Book Masters of the Ninth Art

Download or read book Masters of the Ninth Art written by Matthew Screech and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In English-speaking countries, Francophone comic strips like Hergés's Les Aventures de Tin Tin and Goscinny and Uderzo's Les Aventures d'Asterix are viewed—and marketed—as children's literature. But in Belgium and France, their respective countries of origin, such strips—known as bandes dessinées—are considered a genuine art form, or, more specifically, "the ninth art." But what accounts for the drastic difference in the way such comics are received? In Masters of the Ninth Art, Matthew Screech explores that difference in the reception and reputation of bandes dessinées. Along with in-depth looks at Tin Tin and Asterix, Screech considers other major comics artists such as Jacque Tardi, Jean Giraud, and Moebius, assessing in the process their role in Francophone literary and artistic culture. Illustrated with images from the artists discussed, Masters of the Ninth Art will appeal to students of European popular culture, literature, and graphic art.

Book excerpt: A guidebook can show you where to go, a phrase-book what to say when you get there. Only Speak the Culture: France will lead you to the nation's soul. This easy-to-use cultural companion reflects what it means to have grown up with Camus, Cézanne, De Gaulle and Bardot; it captures the spirit of France and delves deep into the Gallic psyche. Through exploring the people, the movements and the lifestyles that have shaped the French experience, you will come to an intimate understanding of France and the French. There are many travel guides and manuals on living in France. Speak the Culture: France is different: a superbly designed, informed and entertaining insight into French life and culture and who the French really are. Recommended by the Institut français du Royaume-Uni, the Official French Government Centre of Language and Culture in the UK For new residents, business travellers, holidaymakers, students and lovers of France everywhere, Speak the Culture: France is an engaging companion and guide to an enviably rich civilization at the heart of Europe. Excerpt "It would be wrong to imagine that your average Frenchwoman just pops into Chanel on the Rue du Faubourg-St-Honoré whenever she needs a new bag, cardy or fragrance. While a significant minority do indulge in ready-to-wear lines produced by designer labels, most are happy with less brand-conscious garments. Small boutiques and historic department stores like Le Bon Marché and Les Galeries Lafayette sell the big brands, but many French are happy to buy anonymous clothes at knockdown prices in chain stores like Tati, or even in the hypermarket."

Book excerpt: In this well-illustrated book Professor Bernard Smith, who is often referred to as the father of art history in Australia, condenses the arguments presented in an earlier publication Modernisms History, 1998) into a very accessible and helpful text will prove useful for students and arts-interested readers. He begins by listing and carefully explaining those terms which frequently occur in arts literature dealing with the modern period and then goes on to show that modernism has become an historical period with its art forms both 'institutionalised' and 'globalised'. Now an historical entity, art historys basic tools can be employed to explain and describe it. They include an investigation of the periods 'style', use of 'form' and attitudes to meaning. In his defence of art historys traditions and methodologies he argues that the period that encompasses modernism in the arts might now be known as The Formalesque .

Book The Museums of Contemporary Art

Download or read book The Museums of Contemporary Art written by J. Pedro Lorente and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where, how, by whom and for what were the first museums of contemporary art created? These are the key questions addressed by J. Pedro Lorente in this new book. In it he explores the concept and history of museums of contemporary art, and the shifting ways in which they have been imagined and presented. Following an introduction that sets out the historiography and considering questions of terminology, the first part of the book then examines the paradigm of the Musée des Artistes Vivants in Paris and its equivalents in the rest of Europe during the nineteenth century. The second part takes the story forward from 1930 to the present, presenting New York's Museum of Modern Art as a new universal role model that found emulators or 'contramodels' in the rest of the Western world during the twentieth century. An epilogue, reviews recent museum developments in the last decades. Through its adoption of a long-term, worldwide perspective, the book not only provides a narrative of the development of museums of contemporary art, but also sets this into its international perspective. By assessing the extent to which the great museum-capitals - Paris, London and New York in particular - created their own models of museum provision, as well as acknowledging the influence of such models elsewhere, the book uncovers fascinating perspectives on the practice of museum provision, and reveals how present cultural planning initiatives have often been shaped by historical uses.
