Book excerpt: This updated edition focuses on the communist age in Romania, evaluating earlier democratic and authoritarian-fascist periods as well. It begins by examining essential elements of the historic legacy - nationalism, authoritarianism, economic and social underdevelopment and adverse geopolitical factors - inherited by Romania's rulers after World War I. New chapters have been added on the reign of Nicolae Ceausescu and the political changes currently underway. The author evaluates the difficulties and opportunities Romania faces in the post-communist era, both as a member of the European Community and as a modern democratic state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroes and Victims explores the cultural power of war memorials in 20th-century Romania through two world wars and a succession of radical political changes -- from attempts to create pluralist democratic political institutions after World War I to shifts toward authoritarian rule in the 1930s, to military dictatorships and Nazi occupation, to communist dictatorships, and finally to pluralist democracies with populist tendencies. Examining the interplay of centrally articulated and locally developed commemorations, Maria Bucur's study engages monumental sites of memory, local funerary markers, rituals, and street names as well as autobiographical writings, novels, oral narratives, and film. This book reveals the ways in which a community's religious, ethnic, economic, regional, and gender traditions shaped local efforts at memorializing its war dead.

Book In Search of Romania

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dennis Deletant
  • Publisher : Hurst Publishers
  • Release : 2022-04-28
  • ISBN : 1787388565
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book In Search of Romania written by Dennis Deletant and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imposition of Communist ideology was a misfortune for millions in Eastern Europe, but never for Dennis Deletant. Instead, it drew him to Romania. The renowned historian’s association with the country and its people dates back to 1965, when he first visited. Since then, Romania has made Dennis appreciate the value of shrewd dissimulation, in the face of the state’s gross intrusion in the life of the individual. This vivid memoir charts his first-hand experience of the Communist era, coloured by the early 1970s surveillance of his future wife Andrea; his contacts with dissidents; and his articles and BBC World Service broadcasts, which led to his being declared persona non grata in 1988. In Search of Romania also considers how life went on under dictatorship, even if it was largely mapped out by the regime. How did individual citizens negotiate the challenges placed in their path? How important was the political police, the Securitate, in maintaining compliance? How did dissent towards the regime manifest? How did all this affect the moral compass of the individual? Why did utopia descend into dystopia under Ceaușescu? And how has his legacy influenced the difficult transition to democracy since the collapse of Communism?

Book History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness

Download or read book History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness written by Lucian Boia and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the idea that there is a considerable difference between reality and discourse, the author points out that history is constantly reconstructed, adapted and sometimes mythicized from the perspectives of the present day, present states of mind and ideologies. He closely examines historical culture and conscience in nineteenth and twentieth century Romania, particularly concentrating on the impact of the national ideology on history. Boia's innovative analysis identifies several key mythical configurations and shows how Romanians have reconstituted their own highly ideologized history over the last two centuries. The strength of History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness lies in the author's ability to fully deconstruct the entire Romanian historiographic system and demonstrate the increasing acuteness of national problems in general, and in particular the exploitation of history to support national ideology.

Book Community Networks and Cultural Practices in Twentieth Century Romania

Download or read book Community Networks and Cultural Practices in Twentieth Century Romania written by Mária Szikszai and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community Networks and Cultural Practices in Twentieth-Century Romania: Paper-Based Cultures in the Writings of a Catholic Priest presents an anthropological interpretation of 2,400 documents left behind by a Hungarianized Swabian Catholic priest living in Romania during one of the Eastern European dictatorships of the twentieth century. This book addresses what the pre-digital paper-based culture was like in Eastern Europe from the point of view of the protagonist, a Catholic priest, who lived in a predominantly Orthodox country. The author calls the twentieth century the era of the typewriter. Mária Szikszai’s questions refer to both the epoch and the micro-universe of these people. What was the world like in which the protagonist and the other people he was in contact with lived? How did they live their daily lives? How did they make important decisions? What pains, hopes, and joys did they have? What did they have to say and what were they silent about? This volume presents an anthropological incursion into the life of an Eastern European man who lived almost throughout the twentieth century, during which time he tried to document the era he was living in.

Book For Two Thousand Years

Download or read book For Two Thousand Years written by Mihail Sebastian and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Absolutely, definitively alone', a young Jewish student in Romania tries to make sense of a world that has decided he doesn't belong. Spending his days walking the streets and his nights drinking and gambling, meeting revolutionaries, zealots, lovers and libertines, he adjusts his eyes to the darkness that falls over Europe, and threatens to destroy him. Mihail Sebastian's 1934 masterpiece, now translated into English for the first time, was written amid the anti-Semitism which would, by the end of the decade, force him out of his career and turn his friends and colleagues against him. For Two Thousand Years is a prescient, heart-wrenching chronicle of resilience and despair, broken layers of memory and the terrible forces of history.

Book Socialist Heritage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emanuela Grama
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press

Download or read book Socialist Heritage written by Emanuela Grama and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Romania from 1945 to 2016, Socialist Heritage explores the socialist state's attempt to create its own heritage, as well as the legacy of that project. Contrary to arguments that the socialist regimes of Central and Eastern Europe aimed to erase the pre-war history of the socialist cities, Emanuela Grama shows that the communist state in Romania sought to exploit the past for its own benefit. The book traces the transformation of a central district of Bucharest, the Old Town, from a socially and ethnically diverse place in the early 20th century, into an epitome of national history under socialism, and then, starting in the 2000s, into the historic center of a European capital. Under socialism, politicians and professionals used the district's historic buildings, especially the ruins of a medieval palace discovered in the 1950s, to emphasize the city's Romanian past and erase its ethnically diverse history. Since the collapse of socialism, the cultural and economic value of the Old Town has become highly contested. Bucharest's middle class has regarded the district as a site of tempting transgressions. Its poor residents have decried their semi-decrepit homes, while entrepreneurs and politicians have viewed it as a source of easy money. Such arguments point to recent negotiations about the meanings of class, political participation, and ethnic and economic belonging in today's Romania. Grama's rich historical and ethnographic research reveals the fundamentally dual nature of heritage: every search for an idealized past relies on strategies of differentiation that can lead to further marginalization and exclusion.
