Book The Lectins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Irvin Liener
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0323144446
  • Pages : 619 pages

Download or read book The Lectins written by Irvin Liener and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lectins: Properties, Functions, and Applications in Biology and Medicine is a 10-chapter text that deals with the advances in research studies on the properties, functions, and applications of lectins in biology and medicine. The first two chapters consider the historical development, physicochemical properties, isolation, and remarkable specificity toward sugars of lectins. These topics are followed by a discussion on the molecular aspects of protein evolution, with a particular emphasis on lectins, which provide an excellent example of a family of homologous proteins. The following chapters explore the diverse biological activities of lectins and how these properties are utilized for the isolation and characterization of carbohydrate-containing compounds in solution and on cells. A chapter focuses on the functions of lectins in their natural milieu. This text further covers the importance of lectins in nonplant systems as exemplified by lectins that occur in vertebrates, slime molds, and bacteria. The last chapter highlights the nutritional significance of the occurrence of lectins in plant foods such as legumes. This book is an ideal source for organic chemists, protein researchers, and workers in the fields of biology and medicine.

Book Advances in Lectin Research 3

Download or read book Advances in Lectin Research 3 written by Hartmut Franz and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-08-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new series "Advances in Lectin Research" reflects the rapid development of lectin research. Main topics are lectins as tools in biochemistry, histochemistry, immunology and biotechnology, and their role in cell recognition, cell isolation and in target cell killing. Furthermore, the participation of lectins in pathogenic mechanisms is discussed. "Advances in Lectin Research" will publish comprehensive reviews written by leading experts in the field. Supported by an international editorial board, the series editor will ensure that these reviews will be of interest not only to the "true lectinologist," but also to any scientist or technician in biology and medicine using lectins in his research.

Book The Biology of Glycoproteins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Raymond Ivatt
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 1468474642
  • Pages : 458 pages

Download or read book The Biology of Glycoproteins written by Raymond Ivatt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in many ways a sequel to The Biochemistry ojGlycoproteins and Proteoglycans. The enormous recent progress in understanding the biological roles of glycoproteins has prompted the present volume. The reasons for studying glycoproteins have multiplied, and in the present volume the roles played by glycoproteins are explored in a variety of biological situations. The first two chapters describe molecules involved in cell-substratum and cell-cell interactions in a broad sense, and also focus on recent progress in identifying specific attachment molecules. Our understanding of how normal processes, such as cellular differentiation and tissue organization, are regulated is dependent on understanding how cells interact with the extracellular matrix. When these processes go awry the consequences can be tragic, for example, when manifest as birth de fects and cancer. Our ability to devise appropriate therapies is in many cases limited by our understanding of such cell-matrix interactions. The third chapter explores the roles by glycoproteins during early mammalian development. The carbohydrate portions c1early play very important roles in presenting information during early embryogenesis, and an unusual tumor stern cell, the embryonal carcinoma, looks very promising in pro viding an experimental system for understanding how the expression of these complex carbohydrate determinants is regulated. The next three chapters explore the biology of glycoproteins in distinct situations: in the immune system, in the nervous system, and during erythropoiesis.
