This book was released on 1994 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This effort was a research program to investigate the (coherent and incoherent) nonlinear optical properties as a function of color centers. The investigation included multiwave mixing (four wave mixing and phase conjugation), spectral, and electron paramagnetic resonance properties of gamma-ray induced color centers. Investigations on BaTiO3 include EPR measurement parametric dependence of energy transfer for two coherent beams, influence of Fe and Cu impurities on the origin of photorefractive effects, resonance phase conjugation, and other beam coupling. SBN and BSO were studied. (MM).

Book Transient Phase Conjugation

Download or read book Transient Phase Conjugation written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 3 years, material damage thresholds have been investigated as well as the magnitudes and response times of nonlinear susceptibilities of several important classes of optical materials. In addition, the Modified Twyman-Green Interferometer (MTGI) was invented. The MTGI determines both the magnitude and phase of the nonlinear susceptibility of a material relative to a known standard. This device has found significant acceptance within the optics research community. A phenomenon where energy may be exchanged between two frequency degenerate laser pulses has been characterized. Experimental investigations of optical phase conjugation via degenerate four wave mixing and beam coupling via degenerate two wave mixing using several nonlinear materials are compared. The components of the various physical phenomena which determine a nonlinear optical response as well as the interactions between these components are described. The strengths and weaknesses of the various optical materials and the utility of the MTGI are discussed. Finally, directions for future research are suggested.

Book Two Beam Coupling with Partially Coherent Light

Download or read book Two Beam Coupling with Partially Coherent Light written by Hongzhi Kong and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In photorefractive two-beam coupling the interference of two optical beams creates a refractive index grating resulting in energy transfer between the two beams. In models describing this effect it is usually assumed that both beams have perfect spatial coherence. For some applications such as achromatic volume, holography, multimode fiber gyroscopes and optical phase conjugation through turbulence, spatial coherence effects may become important in the coupling process. Reduced spatial coherence leads lower contrast interference fringes in an interference fringe region smaller than that of the perfectly coherent case. In recent work, we have made a quantitative study of the influence of these effects on coupling under the assumption that the coherence properties of the interacting beams do not change during the coupling. In the present work, we include the influence that beam coupling has on spatial coherence of the interacting beams. It is worth noting that the problem of spatial coherence in nonlinear wave mixing has been studied earlier. However, all of these studies referred to the case of fast Kerr medium. Photorefractive materials are much slower and cannot follow fast changes of the phases of interacting beams. Thus description of the mixing process will be different.

Book Studies of Optical Beam Phase Conjugation by Nonlinear Refraction

Download or read book Studies of Optical Beam Phase Conjugation by Nonlinear Refraction written by R. W. Hellwarth and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We demonstrated the first cw phase-conjugating mirror with gain, and made a self-oscillating resonator which emitted a diffraction-limited optical beam while severe phase aberration was present in the resonator. We demonstrated storable and erasable phase-conjugate images in the nanosecond regime by a one-photon photorefractive process. We achieved the first demonstration of a wide angle (approx. 45 deg.) narrowband approx. 1/10 cm) optical filter using phase conjugation. We achieved the first demonstration of full vector-wave phase-conjugation by which an image was restored after double-passing a birefringent phase aberrator. We demonstrated edge-enhancement of an optical phase-conjugate image in real time. Studies of resonant nonlinear refraction and phase conjugation in sodium vapor continued. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book appears at a time of intense activity in optical phase conjugation. We chose not to await the maturation of the field, but instead to provide this material in time to be useful in its development. We have tried very hard to elucidate and interrelate the various nonlinear phenomena which can be used for optical phase conjugation.

Book Beam Shaping and Control with Nonlinear Optics

Download or read book Beam Shaping and Control with Nonlinear Optics written by F. Kajzar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of nonlinear optics, which has undergone a very rapid development since the discovery of lasers in the early sixties, continues to be an active and rapidly developing - search area. The interest is mainly due to the potential applications of nonlinear optics: - rectly in telecommunications for high rate data transmission, image processing and recognition or indirectly from the possibility of obtaining large wavelength range tuneable lasers for applications in industry, medicine, biology, data storage and retrieval, etc. New phenomena and materials continue to appear regularly, renewing the field. This has proven to be especially true over the last five years. New materials such as organics have been developed with very large second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses. Imp- tant developments in the areas of photorefractivity, all optical phenomena, frequency conv- sion and electro-optics have been observed. In parallel, a number of new phenomena have been reported, some of them challenging the previously held concepts. For example, solitons based on second-order nonlinearities have been observed in photorefractive materials and frequency doubling crystals, destroying the perception that third order nonlinearities are - quired for their generation and propagation. New ways of creating and manipulating nonl- ear optical materials have been developed. An example is the creation of highly nonlinear (second-order active) polymers by static electric field, photo-assisted or all-optical poling. Nonlinear optics involves, by definition, the product of electromagnetic fields. As a con- quence, it leads to the beam control.

Book Laser Beam Coupling Via Optical Phase Conjugation in BaTiO3

Download or read book Laser Beam Coupling Via Optical Phase Conjugation in BaTiO3 written by Karen A. Wink and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear crystal barium titanate was used to couple mutually incoherent argon-ion laser beams using a co-pumped four-wave mixing mechanism which transfers photons from each beam into the phase-conjugate outputs of the others. The four-wave mixing geometry which was used has been described in the literature as the mutually incoherent beam coupler. The beams, all incident on the same crystal a face, form coupling loops as they internally reflect into each other at the opposite crystal corner. Coupling between two and three beams was investigated. Coupling between two beams resulted in phase-conjugate returns which were both self-pumped and co-pumped. Reflectivities of 9% to 42% were obtained for all angles of incidence greater than 50 degrees. (The angle between beams was less than 7 degrees). Keywords: Phase conjugation, Barium titanate, Four-wave mixing, Laser beams, Coupling, Theses. (jes).
