Book excerpt: Models and measurements intercomparison II (MM II) summarizes the intercomparison results from model simulations and observations of stratospheric species. Representatives from 23 modeling groups using 29 models participated in these MM II excercises between 1996 and 1999. Twelve of the models were two-dimensional zonal-mean models while 17 were three-dimensional models. This was an international effort as seven were from outside the U.S.A. Six transport experiments and five chemistry experiments were designed for various models. Models participating in the transport experiments performed simulations of chemically inert tracers providing diagnostics for transport. The chemistry experiments involved simulating the distributions of chemically active trace gases including ozone.

Book The NASA Ames Research Center One And Two Dimensional Stratospheric Models Part 2 The Two Dimensional Model

Download or read book The NASA Ames Research Center One And Two Dimensional Stratospheric Models Part 2 The Two Dimensional Model written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-dimensional model of stratospheric constituents is presented in detail. The derivation of pertinent transport parameters and the numerical solution of the species continuity equations, including a technique for treating the stiff differential equations that represent the chemical kinetic terms, and appropriate methods for simulating the diurnal variations of the solar zenith angle and species concentrations are discussed. Predicted distributions of tracer constituents (ozone, carbon 14, nitric acid) are compared with observed distributions. Whitten, R. C. and Borucki, W. J. and Watson, V. Book The NASA Ames Research Center One And Two Dimensional Stratospheric Models Part 1

Download or read book The NASA Ames Research Center One And Two Dimensional Stratospheric Models Part 1 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-dimensional model of stratospheric trace constituents is described in detail. Specifically, the numerical solution of the species continuity equations, including a technique for treating the stiff differential equations representing the chemical kinetic terms, and an appropriate method for simulating the diurnal variations of the species concentrations, are discussed. A specialized treatment of atmospheric photodissociation rates is outlined in the text. The choice of a vertical eddy diffusivity profile and its success in predicting the vertical tracer distributions (carbon 14, methane, and nitrous oxide) are also discussed. Turco, R.
