Book excerpt: Two of the leaves (23 x 16 cm.) contain text from Livy's Ab urbe condita, copied in Italy during the mid-15th century in a humanistic script. The first leaf contains a large gilt initial "I" interlaced with white-vine tendrils which extend around the text on all four sides to form a border, on a blue, pink, green, and gold background. In the center of the lower border, the illuminator has left a blank space in the shape of a shield for a coat of arms. The second leaf is adorned with a large initial "C" in gold on a rose, blue, green, and white background. The third leaf (19 x 14 cm.), is a fine soft vellum leaf from a French book of hours, copied during the late 15th century, and probably sold at one of the famous shrines to which wealthy laymen made pilgrimages. Text in a gothic hand is surrounded by an illuminated border of gold, rose, blue, and white, from which sprout vines and leaves in matching colors. There are also large and small illuminated capitals in burnished gold on a blue and rose background, and rose, blue, gold, and white line fillers.
