They are printed for private distribution, and it is proper to say that Mr. Trescot has had no agency in their appearance in this form, though a hope is indulged that he will not object to it; the less, as his own excellent production to which they refer in general terms, is in print.] About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Two Letters to the Reverend Moses Stuart

Download or read book Two Letters to the Reverend Moses Stuart written by Bernard Whitman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Letters to the Reverend Moses Stuart: On the Subject of Religious Liberty Reverend Sir, In your Letter on Religious Liberty, you accuse Dr. Channing of publishing certain charges against orthodox Christians. You quote several passages from his writings to substantiate your accusation. You then bring together the substance of his charges in the following sentences. "You have charged the orthodox with a settled, steadfast, unrelenting purpose to suppress all free inquiry respecting matters of religion, to cover with reproach those who may differ from themselves, to drown the free expression of opinion by denunciations of heresy, and to strike terror into the multitude by joint and perpetual menace. In addition to all this, you represent them as saying; - Since argument is insufficient to produce uniformity of opinion, recourse must be had to more powerful instruments of conviction, to Ecclesiastical Courts." Having given this summary, you utter the following positive and solemn declarations. "I do know that the accusations which you stand pledged to support are not true. I aver that they are not, before heaven and earth." Now, my dear Sir, permit me also to express my honest convictions on this question. For I presume you will admit, that I have an equal right with yourself, to publish Letters on Religious Liberty; and an equal right, with any orthodox Christian, to utter solemn asseverations. I therefore aver, before heaven and earth, that I firmly believe the above charges to be substantially correct, when applied to the leaders of the orthodox denomination in our country, against whom they were specially directed. And to give you and the public the honest reasons for this belief, is the design and object of the present publication. I address you as the head of the orthodox party, because you seem to me to have assumed that character in your Letter to Dr. Channing. These are your own words. "All, against whom I suppose the denunciations in your works are specially directed, I have the pleasure of being more or less acquainted with; and I know well their feelings and views." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Letters of John Bright I think it necessary to state, in justice to Mr. Bright, that he is in no degree responsible for the publication of this volume. He has, it is true, given his consent to it, but so far from his having originated the work in any way, the collection was made and completed before any communication on the subject was made 'to him. Appreciation of the style and contents of the letters, and regard for the character and services of Mr. Bright, have led to the production of the book, and' it is given to the world in the belief that it will prove an acceptable addition to the literature of the country; comprising, as it does, the written declarations of one Who is confessedly a master of the English language, and containing ideas which have helped to mould the political thought of a nation. Download or read book Reports and Public Letters of John C Calhoun Classic Reprint written by Richard K. Crallé and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports and Public Letters of John C. Calhoun In the present volume the Editor has endeavored to bring together, without special reference to subject or dates, such Papers as may, in the main, be ranked under the head of Political Essays. Some of these have never before been published; while others appear in a different, if not a more perfect state. They were, for the most part, written at the instance, and for the use of his friends, who, in preparing them for the Press, were allowed and exercised some liberty of private judgment, as well as freedom of criticism. These privileges were, no doubt, cautiously and discreetly used; but in this collection of his Works, the Editor has felt himself constrained to adhere strictly to the original manuscripts of the author, in all cases where they could be procured. He regrets, however, to state that he has not been always successful in his efforts to obtain the originals. Many, it is to be feared, are now irretrievably lost; and amongst them that of the Address to his political friends and supporters, - which is the more to be regretted as the Editor has reason to believe it contained some important matter which does not appear in the printed Copy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the reading and writing habits of citizens leading up to the French Revolution, The Writing Public is a compelling addition to the long-running debate about the link between the Enlightenment and the political struggle that followed. Elizabeth Andrews Bond scoured France's local newspapers spanning the two decades prior to the Revolution as well as its first three years, shining a light on the letters to the editor. A form of early social media, these letters constituted a lively and ongoing conversation among readers. Bond takes us beyond the glamorous salons of the intelligentsia into the everyday worlds of the craftsmen, clergy, farmers, and women who composed these letters. As a result, we get a fascinating glimpse into who participated in public discourse, what they most wanted to discuss, and how they shaped a climate of opinion. The Writing Public offers a novel examination of how French citizens used the information press to form norms of civic discourse and shape the experience of revolution. The result is a nuanced analysis of knowledge production during the Enlightenment. Thanks to generous funding from The Ohio State University Libraries and its participation in TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem), the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes, available on the Cornell University Press website and other Open Access repositories.

I scarcely saw. Or is it because I did see something in that flashing moment - something of your soul? Probably No, but since I write, possibly Yes. How enigmatic you are - enigmatic as only simplicity can be. And your charm - that is more easily described - that trick of the lifted lids - all childhood and frankness - that low, clear voice rippled as a woodland pool is rippled by the first warning of a nearing storm. Aged in a way most to the good of the public, the interests of the Crown, and the credit of the Government, the office should be perfectly sepa rated from politics, and that its head, instead of being required to have a seat in the Assembly, should, by virtue of his office, be excluded from having such seat; and in my opinion, for similarreasons, it would be better that he should not even have a seat at the Council Board.
