His etchings place him amongst the world's most highly regarded exponents of the medium and his pen drawings are masterpieces of draughtsmanship and control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currawongs appearing at the Manor in vast numbers had come to portend one thing... Death was on its way. When photographer Elizabeth Thorrington is invited to document the history of Currawong Manor for a book, she is keen to investigate a mystery from years before: the disappearance of her grandfather, the notorious artist Rupert Partridge, and the deaths of his wife, Doris, and daughter, Shalimar. For years, locals have speculated whether it was terrible tragedy or a double murder, but until now, the shocking truth of what happened at the Manor that day has remained a secret. Relocating to the manor, Elizabeth interviews Ginger Flower, one of Rupert's life models from the seventies, and Dolly Shaw, the daughter of the enigmatic 'dollmaker' who seems to have been protected over the years by the Partridge family. Elizabeth is sure the two women know what happened all those years ago, but neither will share their truths unconditionally. And in the surrounding Owlbone Woods, a haunting presence still lurks, waiting for the currawongs to gather... An evocative tale set in the spectacular Blue Mountains, Currawong Manor is a mystery of art, truth and the ripple effects of death and deception.

Download or read book Two Ohmans written by Janet Lindsay and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stina Ohman was the only member of her family to emigrate to the U.S. from Sweden. The year was 1920, and there was no choice in the matter; her father purchased her ticket. "Dearest Little Stina," is her life-story from the perspective of letters that were sent to my grandmother, Kristina Evelyn Ohman, from family and friends in Sweden. I found the Swedish letters in 1984. Thirty-five years later they were translated, and Stina's life-story took form. The second Ohman is Stina's son and only child, my father, Leonard Gordon Ohman. Lennart (Swedish spelling) had a difficult childhood. He lacked a sense of belonging and stability early in life. The section "Dear Mother:" is the collection of letters my father wrote to his mother from 1935-1940 while a student at Pillsbury Military Academy in Owatonna, Minnesota. Overcoming conflict is a major thread in Two Ohmans, as well as cause and effect. The two anthologies of letters are independent of each other and form the bones of the book. My reflections add dimension. It is a fascinating story of twists and surprises intertwined by love and lost love. All is authentic.

This book was released on 2000-08-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces in a lively and succinct way the major writers, literary movements, styles and genres that, at the beginning of a new century, are seen as constituting the field of 'Australian literature'. The book consciously takes a perspective that sees literary works not as aesthetic objects created in isolation by unique individuals, but as cultural products influenced and constrained by the social, political and economic circumstances of their times, as well as by geographical and environmental factors. It covers indigenous texts, colonial writing and reading, poetry, fiction and theatre throughout two centuries, biography and autobiography, and literary criticism in Australia. Other features of the companion are a chronology listing significant historical and literary events, and suggestions for further reading.

Book D H Lawrence s Australia

Download or read book D H Lawrence s Australia written by Dr David Game and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length account of D.H. Lawrence’s rich engagement with a country he found both fascinating and frustrating, D.H. Lawrence’s Australia focuses on the philosophical, anthropological and literary influences that informed the utopian and regenerative visions that characterise so much of Lawrence’s work. David Game gives particular attention to the four novels and one novella published between 1920 and 1925, what Game calls Lawrence’s 'Australian period,' shedding new light on Lawrence’s attitudes towards Australia in general and, more specifically, towards Australian Aborigines, women and colonialism. He revisits key aspects of Lawrence’s development as a novelist and thinker, including the influence of Darwin and Lawrence’s rejection of eugenics, Christianity, psychoanalysis and science. While Game concentrates on the Australian novels such as Kangaroo and The Boy in the Bush, he also uncovers the Australian elements in a range of other works, including Lawrence’s last novel, Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Lawrence lived in Australia for just three months, but as Game shows, it played a significant role in his quest for a way of life that would enable regeneration of the individual in the face of what Lawrence saw as the moral collapse of modern industrial civilisation after the outbreak of World War I.
