Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimating Economic Values for Nature presents, in one volume, a collection of V. Kerry Smith's papers prepared over 25 years dealing with the theory and practice of non-market valuation for environmental resources. Taken together, the papers explore the conceptual basis, the implementation process and empirical performance of all available methods of measuring economic values for the services of nature and how these values are constructed from people's choices. The issues discussed in this volume include travel cost recreation demand, averting behaviour, household production, hedonic property value, hedonic wage and contingent valuation methods. These essays describe what has been learned from past benefit analysis, using meta-analysis, as well as the issues at the frontier of current research in the area. This important volume will be welcomed by environmental and public economists, as well as practitioners of cost-benefit analysis, as an authoritative and comprehensive discussion of non-market valuation.

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-market environmental valuation (NMEV) is undergoing a period of increased growth in both application and development as a result of increasing recognition of the role of economics in environmental policy issues. Against this backdrop, The International Handbook on Non-Market Environmental Valuation brings together world leaders in the field to advance the development and application of NMEV as a tool for policymaking. The expert contributors provide insights into the state of the art across the spectrum of both revealed and stated preference methods and highlight new directions being taken. A sequence of topical applications demonstrate various techniques and illustrate what can be achieved using NMEV: deliberately diverse case studies are drawn from Europe, North America, Asia and Australia with valuation targets ranging across use and non-use values of the environment. A number of reviews of cutting-edge issues are also presented. This outstanding resource will enable those interested in environmental valuation from theoretical, practical or policy perspectives to bring themselves to the forefront of developments and practice. As such, this Handbook will prove invaluable to a wide-ranging audience encompassing academics, researchers, students, practitioners and consultants involved in environmental economics and NMEV.
Download or read book Value and Crisis written by Makoto Itoh and published by Monthly Review Press. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzes Japanese contributions to Marxist theory Marxist economic thought has had a long and distinguished history in Japan, dating back to the First World War. When interest in Marxist theory was virtually nonexistent in the United States, rival schools of thought in Japan emerged, and brilliant debates took place on Marx’s Capital and on capitalism as it was developing in Japan. Forty years ago, Makoto Itoh’s Value and Crisis began to chronicle these Japanese contributions to Marxist theory, discussing in particular views on Marx’s theories of value and crisis, and problems of Marx’s theory of market value. Now, in a second edition of his book, Itoh deepens his study Marx’s theories of value and crisis, as an essential reference point from which to analyze the multiple crises that have arisen during the past four decades of neoliberalism. One contribution of the original Value and Crisis was to bridge Japan and the world in the field of Marxian political economy. Itoh’s second edition demonstrates an even wider-ranging familiarity with major schools of Marxist thought, summarizing and assessing viewpoints of such theorists as Hilferding, Bauer, Kautsky, Bukharin, Luxemburg, Grossman, Sweezy, the Japanese Marxist Kozo Uno, together with the relevant parts of Capital and a section on the 1930’s Great Depression. Given today’s current emergencies of world capitalism and socialism, says Itoh, we need to work together to resolve new global problems, articulating new issues of Marx’s theories of value and crisis. The promise of Marx’s theories has not waned. If anything—given the failure of Soviet-style socialism and the catastrophe of neoliberalism—it grows daily.

Download or read book Explorations in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics written by R. Halvorsen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains an excellent set of papers by top scholars in environmental and resource economics. These papers span the wide range of topics that characterized the extraordinarily broad and productive career of Gardner Brown. They bring current issues in modeling important environmental policy questions into sharp focus in a way that emphasizes Brown s seminal insights. Richard Carson, University of California, San Diego, US I am glad this book has been written. Gardner is clearly too radical to get a statue and I doubt he would have the patience to sit long enough for the sculptor to finish. Yet Gardner s ideas really deserve remembrance. The editors have managed not only to cover many of the areas and methods Gardner worked with but also to find authors who loved and/or respected him and who have honoured him by providing high quality work in his spirit. The book is imbued with those curious blends of curiosity and rigour, daring abstraction and yet painstaking attention to detail that are so characteristic of Gardner s work. It was a great pleasure to read. Thomas Sterner, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Gardner M. Brown, Jr. has been a leading innovator in the development of environmental and natural resource economics. This book comprises essays written in his honor by some of the most distinguished economists working in this field. The principal themes addressed include fundamental theoretical and empirical issues in the valuation of environmental and natural resources; the relationships between economic growth, natural resources and environmental quality; re-evaluation of some standard results in the dynamic modeling of renewable and non-renewable resources; the protection and management of biological resources; and the economics of antibiotic resistance. The original papers within this book will be of great interest to academics and practitioners in the field of environmental and natural resource economics.

Download or read book Hard to Measure Goods and Services written by Ernst R. Berndt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated economist Zvi Griliches’s entire career can be viewed as an attempt to advance the cause of accuracy in economic measurement. His interest in the causes and consequences of technical progress led to his pathbreaking work on price hedonics, now the principal analytical technique available to account for changes in product quality. Hard-to-Measure Goods and Services, a collection of papers from an NBER conference held in Griliches’s honor, is a tribute to his many contributions to current economic thought. Here, leading scholars of economic measurement address issues in the areas of productivity, price hedonics, capital measurement, diffusion of new technologies, and output and price measurement in “hard-to-measure” sectors of the economy. Furthering Griliches’s vital work that changed the way economists think about the U.S. National Income and Product Accounts, this volume is essential for all those interested in the labor market, economic growth, production, and real output.
