Book Two Hundred Eleven 20Th Century Comedian Actors

Download or read book Two Hundred Eleven 20Th Century Comedian Actors written by Larry Goldbeck M.D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedy is centuries old. In Medieval Times monarchs were entertained by court jesters. Melodramas provided boredom and stress relief for the pioneers of America’s West. The Nineteenth Century brought vaudeville and burlesque and entertainment jobs for many early comedians. Many of these passed on to their children their comedic skills. These 20th Century comedians are the subject of this book. They moved from burlesque and vaudeville to radio, Broadway, films, and some into television. Some remained “full-time” comedians and some chose serious acting roles at times.

Book I Drink for a Reason

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Cross
  • Publisher : Grand Central Publishing
  • Release : 2009-08-31
  • ISBN : 0446550884
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book I Drink for a Reason written by David Cross and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The star and creative force behind Mr. Show and Arrested Development pens his "first and final book, chronicling his meteoric rise and abysmal fall in the literary world." After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show With Bob And David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Whether deflating the pomposity of religious figures, calling out the pathetic symbiosis of pseudo-celebrity and its leaching fandom, or merely pushing the buttons of the way-too-easily offended P.C. left or the caustic, double-standard of the callous (but funnier) right, Cross has something to say about everyone, including his own ridiculous self. Now, for the first time, Cross is weaving his media mockery, celebrity denunciation, religious commentary and sheer madness into book form, revealing the true story behind his almost existential distaste of Jim Belushi ("The Belush"), disclosing the up-to-now unpublished minutes to a meeting of Fox television network executives, and offering up a brutally grotesque run-in with Bill O'Reilly. And as if this wasn't enough for your laughing pleasure in these troubled times, some of the pieces splinter off with additional material being created online in exclusive video and animated web content created solely for the book-a historical first (presumably)! With a mix of personal essays, satirical fiction posing as truth, advice for rich people, information from America's least favorite Rabbi and a top-ten list of top-ten lists, I Drink for a Reason is as unique as the comedian himself, and cannot be missed.

Book excerpt: For more than a century, directors from both sides of the border have chosen Mexico as the location to create their cinematic art, leaving an indelible imprint on the imaginations of moviegoers and filmmakers worldwide. Now, for the first time, Made in Mexico: Hollywood South of the Border presents a comprehensive examination of more than one hundred Hollywood theatrical feature films made in Mexico between 1914 and the present day. Lavishly illustrated throughout, Made in Mexico examines how Hollywood films depicted Mexico and how Mexico represented itself in relation to the films shot on location. It pulls back the curtain on how Hollywood filmmakers influenced Mexican films and Mexican filmmakers influenced Hollywood. Listed chronologically and featuring cast, credits, synopsis, and contemporary reviews along with a production history for each entry, this book highlights the concept of “crossing borders ” in which artists from both nations collaborated with one another. Made in Mexico also provides a brief historical perspective on the aesthetics, economics, and politics of the film industries in each country, giving readers a glimpse of the external forces at play in the production of these films. With motion pictures permeating the cultural and historical landscape of both Mexico and the United States, this compulsively readable compendium demonstrates the far-reaching influences of the featured films on the popular culture of both nations.

Book Orientalism and Representations of Music in the Nineteenth Century British Popular Arts

Download or read book Orientalism and Representations of Music in the Nineteenth Century British Popular Arts written by Claire Mabilat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of music were employed to create a wider 'Orient' on the pages, stages and walls of nineteenth-century Britain. This book explores issues of orientalism, otherness, gender and sexuality that arise in artistic British representations of non-European musicians during this time, by utilizing recent theories of orientalism, and the subsidiary (particularly aesthetic and literary) theories both on which these theories were based and on which they have been influential. The author uses this theoretical framework of orientalism as a form of othering in order to analyse primary source materials, and in conjunction with musicological, literary and art theories, thus explores ways in which ideas of the Other were transformed over time and between different genres and artists. Part I, The Musical Stage, discusses elements of the libretti of popular musical stage works in this period, and the occasionally contradictory ways in which 'racial' Others was represented through text and music; a particular focus is the depiction of 'Oriental' women and ideas of sexuality. Through examination of this collection of libretti, the ways in which the writers of these works filter and romanticize the changing intellectual ideas of this era are explored. Part II, Works of Fiction, is a close study of the works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard, using other examples of popular fiction by his contemporary writers as contextualizing material, with the primary concern being to investigate how music is utilized in popular fiction to represent Other non-Europeans and in the creation of orientalized gender constructions. Part III, Visual Culture, is an analysis of images of music and the 'Orient' in examples of British 'high art', illustration and photography, investigating how the musical Other was visualized.
