Book Twenty first Report of the Independent Monitoring Commission

Download or read book Twenty first Report of the Independent Monitoring Commission written by Independent Monitoring Commission and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focusses on the six-month period from 1 September 2008 to 28 February 2009. The murders of two British soldiers in Antrim, just after the report period, confirmed the finding that dissident republican movements - particularly Continuity IRA and the Real IRA - remain a major danger to peace, with a continuing high level of serious violent activity detailed in this report. All the groups are also involved in other ciminal activity such as drug dealing, kidnapping, extortion and smuggling and fuel laundering. The loyalist paramilitaries showed less activity, with the mainstream UDA now needing to address urgently the issue of decommissioning of weapons before the protection of the decommissioning legislation is lifted (by February 2010 at the latest). The UVF appears to be continuing to run down though some members are still involved in criminal activity for personal gain.

Download or read book Twenty second Report of the Independent Monitoring Commission written by Independent Monitoring Commission (Northern Ireland) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focusses on the six-month period from 1 March 2009 to 31 August 2009. The Continuity IRA and the Real IRA remain active and extremely dangerous, with a continuing high level of serious violent activity which is the highest since the Commission started to report in 2004. The report also highlights evidence that recruitment to these organisations has increased. The groups are also involved in other criminal activity such as drug dealing, kidnapping, extortion and smuggling and fuel laundering. The Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) has announced (on 11 October 2009, outside the period of this report) that its armed struggle was over. The Provisional IRA has maintained its political course. The mainstream UDA has decommissioned a quantity of weapons, an important step. The Commission believes the UDA South East Antrim group is now quite separate from the mainstream UDA: it is also committed to decommissioning but progress is very slow. The UVF has also decommissioned some weapons and made major progress, though some members are still involved in criminal activity for personal gain.

Book Independent Commissions and Contentious Issues in Post Good Friday Agreement Northern Ireland

Download or read book Independent Commissions and Contentious Issues in Post Good Friday Agreement Northern Ireland written by Dawn Walsh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks how independent commissions helped to overcome difficulties during the implementation phase of the Good Friday Agreement. These independent groups worked to resolve issues which threatened to derail the peace process, including the reform of policing, the decommissioning of paramilitary weapons, the monitoring of ceasefires, dealing with the past conflict, and the issue of human rights. Each chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the work of a different group finding that the commissions engaged in a broad range of activities. Drawing on the lessons of Northern Ireland the book demonstrates the importance of balancing local and international involvement, the inclusion of expertise, and giving sufficient powers to such bodies. This volume appeals to academics and researchers in a range of disciplines such as politics, peace and conflict studies, international relations, and human rights law. It is of interest to readers who are interested in the Northern Ireland peace process and those seeking to understand how third parties can assist in the implementation of peace agreements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism law and legal practice has been politically and socially controversial to a degree beyond almost any other legal issue during the past few years, and this analytical text contains extensive analysis of these controversies. Terrorism and the Law offers a thoughtful and up-to-date discussion of all the key materials on terrorism law. It provides comprehensive coverage of all the major domestic, European, and international laws, and their impact on the UK. It also contains an extensive examination of the implementation of these terrorism laws, and of the practical issues they raise. The book contains three Parts. Part I focuses on meanings of 'terrorism' in law and political science. It provides the reader with an understanding of the phenomenon and the legal concept, including its statutory definitions, which is essential to the book's assessment of the strategies and tactics adopted in the codes of laws. It also covers normative constraints, such as human rights. Part II focuses on the United Kingdom law. It provides extensive coverage of the major UK terrorism legislation, such as: the Terrorism Act 2000; the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001; the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005; the Terrorism Act 2006; the Terrorism (Northern Ireland) Act 2006; the Justice and Security (Northern Ireland) Act 2007; and the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008. It also examines the key laws and rules relating to terrorism policing and legal processes. It discusses the meaning of these legislative materials, as well as their implementation, and includes reference to case law and practice statements from the police and courts. Part III reflects the impact of European, international and transnational laws and practices, covering international transnational cooperation and extradition, key European Union law measures against terrorism, other international law measures against terrorist activities, and international human rights and terrorism.

Book Terrorism Security and the Power of Informal Networks

Download or read book Terrorism Security and the Power of Informal Networks written by David Martin Jones and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative work examines the concept of the informal network and its practical utility within the context of counterterrorism. Drawing together a range of practitioner and academic expertise it explores the character and evolution of informal networks, addressing the complex relationship between kinship groups, transnational linkages and the role that globalization and new technologies play in their formation and sustainability. By analysing the informal branch of networked organization in the context of security policy-making, the chapters in this book seek to address three questions: how do informal networks operate? which combination of factors draws individuals to form such networks? what are their structures? Informal networks are necessarily elusive owing to their ad hoc development, amorphous structures and cultural specificity but they are nonetheless pivotal to the way organizations conduct business. Identifying and manipulating such networks is central to effective policy-making. Terrorism, Security and the Power of Informal Networks argues that informal networks are important to policy-makers and their mastery is critical to success both in tackling the challenges of hostile networks and in the processes of organizational reform currently preoccupying governments. Practitioners, policy-makers and researchers in the fields of international politics, international relations, history and political science will find much to interest them in this timely resource.

Book Utilities Reform in Twenty First Century Australia

Download or read book Utilities Reform in Twenty First Century Australia written by Malcolm Abbott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilities Reform in 21st Century Australia: Providing the Essentials traces the development and consequences of the economic reform measures undertaken in the utilities sector in Australia (communications, energy, water/wastewater services, and transport) in the last years of the 20th century, and early decades of the 21st century. In doing so, it looks at the process of reform across industries, and across the state and federal jurisdictions, to identify what motivations the various governments had for pursing reform, how change varied across jurisdictions, and what issues arose in the process. Although by the mid-1990s all states and territories and the Australian Government were committed to reforming utilities as part of the National Competition Policy, not all pursued this reform with the same degree of speed and breadth of action. The broad trends of economic reform in Australia, and abroad, are also touched upon, to provide an outline of the wider context in which the reform of the utilities occurred. This book, therefore, explores the relationship between politics and society on the one hand and economic reform on the other; as well on as the efforts of governments in Australia to promote economic growth and the wealth of Australians in an increasingly complex and challenging global economic climate.
