Book ESSAYS IN INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION

Book excerpt: The dissertation comprises two chapters in empirical industrial organization with a focus on market structure, competition, and the organizational form of firms. The first chapter studies the determinants of the market structure in the lodging industry where firms are heterogeneous in their quality types. In particular, I develop and estimate a dynamic, structural model of entry and exit to analyze the quality mix of hotels across geographic markets. I find that the entry costs, fixed costs, and competition pattern are important determinants of the quality mix. I use the framework to examine the impact of land use regulation on the quality mix of hotels in the lodging industry. The results suggest that land use regulation asymmetrically increases the sunk entry cost of high-quality hotels and shifts the quality mix of hotels to the low-end. The previous literature points out that land use regulation has anticompetitive effects and hence affects the utilities of consumers. My findings imply that land use regulation further affects consumers through its impact on the quality choice of firms. The second chapter discusses the impact of organizational form on the quality decisions of firms. I estimate the causal impact with the data of four leading brands in the fast-food industry. Fast-food chains have both franchised and company-owned stores. Since the two types of stores face different agency problems (free-riding of franchisees and shirking by store managers), it is unclear which one would offer products with superior quality. After controlling for market-level heterogeneity and endogenizing the organizational forms, I find that company-owned stores generally provide products and services of inferior quality to franchised ones. Additionally, I analyze how monitoring and the degree of repeat customers together affect quality in addition to organizational forms.

Book Empirical Studies in Industrial Organization

Download or read book Empirical Studies in Industrial Organization written by David B. Audretsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical Studies in Industrial Organization brings together leading scholars who present state-of-the-art research in the spirit of the structure-conduct-performance paradigm embodied in the work of Leonard W. Weiss. The individual chapters are generally empirically or public policy oriented. A number of them introduce new sources of data that, combined with the application of appropriate econometric techniques, enable new breakthroughs and insights on issues hotly debated in the industrial organization literature. For example, five of the chapters are devoted towards uncovering the link between market concentration and pricing behavior.

Book excerpt: This dissertation contains three chapters on topics in industrial organization. Chapter 2 examines the accuracy of the Hypothetical Monopolist Test, a test for market definition which is often used in the legal analysis of mergers. Chapter 3 analyzes the use of market share discounts by firms and the effect of these discounts on profits and consumer welfare. Chapter 4 investigates pricing practices where a service is offered for a fixed fee plus a multipart usage fee. In Chapter 2, the accuracy of the Hypothetical Monopolist Test (HMT) is examined. In applying the test, two separate models are considered. In each model, the true extent of the product market is known. First, the HMT is applied in a linear differentiated demand model with n firms each producing one symmetrically differentiated product. The test consistently underestimates the number of products in the relevant market in this setting. The second model utilizes a quasi-linear utility specification, and I derive conditions under which the number of products in the market is overestimated. Chapter 3 analyzes the practice of a manufacturer offering a discount or rebate to a retailer if the sales of that manufacturer's product achieve certain benchmarks. Using a vertical model with linear differentiated demand, I find that the welfare effects of market share discount plans can often be positive. The optimal market share discount plan is closely approximates the outcome of vertical integration between the manufacturer and the retailer. This constructive vertical integration can eliminate double marginalization and encourage competing manufacturers to decrease their own wholesale prices. As such, when one manufacturer offers a market share discount plan, the prices of all products may fall. In Chapter 4, I examine pricing plans that include buckets of free units, as are common in the wireless telephone industry. A simple demand structure is established which allows for direct comparisons of the profits and consumer welfare under different pricing plans. The free bucket pricing plans are shown to generate the same profits for the monopolist and the same consumer surplus as two-part tariffs, even when multiple plans are offered to consumers.

Book excerpt: This thesis has two chapters which study market mechanisms in two different industries. The first chapter focuses on understanding why the price of champagne decreases when demand is at its peak. The second chapter aims at measuring consumers' willingness to pay for return policies, in the context of online auctions.

Book Essays in Industrial Organization

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a collection of three chapters that investigate burgeoning empirical issues in industrial organization. In the first chapter, I study platform fee policy with a specific focus on two-sided online marketplaces. The main contributions of the paper are threefold. First, I study a setting with coordinated price experimentation along the three different fee dimensions that are common to such marketplaces. Second, I describe the empirical impact of incomplete fee salience on equilibrium outcomes. Finally, I quantify the network externalities that must be present in order for observed fees to constitute an equilibrium. In the paper, I begin by developing a tractable model of the platform’s problem that generates testable predictions and yields equilibrium conditions in terms of estimable quantities. Then, using estimates from experimental data obtained from a large online marketplace, I quantify the salience and network effects. To conclude, I consider the counterfactual level and composition of equilibrium platform fees under when these effects are muted or absent. In the second chapter, using data from the same source as in chapter one, I study small sellers competing on the supply side of online marketplaces. As these platforms grow and markets become increasingly disintermediated, an important concern is whether small sellers, who may have limited experience or attention, can individually compete effectively with larger, often professional sellers operating on the same marketplaces. To answer this question, I develop and estimate a structural model that incorporates essential features of the empirical setting, including large and rapidly changing choice sets and buyer heterogeneity. Using the estimated model, I compute optimal pricing policies under various informational and computational restrictions. I find that small sellers adhering to a simple strategy can obtain nearly optimal expected revenue and that this strategy’s information requirements are easily satisfied in the online setting. Additionally, I present suggestive evidence that sellers learn to approximate such a strategy through repeated market interactions. In the third and final chapter, I investigate the industrial impacts of firm control rights, which confer discretion over firm policy and are usually shared between debt and equity holders. Control rights operate along a continuum and are difficult to measure. As a proxy, I consider the discontinuous shift in control from equity holders to creditors due to loan covenant violations, a common form of technical default. This paper contributes to the growing covenants literature in two ways. First, I consider the impact of and response to covenant violations at the industry level, inclusive of firms never in technical default. Second, I empirically document the effects of violations on contemporary product markets. I find that control rights transfers to creditors make firms tough in product markets, consistent with the predictions of a stylized model, and that markups decline at the industry level, though the declines are sharpest for firms directly affected.
