It is now seven years since he died, and I no longer feel it a profane thing to think of him or to speak of him as he was. His was so strong a personality, so living, that the note of mourning seems out of place. Somewhere he goes on living Still, intensely human, simple, robust, great-hearted, kind. In whatever position of life he might have been born, he would always have been unlike his fellows. He was born to the country pursuits. Although the actual place of his birth was an old Dublin street under the shadow of Dublin Castle walls, practically from the beginning his business and his place were with flocks and herds, in the rich fields lying south westward of Dublin, under the beautiful mild hills. Book Creighton University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Creighton University: Reminiscences of the First Twenty-Five Years The scope of this work requires us to go further back than the year which marked the beginning of the College; for in no other way can the circumstances and difficulties, attending its opening and progress be properly measured. Hence, a preliminary account of the settlement of Nebraska and of the early condition of the Church in Omaha and its vicinity, becomes necessary. A contrast is needful to enable us to appreciate the re markable achievements of a quarter of a century. Society was exceedingly crude, even long after Nebraska had become a State; education was at a low ebb; opportunities of every kind were lim ited; and the wonder is that our people and institutions so soon outgrew those conditions and developed so marvelously within the memory of men still in the prime of life. Whenever possible, I have preferred to let documents tell their own story and have given the preference to the narrations of those who were eye-witnesses of the events and knew person ally the circumstances about which they speak. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Five Years of My Life and Memoirs of My Mother, Vol. 2 of 2 Since the purchase of this manuscript by the editors, who publish it to-day, its appear ance has been retarded by the events which have filled all France with desolation and woe. Now that the return of peace and order enable us once more to turn our minds to the enjoyment of literary pursuits, it seems a favourable moment to bring Lamartine again before the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Last Sixty-Five Years, Vol. 2 of 2: Commencing With the Battle of Lexington; Also, Sketches of Hos Own Life and Times At this period the country was bare of every thing; those few, very few, who had money, could not purchase necessaries, for they were not to be had. There were no goods in the country, and provisions were very scarce. Ihave rode ten miles back and forth, to purchase salt pork at twenty cents per pound, which was equal to half a dollar now. The men who composed the then late army, were taken from the pursuit of agriculture, and many an acre was left uncultivated accordingly; not even bread was to be had in sufficient quantity, until it could be raised. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After Twenty-Five Years: Reunion Book of the Class of 1881, Princeton The pe-rade was a most imposing affair. The men were simply but strikingly decorated with orange and-black hat - bands, and with wide orange - and - black sashes, worn diagonally over one shoulder and under the other arm and all carried orange and - black - flags. The huge Class Banner was borne aloft by the two men in charge of Headquarters, and the Class was preceded by the Rittenhouse Military Band of twenty pieces, and followed by Pliny Fisk's big automobile with horn honking and flags waving. Thirty-eight men ofthe Class lined up for the procession. At the farther end of Dickinson a halt was made, and Rose took the excellent photograph in the frontispiece.* All along the line of march, as we passed groups of spectators, or other classes forming, cheers rang out for the Class of'8 I. At least one wholly disinterested and impartial observer, known to the Sec retary, pronounced '8 I the finest body of men in the parade. The long column of classes made the usual inner circuit of the ball-grounds amid great enthu siasm from the grand stand and bleachers, and then all took seats for the game.
