Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the French Revolution? Was it the triumph of Enlightenment humanist principles, or a violent reign of terror? Did it empower the common man, or just the bourgeoisie? And was it a turning point in world history, or a mere anomaly? E.J. Hobsbawm’s classic historiographic study—written at the very moment when a new set of revolutions swept through the Eastern Bloc and brought down the Iron Curtain—explores how the French Revolution was perceived over the following two centuries. He traces how the French Revolution became integral to nineteenth-century political discourse, when everyone from bourgeois liberals to radical socialists cited these historical events, even as they disagreed on what their meaning. And he considers why references to the French Revolution continued to inflame passions into the twentieth century, as a rhetorical touchstone for communist revolutionaries and as a boogeyman for social conservatives. Echoes of the Marseillaise is a stimulating examination of how the same events have been reimagined by different generations and factions to serve various political agendas. It will give readers a new appreciation for how the French Revolution not only made history, but also shaped our fundamental notions about history itself.

Book Recollections

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexis de Tocqueville
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2016-12-14
  • ISBN : 081393902X
  • Pages : 510 pages

Download or read book Recollections written by Alexis de Tocqueville and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexis de Tocqueville’s Souvenirs was his extraordinarily lucid and trenchant analysis of the 1848 revolution in France. Despite its bravura passages and stylistic flourishes, however, it was not intended for publication. Written just before Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte’s 1851 coup prompted the great theorist of democracy to retire from political life, it was initially conceived simply as an exercise in candid personal reflection. In Recollections: The French Revolution of 1848 and Its Aftermath, renowned historian Olivier Zunz and award-winning translator Arthur Goldhammer offer an entirely new translation of Tocqueville’s compelling book. The book has an interesting publishing history. Yielding to pressure from friends, Tocqueville finally approved its publication, although only after those portrayed in the work—most, unflatteringly—had died. After Tocqueville’s death, his grandnephew published a redacted version, but it was not until 1942 that French editors restored the potentially offensive passages. Goldhammer’s is the first English translation to do justice to Tocqueville’s original uncensored masterpiece of analytical description, stylistic subtlety, vivid social panorama, and incisive critique of political blundering and cowardice. Zunz’s introduction—and his addition of several of Tocqueville’s ancillary speeches, occasional texts, and letters—round out a unique volume that significantly enhances our understanding of the revolutionary period and Tocqueville’s role in it. In this new edition, Zunz highlights the persistent influence of the United States on the life and work of a man who tirelessly, albeit futilely, promoted the American model of government for the New French Republic.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 2 However, one finds that this and the other little prop has been added, where possibility allowed. Civil-list and Privy purse were from of old well cared for. King's Constitutional Guard, Eighteen hundred loyal men from the Eighty-three Departments, under a loyal Duke de Brissac; this, with trust worthy Swiss besides, is of itself something. The old loyal Bodyguards are indeed dissolved, in name as well as in fact; and gone mostly towards Coblentz. But now also those Sans culottic violent Gardes Francaises, or Centre Grenadiers, shall have their mittimus: they do ere long, in the Journals, not without a hoarse pathos, publish their Farewell; wishing all Aristocrats the graves in Paris which to us are denied.b They depart, these first Soldiers of the Revolution; they hover very dimly in the distance for about another year; till they can be remodelled, new-named, and sent to fight the Aus trians; and then History beholds them no more. A most notable Corps of men; which has its place in world-history - though to us, so is History written, they remain mere rubrics of men; nameless; a shaggy Grenadier Mass, crossed with bufi-belts. And yet might we not ask: What Argonauts, what Leonidas' Spartans had done such a work? Think of their destiny: since that May morning, some three years ago, when they, unparticipating, trundled ofl' d'espréménil to the Calypso Isles; since that July evening, some two years ago, when they, participating and sacreing with knit brows, poured a volley into Besenval's Prince de Lambesc! History waves them her mute adieu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They are com bated stoutly by Jules Flammermont, in his valuable volume La Journee du 14 Juillet, published in 1892 for the Societe de l'histoire de la Revolution Francaise. His volume exists ostensibly for the pur pose of printing the fragment of the unpublished me moirs of L. G. Book History of the French Revolution of 1848 Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1848, Vol. 1 of 2 Louis Philippe of Orleans was called to the throne as the living and crowned revolution of 1789. This prince yet lives, but there is as wide a Space between the throne and exile as between life and death, and Ishull speak of him with the same freedom as if he had ceased to exist. Living, I did not atter him. I held myself at a respectful distance from his kingdom and his favors; and, exiled and dead to power, I will not insult him. Exile and years command more respect than even the grave, from the hearts of men. France had the right to suffer him to fall from the throne. History, in my opinion, will have neither the right of hating nor that of disdaining him. The man occupies a large space by himself in his reign, and his reign will fill a great space also in history. There is nothing so mean as to dwarf one's enemies. The people who have suc ceeded Louis Philippe have no need of this subterfuge of kings, who always insult their predecessors. The people are great enough to measure themselves with a dethroned king, and to concede his full height to the sovereign they have displaced. Book History of the French Revolution of 1848 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the French Revolution of 1848 Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Alphonse De Lamartine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1848, Vol. 2 The announcement of a History of the Revolution of 1848, by the author of Les Girondins, who has been admired as the hero of that great event, was speedily followed by the publication of the book at Paris. An early copy of the work having been placed by us in the hands of the translators, they commenced their task at short notice, and under a pledge of rapid execution. Yet, in fulfilling the latter condition, they were to endeavor conscientiously to avoid injustice to the original. As far as possible, they have aimed to render every phrase of the historian by its equivalent in English, and not a line of his has been suppressed. The difficulties encountered can be fully appreciated only by those who are aware how completely the resources of the French, that flexible and copious language, have been exhausted by the ingenuity and genius of Lamartine, and how difficult it is to grasp some of his poetical and philosophical ideas and expressions. With these brief remarks, this brilliant contribution to the historical literature of the nineteenth century is submitted, in a separated form, to the candor and discernment of the American public. Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities is one of Charles Dickens’s most popular and dramatic stories. It begins on a muddy English road in an atmosphere charged with mystery and it ends in the Paris of the Revolution with one of the most famous acts of self-sacrifice in literature. In between lies one of Dickens’s most exciting books—a historical novel that, generation after generation, has given readers access to the profound human dramas that lie behind cataclysmic social and political events. Famous for its vivid characters, including the courageous French nobleman Charles Darnay, the vengeful revolutionary Madame Defarge, and cynical Englishman Sydney Carton, who redeems his ill-spent life in a climactic moment at the guillotine (“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done”), the novel is also a powerful study of crowd psychology and the dark emotions aroused by the Revolution, illuminated by Dickens’s lively comedy. With an Introduction by Simon Schama
