Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three chapters investigating labor market trends, specifically of young workers (ages 18-24). In the United States, young workers decreased their labor market participation by more than 8\% from 1994-2014 and the first chapter of this research considers changing demographics and educational decisions to account for this decline. Using connected monthly Current Population Survey (CPS) data, an alternative definition of labor market attachment is considered, which accounts for attached, marginally attached, and not attached workers. Additionally, attending college is considered as a weak form of labor market participation. Accounting for demographic changes and varying levels of attachment by demographics, the decrease in the participation rate is decomposed into genuine and demographic changes. The finding is a genuine decrease of 1.5\% young workers out of the labor force over the twenty year period studied. A calculation of the impact of college major choice on participation is estimated by extending the decomposition, as well as estimating a logit model on participation by college major. For males certain majors (Agriculture and English and Foreign Language) correlate with lower labor force attachment, while others (Engineering, Mathematics, and Visual and Performing Arts) correspond with higher attachment. For females, graduate degrees are the strongest indicator of attachment to the labor force and being married correlates with non-attachment to the labor force. The second chapter of this research investigates the movement of young workers between labor market statuses. Rather than consider the stocks and percentages of workers in each state (i.e. charting the unemployment or participation rate), this paper analyzes the flows between statuses. A contribution of this research is to consider how labor market flows are impacted by education decisions by including schooling as a labor market status. Additionally, this chapter estimates the impact that labor market movements by young workers have on fluctuations of their unemployment rate; flows between unemployment and not-in-the-labor-force, account for over forty percent of the variation in unemployment for young workers. As young workers decide whether to participate in the labor force or continue their education, they must decide whether to forgo ``on-the-job" training and experience or attend college to acquire human capital through formal education. Following the work of John Robst (2007), the third chapter of this research considers three questions: To what extent do college graduates work in fields unrelated to their most recent degree field? Which degree fields lead to greater mismatch? What is the relationship between working outside a degree field and wages? This research first provides updated answers to these questions using data from the 2013 National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG). Additionally, this work includes new specifications of the wage penalty using parental education level, which was unavailable in Robst's data. The result indicates a wage correlation of complete mismatch between job and college major that is more than three times that of a partial mismatch. An important contribution of this paper is to address changes over time by comparing results from the NSCG data in 1993, 2003, 2010, and 2013. A significant result is that the negative association between mismatch and wages has increased by a factor of three for men and over four times for women from 1993 to 2013. The conclusions in this research describe both structural and cyclical trends in the young worker labor market. Despite the significant proportion of young workers in the labor force, little research has been conducted using data from individuals under the age of twenty-five. This dissertation focuses on young workers because of the importance they play in the labor market, but also to motivate future research. The decisions young people make impact the labor market as well as drive individual future labor market outcomes; policy should be informed by the structural and cyclical trends presented throughout this research.

Book excerpt: Chapter 1: I develop and estimate a dynamic household choice model that incorporates a broad set of determinants of children's labor supply and school attendance, to perform ex-ante evaluations of alternative versions of the urban implementation of the Mexican conditional cash transfer program Oportunidades. Previous research suggests that re-calibrating the targeting and parameters of the educational component of the program could potentially improve its effectiveness with respect to two key objectives: (i) increasing average schooling levels and (ii) eliminating the educational gender gap. The estimation of this behavioral model complements previous ex-post evaluations by providing a forecasting tool that can replicate how the households solve the optimization problem as the program's structure changes. I focus on evaluating cost-equivalent policy schemes that improve the program's efficacy in the first dimension. I find that, by eliminating grants at primary and lower secondary levels (where attendance is close to universal) and proportionally expanding transfers at upper secondary, attendance rates could increase by 14.8% for youth 15-17. Chapter 2: From an economic policy perspective it is crucial to understand what rationale drives individuals to prefer to be employed in the informal sector rather than the formal one, but more importantly if informality is really a choice. As a first approach to disentangle this matter, I evaluate empirically the occupational choice model introduced by Roy (1951) to evaluate if self-selection is an important factor explaining the observed wage distribution in the informal sector. I argue that, under certain conditions, differences on the degree of enforcement of labor market regulation across municipalities can be exploited as a source of variation to identify more adequately the parameters. Given the huge heterogeneity within the informal sector, the model is estimated for two sub-samples: (i) salaried workers and (ii) self-employed workers. I find evidence of positive self-sorting into the informal sector: workers endowed with higher task proficiency for informal sector activities are self-selecting into this sector.

Book excerpt: The first chapter examines the role of individuals' culture of origin in explaining the gender gap in youth's decision to delay moving out from the parental household. I show that in societies with traditional values about gender roles, young have more incentives than young women to live longer with their parents. When women from these cultures live in a more liberal society regarding gender roles, they move out faster from the parental household and also seek to find a husband from a different culture than their own. In the 2nd chapter, we show, based on a correspondence study that low-skilled youth are less likely to be called back by private sector employers when they are North-African rather than French. By contrast, the origin of the fictitious applicants does not impact their callback rate in the public sector, despite the similar negative discriminatory beliefs of recruiters in both sectors. Our model shows that the absence of discrimination at the invitation for an interview stage in the public sector is compatible, in this context, with stronger discrimination in hiring. The third chapter is also based on a correspondence study and investigates the effects of the labor market experience of high school dropouts four years after leaving school. Compared to those who have stayed unemployed since leaving school, the callback rate is not raised for those with employment experience, whether it is subsidized or non-subsidized, in the market or non-market sector, if there is no training accompanied by skill certification. Moreover, training accompanied by skill certification improves callback rates only when the local unemployment rate is low.

By analyzing the implications of three variants of collective bargaining – efficient bargaining in a uniform and a segmented labor market and “right-to-manage” wage bargaining – it identifies the quantity of money, price expectations, union power, and union size as the determinants of temporary equilibria. In the three scenarios, it characterizes and compares the temporary equilibria using both analytical and numerical techniques, with an emphasis on allocations, welfare, and efficiency. It also discusses the dynamic evolution under rational expectations and its steady states in nominal and real terms. Lastly, it demonstrates conditions for stability regarding a balanced monetary expansion of the economy.
