Researched and written from a teachers viewpoint, this work aims ultimately to improve elementary mathematics instruction by creating a better understanding of these irreducibly simple, but often misunderstood, concepts.

Book The Arithmetic of Al Uql dis

Download or read book The Arithmetic of Al Uql dis written by A.S. Saidan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of presenting this book to the scholarly world is twofold. In the first place, I wish to provide for the English reader a translation of the earliest extant Arabic work of Hindi arithmetic. It shows this system at its earliest stages and the first steps in its development, a subject not yet well known except for readers of some Arabic publications by the present writer. This book is therefore of particular importance for students of the history of mathematical techniques. The medieval author, AI-UqHdisI, was, it seems, not noticed by bibliographers; neither was his work, which lay hardly noticed by modern scholars until 1960 when I happened to see a microfilm copy of it in the Institute of Arabic Manu scripts in Cairo. A steady labour immediately followed to make a comparative study of the text together with over twenty other texts, some of them not yet known to scholars. This pursuit resulted in (i) a doctoral degree awarded to me in 1966 by the University of Khartoum, (ii) the publication of several texts in Arabic including the text here translated, and (iii) the publication of several articles in Arabic and English on the history of arithmetic in the Middle Ages. The second purpose of this book is to make the main results of my study available to the English reader.

Book Funtastic FrogsTM Fast Facts Grades K 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The activities in this book are designed to teach strategies for mental computation of addition and subtraction. These strategies should be taught after children have learned addition and subtraction, but before they have mastered the facts. Each strategy is introduced using frog counters to teach a way of thinking how to use numbers to find sums and differences quickly and correctly. The strategies utilize numbers with specific properties of addition and subtraction in ways that make sense to a child. Many of the activity pages are purposely designed to be open-ended and may be customized for practice of facts that children find most challenging

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry, Language and Strategy is a way of looking at game theory or strategic decision-making from a scientific perspective, using standard equations from the fields of engineering and physics. To better approximate reality, it extends game theory beyond the two-player set piece. The book begins where former game theory literature ends OCo with multi-person games on a world stage. It encompasses many of the variables encountered in strategic planning, using mathematics borrowed from physics and engineering, rather than the economic models which have not proven to be good in predicting reality. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (1,364 KB). Contents: Rules-of-the-Game; Flow of Strategic-Mass; Game Symmetries; Analysis; Graphical Presentation; Applications and Open Problems; Appendices: Thermodynamics; Symmetry in Differential Geometry; Central Strategies; Single Strategy Model; Single Strategy Numerical Solutions; Streamlines; Player Fluid. Book Future Times Future Tenses

Download or read book Future Times Future Tenses written by Philippe De Brabanter and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future Times, Future Tenses examines how the future is expressed by means of tense, aspect, and modality across a wide range of languages, among them French, Polish, Basque, Turkish, and West Greenlandic. From the present point of view, the future is not fixed: while there is arguably only one past, the future is largely open and/or indeterminate. Reference to the future has thus become one of the most hotly-debated topics in contemporary linguistics: the interactions of future tense with future time, and of future tense with the semantics of possible worlds, are crucial to any satisfactory account of temporal linguistics. This book considers and seeks a resolution to outstanding issues in the field by uniting linguistic and philosophical perspectives on future reference in natural language. Scholars from different parts of the world approach these issues from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including those of linguistic typology, formal semantics, pragmatics, and philosophy of language. In the process they question the very validity of the traditional notion of a specific marker for future tense. The book shows the close connections between linguistic, logical, metaphysical, ontological, and epistemological issues concerning the future and reveals the value of linking linguistic considerations of tense and aspect to philosophical approaches to modality and time.

Download or read book The Pleasures of Counting written by Thomas William Körner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-12-05 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the connection between the outbreak of cholera in Victorian Soho, the Battle of the Atlantic, African Eve and the design of anchors? One answer is that they are all examples chosen by Dr Tom Körner to show how a little mathematics can shed light on the world around us, and deepen our understanding of it. Dr Körner, an experienced author, describes a variety of topics which continue to interest professional mathematicians, like him. He does this using relatively simple terms and ideas, yet confronting difficulties (which are often the starting point for new discoveries) and avoiding condescension. If you have ever wondered what it is that mathematicians do, and how they go about it, then read on. If you are a mathematician wanting to explain to others how you spend your working days (and nights), then seek inspiration here.

Book Weaving Tales

  • Author : Paula García-Ramírez

Download or read book Weaving Tales written by Paula García-Ramírez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays brings together a wide range of Spanish and Portuguese academics and writers exploring the ways in which our encounters with literatures in English inform our assumptions about texts and identities (or texts as identities) and the way we read them. Mapping, examining, reading and re-reading, fashioning and self-fashioning and, especially, weaving appear as appropriate images that convey the complexity and the nature of creative writing. Such a metaphor has been fundamental for the history of world literature since the Roman poet Ovid had included a tale in his Metamorphoses in which weaving, narration, uncertain identities, and the risks of telling uncomfortable truths all figure prominently. As such, these essays trace the intertwined patterns that knit texts together, weaving identities as well as undoing them and, in the process, interrogating established and official truths.

The question is explored from diverse and radical perspectives: religious, naturalistic, platonistic and skeptical. Does science answer the question? Or does theology? Does everything need an explanation? Or can there be brute, inexplicable facts? Could there have been nothing whatsoever? Or is there any being that could not have failed to exist? Is the question meaningful after all? The volume advances cutting-edge debates in metaphysics, philosophy of cosmology and philosophy of religion, and will intrigue and challenge readers interested in any of these subjects.

Download or read book Scientific Knowledge written by Barry Barnes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-07-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although science was once seen as the product of individual great men working in isolation, we now realize that, like any other creative activity, science is a highly social enterprise, influenced in subtle as well as obvious ways by the wider culture and values of its time. Scientific Knowledge is the first introduction to social studies of scientific knowledge. The authors, all noted for their contributions to science studies, have organized this book so that each chapter examines a key step in the process of doing science. Using case studies from cognitive science, physics, and biology to illustrate their descriptions and applications of the social study of science, they show how this approach provides a crucial perspective on how science is actually done. Scientific Knowledge will be of interest not only to those engaged in science studies, but also to anyone interested in the practice of science.
