Book Common Mosses Liverworts and Lichens of Ohio

Download or read book Common Mosses Liverworts and Lichens of Ohio written by Robert Klips and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging illustrated guidebook reveals the fascinating mosses and lichens that homeowners, outdoorspeople, and nature lovers encounter every day in Ohio and the Midwest. In this guide to the most common and distinctive moss, liverwort, and lichen species in Ohio, readers will find concise physical descriptions, facts about natural history and ecology, and tips to distinguish look-alike species, all presented in a friendly, conversational tone. Featuring detailed photographs of the plant and plantlike species in their natural settings, the book covers 106 mosses, thirty liverworts, and one hundred lichens and offers several avenues to match a specimen to its description page. “Where They Grow” chapters spotlight species commonly encountered on field outings, and field keys to help readers quickly identify unfamiliar samples. While designed primarily as an identification tool, this guide also frames moss and lichen spotting in a scientific context. The two main sections—bryophytes and lichens—detail their respective taxonomic kingdoms, explain their life cycles and means of reproduction, and illustrate variation in the traits used for identification. The book is an introduction to the biology of these intriguing but too-often-overlooked organisms and a means to enjoy, identify, and catalog the biodiversity all around us.

The subject is not soon exhausted; for the objects treated of, though small, are numerous, and each has more to tell of its own beautiful structure and associations than the Space I in tend to occupy will permit. AS in the first series, my aim Shall be rather to enlist your good-will to the study of these plants, than enter fully into scientific detail. This will be best accomplished by presenting Specimens of the plants them selves, and pointing out some of their peculiarities, and the rich store of instructive entertainment they are calculated to afford - convinced that where a love for them is excited, fur ther inquiry will follow as a matter of course. What an interest it adds to a rural walk, when we are able to distinguish, as so many friends, the various plants we meet with, and to call each of them by a name as familiar to us as their own lovely forms The trees, the flowers, and even the little lichens and mosses, become thus more endeared, and. Book excerpt: Junaluska is one of the oldest African American communities in western North Carolina and one of the few surviving today. After Emancipation, many former slaves in Watauga County became sharecroppers, were allowed to clear land and to keep a portion, or bought property outright, all in the segregated neighborhood on the hill overlooking the town of Boone, North Carolina. Land and home ownership have been crucial to the survival of this community, whose residents are closely interconnected as extended families and neighbors. Missionized by white Krimmer Mennonites in the early twentieth century, their church is one of a handful of African American Mennonite Brethren churches in the United States, and it provides one of the few avenues for leadership in the local black community. Susan Keefe has worked closely with members of the community in editing this book, which is based on three decades of participatory research. These life history narratives adapted from interviews with residents (born between 1885 and 1993) offer a people's history of the black experience in the southern mountains. Their stories provide a unique glimpse into the lives of African Americans in Appalachia during the 20th century--and a community determined to survive through the next.
