This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern Arizona This study demonstrates that the ability of Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa var. Scopulorum Engelm.) to respond to stand treatment pro vides considerable flexibility for the manager to choose initial stand management strategies. Furthermore, it still permits future changes as management objectives or market conditions change. Early predictions (schubert 1971) and the 20-year results presented here differ considerably, indicating that volume production estimates covering long periods of time should be interpreted with care. Management guidelines involving intermediate entries, however, can be formulated with a greater degree of certainty. For example, the study results suggest that a reasonable cutting cycle would be about 20 years, provided that there is a roundwood market when the second thinning is made. For sawtimber yields, in contrast, the minimum elapsed time between the first and second thinning appears to be about 30 years, with longer cut ting cycles necessary if a minimum diameter limit of greater than 7 inches cm) is desired. Book Twenty Year Growth of Ponderosa Pine Saplings Thinned to Five Spacings in Central Oregon Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twenty Year Growth of Ponderosa Pine Saplings Thinned to Five Spacings in Central Oregon Classic Reprint written by James Willis Barrett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Year Growth of Ponderosa Pine Saplings Thinned to Five Spacings in Central Oregon Stand density and understory vegeta tion have had significant effects on height growth throughout 20 years of observation following thinning. Under story vegetation has had the greatest effect on height growth at the wider spacings, reducing growth from 15 to 50 percent during some periods. Twenty years after thinning, low density plots contain less woo'd fiber than high density plots. On the other hand, widely spaced trees are much larger than narrowly spaced trees and collectively are now producing almost as much wood volume annually as high density plots. Even though most of the trees left after thinning were 70 years old, stagnated, and suppressed by overstory, they have responded well to overstory removal and release, and trees at the three widest spacings appear capable of producing a usable crop of timber despite their advanced age. Book Growth of Planted Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern California

Download or read book Growth of Planted Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern California written by William W. Oliver and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth was strongly related to growing stock level (GSL) for 5 years after thinning 20-year-old poles on Site Index50 115 land at the Elliot Ranch Plantation in northern California. Five GSL's- basal areas anticipated when trees average 10 inches d. b. h. or more - ranging from 40 to 160 square feet per acre were tested. Periodic annual increment (PAI) in diameter decreased curvilinearly from 0.51 to 0.21 inch, with increasing GSL's from 40 to 160. But only trees in plots heavily thinned to GSL 40 (and briefly in GSL 70) grew faster in diameter after thinning than these same trees grew before thinning. PAI in basal area and net volume rose steadily with increasing GSL9s, reaching 9.0 square feet and 255 cubic feet per acre, respectively, at GSL 160. Apparently, even light thinning reduced volume production, but thinning still is recommended to shorten time until first commercial entry and to promote stand health.

Book Growth of Immature Stands of Ponderosa Pine in the Black Hills Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Immature Stands of Ponderosa Pine in the Black Hills Combinations of the variables sampled can be determined by noting the locations of the entries in tables 4 to 9 (see pages 8 to Each plot was carefully checked for uniformity of density, age, and site index. None of the plots had been thinned or otherwise disturbed during the 20-year period preceding measurement. A complete inventory was made on each plot, and data were obtained for computing the past stand. All trees were bored to determine radial growth at breast height for the past 10 and 20 years. Heights were measured on a sample of the trees and past height growth was determined by boring. The site index of each plot was computed from soil and topography (myers and Van Deusen, 1960b)to avoid errors due to the effect of stand density on tree height. Average age of the main stand on each plot was determined; occasional small invaders in stands of low density were omitted. Dead trees were measured and classed as having died 0-10, 11-20, or 21] years ago. Dead trees on permanent plots and in stands thinned at known dates were used as guides in estimating time of death. Book Growth models for ponderosa pine

Download or read book Growth models for ponderosa pine written by William W. Oliver and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yields for high-survival, unthinned ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) plantations in northern California are estimated. Stems of 367 trees in 12 plantations were analyzed to produce a growth model simulating stand yields. Diameter, basal area, and net cubic volume yields by Site Indices, 40 through 120 are tabulated for stands ranging in age between 10 and 50 years and in spacing between 6 by 6 and 12 by 12 feet. Tables also show diameter distributions by crown classes and stem volumes in cubic feet for plantation-grown ponderosa pine. These data provide both a standard with which to compare the effects of management decisions, and a performance goal.
