Book excerpt: When Stephenie Meyer's first novel, Twilight, was published in 2005, it received an astounding reception, selling millions of copies. The three sequels that followed--New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn--became international bestsellers as well. The worldwide success of the movie adaptations further cemented the series as a cultural force. In The Twilight Saga: Exploring the Global Phenomenon, Claudia Bucciferro has assembled a collection of essays that examine the series from a variety of perspectives. The essays in this volume consider both the books and the movies, emphasizing the relationship between the texts, the audience, the entertainment industry, and other aspects of the multimillion-dollar franchise. Making sense of how the popular franchise fits within larger contexts, this collection addresses Twilight from an interdisciplinary framework, including insights from history, philosophy, literature, sociology, fan studies, intercultural communication, film studies, and more.

Book Subjective Criticism

Download or read book Subjective Criticism written by David Bleich and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981. The meaning and objectives of literature, argues David Bleich, are created by the reader, who depends on community consensus to validate his or her judgements. Bleich proposes that the study of English be consciously reoriented from a knowledge-finding to a knowledge-making enterprise. This involves a new explanation of language acquisition in childhood, a psychologically disciplined concept of linguistic and literary response, and a recognition of the intellectual authority of pedagogical communities to originate and establish knowledge. Amplifying his theoretical model with subjective responses drawn from his own classroom experience, Bleich suggests ways in which the study of language and literature can become more fully integrated with each person's responsibility for what he or she knows.

Book The Sleepwalkers

  • Author : Hermann Broch
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2023-02-15
  • ISBN : 9781773239071
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Sleepwalkers written by Hermann Broch and published by . This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in the US in 1932, The Sleepwalkers is about three protagonists "sleepwalking", that is, living between vanishing and emerging ethical systems just as the somnambulist exists in a state between sleeping and waking. Together they present a panorama of German society and its progressive deterioration of values that culminated in defeat and collapse at the end of World War I. The novel explores what Broch described as "the loneliness of the I" in its three parts. The protagonists of the first two parts of the book are represented as holding to certain sets of values. Broch describes the struggles they undergo as their codes for living, or values, prove inadequate to the realities of the social environment they find themselves in. Joachim von Pasenow in the first part is "the romantic". In the second part, August Esch tries to live according to the motto "business is business". Eventually, in the third part, the amoral Huguenau's only standard for behavior is his personal profit. He follows this maxim in all his actions, swindling and murdering without remorse. Ultimately, he reaches a point of zero values without remorse and his dealings bring him finally to the zero point of values. Although Broch doesn't hold Huguenau up as someone to admire, he does present him as the inevitable harbinger of fascism. As one reviewer noted, "His characters are sleepwalkers because their own lives are shaped by the forces of the nightmare reality in which they live."
