Book excerpt: "The effects of fertilization with nitrogen (N) alone, and in combination with sulphur (S), on the growth and foliar nutrition of six immature, managed Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca [Beissn.] Franco) stands in the Interior Cedar-Hemlock (ICH) biogeoclimatic zone of British Columbia are reported 6 years after treatment. Results indicate that interior Douglas-fir stands growing on circummesic sites within the ICH zone are generally responsive to fertilization. Disregarding results from one installation that was damaged by Armillaria root disease, average net volume response following fertilization with N alone was 13.5 m3/ha (range: 6.5-24 m3/ha) compared to the control treatment. Six-year volume gains from N+S additions averaged 16 m3/ha (range: 10-23 m3/ha). In relative terms, stand volume responses to fertilization with N and N+S averaged 24% (range: 8-41%) and 28% (range: 16-39%), respectively. Growth projections generated by the tipsy growth and yield program indicate that the accelerated stand development following a single fertilizer application will likely reduce biological rotations (i.e., culmination of mean annual increment) and technical rotations (e.g., minimum harvestable age) by 2-3 years. Relative growth responses compare favourably with results from Douglas-fir fertilization studies in other jurisdictions.‍?‍?Pre- and post-fertilization foliar nutrient analyses indicate that several of the sites were marginally S deficient, and that S status deteriorated 1 year following N fertilization. Added S was readily taken up, thereby maintaining a favourable N:S balance in trees fertilized with N+S. Despite improvements in foliar S status, the incremental growth benefits of added S may be too small on most sites to justify the extra expense involved in blending and applying N+S fertilizers in large-scale aerial operations.‍?‍?Results from this study, and others, indicate that pre-fertilization levels of foliar N and sulphate S (SO4) may have utility in selecting candidate stands and in making appropriate fertilizer prescriptions. For example, the largest growth responses following fertilization may be expected in stands with pre-fertilization foliar N levels less than 11.5 g/kg ( 13 g/kg when using dry combustion analytical methods). Book excerpt: Interior spruce (the white spruce/Engelmann spruce complex) is the most commonly planted tree in British Columbia and has the greatest value to the forest economy of the province. The Ministry of Forests initiated an ambitious breeding program for interior spruce in the late 1960s aimed at producing sufficient quantities of genetically improved seeds to meet demand for forest regeneration. The program started with designating three selection units across the complex, based mostly on biogeoclimatic information. In each unit, desirable phenotypes were selected and their genetic merit was tested in open pollinated progeny trials. This report summarizes 20-year test results on the performance & variability of the selected open-pollinated families in the East Kootenay selection unit. Results are presented regarding height growth, survival rates, diameter, stem volume, and variations in parameters among specific sites in the unit.

Book excerpt: On a site with a high water table and thick forest floor near Smithers, B.C., two year-old Interior spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss X Picea engelmanni Parry) container seedlings were outplanted onto mineral soil, H-layer material, F-layer material, and rotten wood. Large and small screef sizes were utilized. Temperature and volumetric water contents of the various substrates were monitored over the 1989 growing season, and fertilization with NH4NO3 was carried out at the beginning of the 1990 growing season. Destructive sampling of the seedling population took place in August 1989 and August 1990 in order to determine height, root collar diameter, root mass, shoot mass, total seedling mass, and shoot to root ratio. Foliar N concentrations were also determined in late August 1990. Differences in height and diameter for the seven screef size/substrate treatments were not significant, but the organic substrates produced seedlings of greater root, shoot, and total seedling mass than did mineral soil. Greater seedling mass was correlated most strongly with higher substrate temperature, and to a lesser extent with lower soil moisture content, as well as with higher foliar N concentration. There were no significant differences in survival between the treatments. Seedlings growing in the organic substrates had higher foliar N levels, and fertilization improved growth for all parameters. It is concluded that on sites such as this, better growth results can be achieved by planting Interior spruce seedlings high above the water table in F-layer material, where conditions are warmer and drier, than by making deep screefs down to more traditionally acceptable planting substrates such as mineral soil or even the well decomposed H-layer material.

Book excerpt: Mixtures of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and naturally regenerated or planted lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm. ex S. Wats.) occur throughout interior British Columbia. To develop effective management strategies for mixed stands where softwood timber production is the primary objective, silviculturists need information about levels of broadleaves that can be retained without seriously reducing conifer performance. They also require practical guidance on using this information to develop cost-effective treatment prescriptions. To address this topic in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, a pine-aspen competition project that includes studies in a variety of ecosystems is currently under way. In 1999, an operational trial to study the effects of variable aspen retention on stand-level lodgepole pine performance and aspen sucker production was established near McKinley Lake in the SBSdw1 variant of the Central Cariboo Forest District. The study was a co-operative undertaking by the B.C. Ministry of Forests and Weldwood of Canada, Ltd. In 2002, the study was adopted by the Silvicultural Systems Research Group of the Southern Interior Forest Region as part of the pine-aspen competition project, and objectives and methods were subsequently adapted to include the collection of long-term growth and yield and stand development data. This report summarizes fourth-year pine and aspen responses to aspen retention treatments, and provides baseline stand development information.
