The medical term for the condition is termed volvulus and it can occur in the small or large intestine. It may be referred to as small bowel volvulus or colonic volvulus respectively. Where the twist and obstruction are located will dictate the presentation of the condition. In humans, the bowels consist of the small and large intestine. The small intestine is further divided into the jejunum, duodenum, and ileum, and the large intestine is divided into the cecum, rectum, and colonThe most worrisome issue with a twisted bowel is that if the abnormality is not fixed in time, necrosis or cell death will occur due to the obstruction of blood flow to the area.In the western world, the incidence of small bowel volvulus occurs in about 1.7 to 6.2 percent of adults. It may be the result of a primary cause occurring in the abdominal cavity or more commonly due to a secondary cause such as due to an anatomic malformation, adhesions, tumors, or diverticula.

In other words, that's the way we were made. This does not constitute a twisted colon. Variances in colon shape can vary both within families and in the population in general. There are several ways that the colon can become twisted and structurally distorted, including constrictions, ballooning and prolapses that are not normal. The reasons can be numerous, including: chronic constipation, the presence of pathogenic organisms, nutritional deficiencies, a toxic-laden colon, lack of adequate fiber in the diet, and stress. Some gastroenterologists believe that the colon can become twisted due to Cesarean section. The twisting can be caused by the surgeons pushing things out of the way to get the babies out. When twists are present they often occur along with constrictions. A twisted colon can be very painful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veteran food writer Linda Lau Anusasananan opens the world of Hakka cooking to Western audiences in this fascinating chronicle that traces the rustic cuisine to its roots in a history of multiple migrations. Beginning in her grandmother’s kitchen in California, Anusasananan travels to her family’s home in China, and from there fans out to embrace Hakka cooking across the globe—including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Peru, and beyond. More than thirty home cooks and chefs share their experiences of the Hakka diaspora as they contribute over 140 recipes for everyday Chinese comfort food as well as more elaborate festive specialties. This book likens Hakka cooking to a nomadic type of "soul food," or a hearty cooking tradition that responds to a shared history of hardship and oppression. Earthy, honest, and robust, it reflects the diversity of the estimated 75 million Hakka living in China and greater Asia, and in scattered communities around the world—yet still retains a core flavor and technique. Anusasananan’s deep personal connection to the tradition, together with her extensive experience testing and developing recipes, make this book both an intimate journey of discovery and an exciting introduction to a vibrant cuisine.

What are the dishes customarily prepared to mark the day? What would one eat to break a fast? In what order should you serve the various dishes that form part of a wedding feast? The answers to these and other questions relating to the preparation and serving of Sindhi food are all here in this comprehensive guide to a distinctive culture.

Lesser known plays such as The Holdup, Sarah and Abraham, Traveler in the Dark, and Loving Daniel Boone are also discussed. This casebook includes an interview with Norman commenting on her work and her place in American theater as well as a review of 'night, Mother by drama critic Robert Brustein. The essays analyze Norman's works in comparison to the works of other playwrights and examine the mother/daughter relationships of the characters as well as Norman's sense of a woman's place within a patriarchal culture.
