The propaganda pamphlets help historians place a finger on the pulse of an extraordinarily important historical period when new ideas concerning the nation-state, the rights of the governed and forms of political protest complicated the political scene and opened up new fronts of conflict between the colonial state and the colonized subjects. This study devises innovative approaches to reading these pamphlets and generates new insights into the world of the pamphleteers thus providing the readers with a more nuanced understanding of the politics and political culture of early twentieth-century Bengal. In the process, the book makes an important contribution to the historical controversies that the politics of this period has generated among scholars of Indian nationalism.

In search of common historical roots, traditions and visions of political-cultural integration, first Japanese, then Chinese, Korean and Indian intellectuals, politicians and writers understood Asianisms as an umbrella for all conceptions, imaginations and processes which emphasized commonalities or common interests among different Asian regions and nations. This book investigates the multifarious discursive and material constructions of Asia within the region and in the West. It reconstructs regional constellations, intersections and relations in their national, transnational and global contexts. Moving far beyond the more well-known Japanese Pan-Asianism of the first half of the twentieth century, the chapters investigate visions of Asia that have sought to provide common meanings and political projects in efforts to trace, and construct, Asia as a united and common space of interaction. Book excerpt: This book examines and establishes connections between Italian Fascism and Hindu nationalism, connections which developed within the frame of Italy’s anti-British foreign policy. The most remarkable contacts with the Indian political milieu were established via Bengali nationalist circles. Diplomats and intellectuals played an important role in establishing and cultivating those tie-ups. Tagore’s visit to Italy in 1925 and the much more relevant liaison between Subhas Chandra Bose and the INA were results of the Italian propaganda and activities in India. But the most meaningful part of this book is constituted by the connections and influences it establishes between Fascism as an ideology and a political system and Marathi Hindu nationalism. While examining fascist political literature and Mussolini’s figure and role, Marathi nationalists were deeply impressed and influenced by the political ideology itself, the duce and fascist organisations. These impressions moulded the RSS, a right-wing, Hindu nationalist organisation, and Hindutva ideology, with repercussions on present Indian politics. This is the most original and revealing part of the book, entirely based on unpublished sources, and will prove foundational for scholars of modern Indian history.

The twin battles of Imphal and Kohima were so fierce that in 2013, a poll conducted in London recognized these as ‘Britain’s Greatest Battle.’ But, in the history of India’s independence movement, they have largely been eclipsed. While global historical accounts have framed them as a Japanese invasion of India, the truth is they were parts of India’s armed Liberation War against British colonial rule spearheaded by the Indian National Army under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, with the audacious ambition of uprooting the British Raj from the soil of India. British Prime Minister Churchill knew it well. However, fearing a cascading effect resulting in a nationwide uprising in support of Bose’s Liberation Army, Churchill orchestrated a smear campaign to misrepresent this attack as a mere Japanese invasion rather than acknowledging its true nationalist origins. Against this backdrop, the story eruditely recounts the gamut of India’s major revolutionary movements culminating in the full-fledged Liberation War, which was played down and belittled by the conspiracies of the Allied forces of World War II to conceal it from becoming known to the world. The book highlights how British propagandists actively embarked on a vicious slander campaign against Subhas Bose to undermine India’s quest for freedom, deliberately seeking to camouflage the daring legacy of Subhas Bose and all others. Yet, in the final analysis, the story narrates how Netaji’s Liberation War subsequently forced the British to free India.
