Book Two Laser Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Laser Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry of Biomolecules

Download or read book Two Laser Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Laser Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry of Biomolecules written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent efforts to detect and identify large biomolecules using matrix assisted laser desorption have shown MALDI to be an extremely sensitive technique for trace detection from a solid sample. In the DI process, ions are formed by proton transfer from an electronically excited organic acid to a suitable proton accepting analyte. However, detection and characterization of biomolecules may benefit from ionization of the isolated unprotonated gas phase neutrals. To this end, a custom time-of-flight mass spectrometer as been constructed to perform two-laser matrix assisted laser desorption/laser ionization studies using separate desorption and ionization lasers. The two chamber, differentially pumped apparatus incorporates numerous laser and sample probe entry ports, a pulsed valve, and a modified Wiley-NcLaren mass spectrometer design. Results of initial two-laser experiments on phenylalanine in a sinnapinic acid matrix have demonstrated the apparatus' ability to detect laser ionization of laser desorbed neutrals.

Book 100 Years of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

Download or read book 100 Years of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin written by Laurence A. Cole and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 years of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin: Reviews and New Perspectives is a collection of articles written by some of the world’s leading experts on the pregnancy hormone and cancer marker hCG. In 2019 it is difficult to ignore the effect that our understanding of hCG has had on the lives of millions of people worldwide. The hCG immunoassay, in one form or another, is now one of the most common medical tests conducted and is often the first indication that a mother-to-be is pregnant. Not only a marker of pregnancy, hCG is utilized in the diagnosis and monitoring in oncology and presents a potential target for novel cancer therapeutics. 100 years ago, in 1919, Hirose was demonstrating gonadotropic functions which resulted from a chorionic factor. Over the last century this factor has become defined as hCG and more recently explored as not one molecule but a group of molecules with variable structure and variable functions in both pregnancy and cancer. hCG is a multi-faceted molecule that has clinical and therapeutic implications but can be a challenging topic for researchers and physicians alike. This text covers the different structures and functions of hCG exploring the genes and evolution of the molecule, the different protein and glycosylation structures which can exist and their effect on structure, detection and quantification. 100 Years of hCG is not an attempt to recount the history of every publication on hCG, but rather a collection of reviews and new perspectives by "hCG-ologists", the term used by Hussa to describe biochemists working on HCG in the first book written on the topic over 30 years ago. Some of the authors have been around a while, some not so long, but others are just beginning their journey with a most beguiling molecule. Provides updated information on a complex and changing subject in five sections Reviews historical perspectives and developments over the last 100 years Includes novel insights into the structure, function and detection of hCG in pregnancy and cancer Includes chapters on the use of mass spectrometry to detect and quantify hCG as well as traditional immunoassays and over the counter pregnancy tests Describes the role of hCG in pregnancy, endometrial receptivity and embryo implantation and the use in fertility treatment Addresses the specific hyperglycosylated hCG test that can distinguish a normal term from a failing pregnancy and also screen for preeclampsia and gestational hypertension in pregnancy as well as its use as a marker and treatment target in cancer. Includes chapters on the development and use of hCG vaccines Includes a section on hCG and in subunits in cancer

Book Carbon Nanowalls

Download or read book Carbon Nanowalls written by Mineo Hiramatsu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing the first text to cover this exciting new area of research, this book will describe synthesis techniques of CNWs, their characterization and various expected applications using CNWs. Carbon-nanowalls (CNWs) can be described as two-dimensional graphite nanostructures with edges comprised of stacks of plane graphene sheets standing almost vertically on the substrate. These sheets form a wall structure with a high aspect ratio. The thickness of CNWs ranges from a few nm to a few tens of nm. The large surface area and sharp edges of CNWs may prove useful for a number of applications such as electrochemical devices, field electron emitters, storage materials for hydrogen gas, catalyst support. In particular, vertically standing CNWs with a high surface-to-volume ratio, serve as an ideal material for catalyst support for fuel cells and in gas storage materials.
