Book Twelve Years in Monastery

Download or read book Twelve Years in Monastery written by Joseph McCabe and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peculiar value of the book becomes apparent when we remember that Mr. Joseph McCabe was formerly Father Antony, a Grey Friar or a member of the English section of the Order of St. Francis. He sums up his experiences in these words: "The writer, after spending twelve years in various monasteries of the Franciscan Order, found himself compelled, in the early part of last year (1896), to secede from the Roman Catholic priesthood. During those years, besides a long familiarity with the tenor of monastic life, a large experience of Catholic educational, polemical, and administrative methods has been accumulated, and it may not be inopportune to set it forth in simple narrative." For the Protestant there is always an air of mystery around the institutions of the Roman Catholic Church. He has often been victimized by the wild and repulsive stories of "the escaped monk." The accounts of monastic life by such men are evidently extremely onesided and bear the marks of exaggeration, to say the least Mr. McCabe is not an "escaped monk" of that kind. He has not simply laid off the monastic garb, but he has put on a manner of life differing in principle and practice from that of the monk. He is an intelligent convert from Catholicism and withal a gentleman in the description of the institution he has left behind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Years in a Monastery Monasticism, inseparable as it is from every great religious system, seems to emanate spontaneously from the fundamental religious idea. China, India, and Europe, despite their marked divergence in conceiving the ultimate objects of religious belief, and the distinct racial and territorial influences that have affected their development, have been equally prolific in monastic institutions - they seem to be evoked by the simple rudimentary story which is common to them all. And, indeed, we cannot wonder that that story has engendered and organised abdication of earthly joys such as the monastic system embodies. Monasteries are among the most intriguing and enduring symbols of Britain's medieval heritage. Simultaneously places of prayer and spirituality, power and charity, learning and invention, they survive today as haunting ruins, great houses and as some of our most important cathedrals and churches. This book examines the growth of monasticism and the different orders of monks; the architecture and administration of monasteries; the daily life of monks and nuns; the art of monasteries and their libraries; their role in caring for the poor and sick; their power and wealth; their decline and suppression; and their ruin and rescue. With beautiful photographs, it illustrates some of Britain's finest surviving monastic buildings such as the cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral and the awe-inspiring ruins of Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Monastery in Time is the first book to describe the life of a Mongolian Buddhist monastery—the Mergen Monastery in Inner Mongolia—from inside its walls. From the Qing occupation of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through the Cultural Revolution, Caroline Humphrey and Hürelbaatar Ujeed tell a story of religious formation, suppression, and survival over a history that spans three centuries. Often overlooked in Buddhist studies, Mongolian Buddhism is an impressively self-sustaining tradition whose founding lama, the Third Mergen Gegen, transformed Tibetan Buddhism into an authentic counterpart using the Mongolian language. Drawing on fifteen years of fieldwork, Humphrey and Ujeed show how lamas have struggled to keep Mergen Gegen’s vision alive through tremendous political upheaval, and how such upheaval has inextricably fastened politics to religion for many of today’s practicing monks. Exploring the various ways Mongolian Buddhists have attempted to link the past, present, and future, Humphrey and Ujeed offer a compelling study of the interplay between the individual and the state, tradition and history.
