairies even when you are old, I shall stay in your heart always." These stories have been written for Penelope, so that she may love the fairies, and keep the sunbeam always in her heart. Book The Fairy Tale Vanguard

Download or read book The Fairy Tale Vanguard written by Stijn Praet and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its early modern inception as a literary genre unto its own, the fairy tale has frequently provided authors with a textual space in which to reflect on the nature, status and function of their own writing and that of literature in general. At the same time, it has served as an ideal laboratory for exploring and experimenting with the boundaries of literary convention and propriety. While scholarship pertaining to these phenomena has focused primarily on the fairy-tale adaptations and deconstructions of postmodern(ist) writers, this essay collection adopts a more diachronic approach. It offers fairy-tale scholars and students a series of theoretical and literary-historical expositions, as well as case studies on English, French, German, Swedish, Danish, and Romanian texts from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, by authors as diverse as Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy, Rikki Ducornet, Hans Christian Andersen and Robert Coover.

Book Fireside Fairies Or Christmas at Aunt Elsie s Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fireside Fairies Or Christmas at Aunt Elsie s Classic Reprint written by Susan Pindar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fireside Fairies, or Christmas at Aunt Elsie's Home truths in strange dresses would, perhaps, be an appropriate title for this unobtrusive volume, which, it' is hoped will meet the approbation of the little people for Whom it is expressly designed. There exists, in the minds of some parents, a strong and reasonable prejudice against Fairy Tales for children; as the extravagant imagery and im probable incidents, in which they generally abound, often mislead or bewilder the youthful imagination. But it is hoped this little book may escape such censure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fairy Tales of London

Download or read book Fairy Tales of London written by Hadas Elber-Aviram and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2022 Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Myth and Fantasy Studies From the time of Charles Dickens, the imaginative power of the city of London has frequently inspired writers to their most creative flights of fantasy. Charting a new history of London fantasy writing from the Victorian era to the 21st century, Fairy Tales of London explores a powerful tradition of urban fantasy distinct from the rural tales of writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien. Hadas Elber-Aviram traces this urban tradition from Dickens, through the scientific romances of H.G. Wells, the anti-fantasies of George Orwell and Mervyn Peake to contemporary science fiction and fantasy writers such as Michael Moorcock, Neil Gaiman and China Miéville.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fairies Festival John Witt Randall, the author of this little poem, was born in Boston, November 6, 1813. His father was Dr. John Randall, a graduate of Harvard College in the class of 1802, and one of the most eminent physicians of his time in Boston; and his mother was Elizabeth (Wells) Randall, grand-daughter of Samuel Adams, the illustrious "Father of the Revolution." After receiving his preparatory education at Mr. Green's school in Jamaica Plain and at the Boston Latin School, he entered Harvard College in 1830, and was graduated in the class of 1834. Subsequently he took the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, but never practised his profession. At first, Dr. Randall's tastes were largely in the direction of natural history, especially entomology. His early proficiency in this field was so marked and so widely recognized that he received the appointment of "professor of zoology in the department of invertebrate animals" in the South Sea Exploring Expedition, generally known as "Wilkes's Expedition," which sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, on August 18, 1838.
