Book excerpt: All Evan Savage wanted was a quiet night at the bar, waiting for his boyfriend to finish his shift; what he gets instead is a nightmare. Things were complex enough when his biggest problem was the tangled sex life he and his brother Brennan share with twin lovers Alek and Luka. When a selfless act ending in terrible violence lands Evan in the hospital, Brennan and Evan's father returns to loom over their lives, asking questions none of the four want to answer. The young men's relationships to each other begin to unravel as carefully drawn boundary lines are blurred and crossed. The four must question the nature of their commitments to each other, what they each want, and what to say to those relentlessly demanding the truth. When the most dangerous thing you can do is admit to who you love, and jealousy is a luxury you can no longer afford, brutal honesty is the only remaining key to salvation... ...or damnation. (M/M+)

Book Twin

Download or read book Twin written by Allen Shawn and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-12-30 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartbreaking yet deeply hopeful memoir about life as a twin in the face of autism. When Allen Shawn and his twin sister, Mary, were two, Mary began exhibiting signs of what would be diagnosed many years later as autism. Understanding Mary and making her life a happy one appeared to be impossible for the Shawns. At the age of eight, with almost no warning, her parents sent Mary to a residential treatment center. She never lived at home again. Fifty years later, as he probed the sources of his anxieties in Wish I Could Be There, Shawn realized that his fate was inextricably linked to his sister's, and that their natures were far from being different. Twin highlights the difficulties American families coping with autism faced in the 1950s. Shawn also examines the secrets and family dramas as his father, William, became editor of The New Yorker. Twin reconstructs a parallel narrative for the two siblings, who experienced such divergent fates yet shared talents and proclivities. Wrenching, honest, understated, and poetic, Twin is at heart about the mystery of being inextricably bonded to someone who can never be truly understood.

Book New Understandings of Twin Relationships

Download or read book New Understandings of Twin Relationships written by Barbara Klein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Understandings of Twin Relationships takes an experience-based approach to exploring how twin attachment and estrangement are critical to understanding the push and pull of closely entwined personal relationships. Based on the research expertise of each of the authors (all identical twins in their own right), and vignettes from twins across the globe, this book describes the inner workings of the twin-world, showing how the twin-world creates experiences that are often more intense and intricately textured than those in the singleton-world. Chapters debunk myths surrounding twinship and analyze the developmental stages of the twin relationship as well as the effect of being a twin on one’s mental health from different perspectives. The authors articulate how attachment, separation anxiety, loneliness, estrangement, and the subjective experience of the twin and non-twin "other" impact behavior, thinking, and feeling. Through its careful study of the many psychological challenges that twins face throughout their lifetime, this text will help psychologists, scholars, clinicians, and twins themselves attain a deeper understanding of all interpersonal relationships.

Book excerpt: All Evan Savage wants is a quiet night at the bar, waiting for his boyfriend, Alek Popovic, to finish his shift; what he gets instead is a nightmare. If Evan thought his life was complicated when his biggest problem was his tangled, complex sex life, it becomes infinitely more so once one selfless act ends in terrible violence. With life hanging in the balance, closely guarded secrets about the nature of Evan's relationships, not only with Alek, but Alek's identical twin brother Luka and Evan's own twin brother Brennan, are threatened. Family is notified. Questions are asked. Suspicions are raised. The four young men's relationships with each other begin to unravel as carefully drawn boundary lines are crossed again and again. The foursome must question the nature of their commitments to each other, what they each want and what to say to those relentlessly demanding the truth. When the most dangerous thing you can do is admit to whom you love, and selfishness and jealousy are luxuries you can no longer afford, brutal honesty is both salvation and damnation. (M/M)

Book excerpt: The story opens by describing my life in Baltimore before meeting my wife Ruth. In mid-adolescence, I become aware of a strong inner feeling that tells me that the right girl is waiting for me and all I have to do is find her. As an only child, I am really very lonely and anxious for the companionship of the right girl. I spend a lot of time searching for her and getting mixed up with the wrong girls. I do indeed find her and discover that she is a twin. I begin to date her and court her. I find that I am not at all attracted to her twin sister. Thus begins my education on the unusual world of twins and the difficulty of getting along with them. My relationship with Ruth rapidly develops into true love. I develop a very close relationship with Ruth's family. Our love is tested when I am drafted into the Korean War. After the war, it takes a few years for our lives to settle down. We get married in 1957 and live with her twin sister and mother. Having always lived with her twin sister and family, our married life cannot be described as normal. Ruth's twin sister gets married and also lives with us. Then, Ruth and I have two children. Our household is crowded! The story describes the many changes and adjustments necessary over the years to survive our unusual life with emphasis on the enduring true love between Ruth and I. It is our enduring true love that enabled us to not only survive, but to lead a life of happiness that was far above and beyond normal.

Book excerpt: Maggie Franklin plays by the rules but lives in a world of people driven by competing motivations, leading to conflict and betrayal, touching those closest to her. She works at a high-end PR firm in Nashville, Tennessee, owned by Richard Gadly, who occupies the gray space between legal and illegal in the intersecting spheres of business and politics. The way she sees herself clashes with the reality of her work: co-workers hustling and violent; the success of her boyfriend's career, dependent on the crooks she's desperate to avoid; and the need to control events by the instinct to survive. In the background lurks the creeping authoritarianism infecting Western democracies. The history of jazz provides a soft thread connecting the book's characters. If experiencing jazz can be thought of as discovery, so too is the evolution of complicated individuals, sketched in vivid detail, revealed against the struggle for power. Within that struggle is a story about identity - who we are now versus the people we used to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2022 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title Takes the first in-depth look at the New York City adoption agency that separated twins and triplets in the 1960s, and the controversial and disturbing study that tracked the children’s development while never telling their adoptive parents that they were raising a “singleton twin.” In the early 1960s, the head of a prominent New York City Child Development Center and a psychiatrist from Columbia University launched a study designed to track the development of twins and triplets given up for adoption and raised by different families. The controversial and disturbing catch? None of the adoptive parents had been told that they were raising a twin—the study’s investigators insisted that the separation be kept secret. Here, Nancy Segal reveals the inside stories of the agency that separated the twins, and the collaborating psychiatrists who, along with their cadre of colleagues, observed the twins until they turned twelve. This study, far outside the mainstream of scientific twin research, was not widely known to scholars or the general public until it caught the attention of documentary filmmakers whose recent films, Three Identical Strangers and The Twinning Reaction, left viewers shocked, angered, saddened and wanting to know more. Interviews with colleagues, friends and family members of the agency’s psychiatric consultant and the study’s principal investigator, as well as a former agency administrator, research assistants, journalists, ethicists, attorneys, and—most importantly--the twins and their families who were unwitting participants in this controversial study, are riveting. Through records, letters and other documents, Segal further discloses the investigators’ attempts to engage other agencies in separating twins, their efforts to avoid media exposure, their worries over informed consent issues in the 1970s and the steps taken toward avoiding lawsuits while hoping to enjoy the fruits of publication. Segal's spellbinding stories of the twins’ separation, loss and reunion offers readers the behind-the-scenes details that, until now, have been lost to the archives of history.

Book excerpt: "A fresh look at infidelity, broadening the focus from the havoc it wreaks within a committed relationship to consider also why people do it, what it means to them, and why breaking up is the expected response to duplicity — but not necessarily the wisest one.” — LA Review of Books From iconic couples’ therapist and bestselling author of Mating in Captivity comes a provocative and controversial look at infidelity with practical, honest, and empathetic advice for how to move beyond it. An affair: it can rob a couple of their relationship, their happiness, their very identity. And yet, this extremely common human experience is so poorly understood. What are we to make of this time-honored taboo—universally forbidden yet universally practiced? Why do people cheat—even those in happy marriages? Why does an affair hurt so much? When we say infidelity, what exactly do we mean? Do our romantic expectations of marriage set us up for betrayal? Is there such a thing as an affair-proof marriage? Is it possible to love more than one person at once? Can an affair ever help a marriage? Perel weaves real-life case stories with incisive psychological and cultural analysis in this fast-paced and compelling book. For the past ten years, Perel has traveled the globe and worked with hundreds of couples who have grappled with infidelity. Betrayal hurts, she writes, but it can be healed. An affair can even be the doorway to a new marriage—with the same person. With the right approach, couples can grow and learn from these tumultuous experiences, together or apart. Affairs, she argues, have a lot to teach us about modern relationships—what we expect, what we think we want, and what we feel entitled to. They offer a unique window into our personal and cultural attitudes about love, lust, and commitment. Through examining illicit love from multiple angles, Perel invites readers into an honest, enlightened, and entertaining exploration of modern marriage in its many variations. Fiercely intelligent, The State of Affairs provides a daring framework for understanding the intricacies of love and desire. As Perel observes, “Love is messy; infidelity more so. But it is also a window, like no other, into the crevices of the human heart.”

Book excerpt: This volume had its beginnings in the two-day colloquium, "Rethinking Chichén Itzá, Tula and Tollan," that was held at Dumbarton Oaks. The selected essays revisit long-standing questions regarding the nature of the relationship between Chichen Itza and Tula. Rather than approaching these questions through the notions of migrations and conquests, these essays place the cities in the context of the emerging social, political, and economic relationships that took shape during the transition from the Epiclassic period in Central Mexico, the Terminal Classic period in the Maya region, and the succeeding Early Postclassic period.

Book excerpt: If Jesus had an identical twin, it would be possible for one twin to be crucified and the other to appear to be resurrected. The political climate of the time would shape the plot to give Israel the sense of itself to overthrow the Roman occupation and rid themselves of King Herod. The twins would be ardent patriots and Zealots who would be carefully trained to accomplish their mission. In addition, they both would have to be totally committed to their God.
