Book excerpt: During my childhood, my family owned a small convenience store that served members of our community. However, our family business had to close because of customers who failed to pay. I find that small businesses tend to be more susceptible to unexpected internal and external forces than their larger counterparts. Small businesses constitute the economy's lifeblood, but they obviously need more help and support than large companies. I am thus interested in researching the funding-related and operational difficulties that small retailers and startups face and especially what I can do to help them survive these challenges.My first dissertation research focuses on how crowdfunding platforms can help protect economically struggling entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Crowdfunding is a new technology platform providing access to two parties: entrepreneurs and SMEs who launch campaigns to collect money and funders who visit the platform and decide whether to support the project. Despite only being around since 2009, crowdfunding has become a popular entrepreneurship financing option and is catching up to traditional financing channels like venture capital. I propose that such a fast-growing online technology platform offers a vital financing resource for financially constrained entrepreneurs during the pandemic. My empirical analysis results confirm my proposition that the number of funders, the size of their contributions, and their total investment amounts all increased with the increased severity of COVID-19, challenging the existing belief that a crisis has a negative effect on entrepreneurship financing. I further examine that one plausible reason for funders' increasing investment demand is altruism-- funders are more willing to support and help entrepreneurs to bring their projects to life when they are struggling financially due to COVID-19. This result is consistent with current findings about the altruistic nature of funders noted in the literature. However, on the supply side, entrepreneurs have reduced their project-launching activities despite more financing opportunities on the demand side. I therefore urge entrepreneurs to launch new ventures to tap into crowdfunding resources. My second dissertation paper focuses on consumers' response to a product failure: product returns. Many retailers treat product returns as an evil because returns hurt their bottom line. However, researchers have pointed out recently that a return serves as another customer touchpoint to enhance consumer relationships. A superior return experience can turn angry, frustrated customers into happy ones so that they increase their purchases in the future. While existing research focuses on the overall effect of returns on future consumer purchases, I question whether this effect applies to all returns. I classify consumer returns based on the reason for the return-the wrong size, not liking the item, disappointment with the quality, and other reasons. Then I examine how the reason for the return impacts future consumer purchases. My regression results suggest that only sizing returns increase the likelihood of consumer repurchases. In contrast, items returned because the consumer doesn't like the product decrease consumer repurchases and returns based on quality concerns do not significantly affect consumer repurchases. I explain my results based on the attribution theory: customers return reasons influence how they blame a seller and then how they respond. For example, sizing returns, at least partially, can be self-ascribed to consumers because consumers' body dimensions- height, chest size, waist size, and so on-vary significantly, and so designing a product to fit everyone can be challenging. Due to self- attribution, customers tend to have a lower initial dissatisfaction caused by a return event, which a redress process (id est, a good return experience) can easily recover. Our paper contributes to consumer return literature by addressing the rarity of return-reason-related research. We also provide important managerial insights to improve retailers' return service recovery practices and customer value evaluation using return reason data.

Book excerpt: In the recent years, crowdfunding (a phenomenon where individuals collectively contribute money to back different goals and projects through the internet) has been gaining a lot of attention especially for its socio-economic impact. This dissertation explores this phenomenon in three distinct but related essays. The first essay explores the nature and dynamics of backers contributions and uses the insights generated to develop a forecasting model that can predict crowdfunding campaign outcomes. The second essay investigates how creators crowdfunding campaign design decisions impact their funding and post-funding outcomes. Interestingly, the essay highlights that certain crowdfunding campaign design decisions have differential effects on both funding and post-funding phases and this has implications for creators, backers, and crowdfunding platform owners. Finally, the third essay investigates whether creators post-funding relations-building efforts with backers matter and how such relations-building efforts might impact the performance of their subsequent crowdfunding campaign. In general, this dissertation not only increases our understanding of the crowdfunding phenomenon across the funding and post-funding phases, it also provides insights and tools that can help stakeholders maximize the benefits accruable to them when they engage in crowdfunding.

My thesis is focused on modeling and studying the marketing strategies in two business models in the connected economy: online crowdfunding and the sharing economy. Online crowdfunding allows creators to raise money from a large number of people (the â crowdâ ) to make their projects happen. In Chapter 2, I examine the product and pricing decisions in crowdfunding. Two key ways of how crowdfunding scenario differs from traditional list-price setting are identified. With crowdfunding, the fundraiser is more likely to offer a line of products, and the quality gap between products becomes smaller. In Chapter 3, I study the effects of video advertising in online crowdfunding. While a video ad helps improve the success rate of a crowdfunding project, I show that merely having a video is not enough. The length, stimulation level, and content of a video ad all have significant effects on the funding outcomes of a project. Together, these results contribute to a further understanding about the rising crowdfunding industry. Sharing economy refers to the peer-to-peer based sharing of goods and services. Among all sectors of the sharing economy, short-term rental is becoming more and more popular and important. In Chapter 4, I empirically study the behaviors of hosts on Airbnb, the leading sharing economy platform. I compare the differences between professional hosts and amateur hosts, showing that amateur hosts tend to charge higher prices, provide better services but less information. These results can be helpful to the platform, hosts and the legislative authorities.
