Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Fourth Report of the State Entomologist on the Noxious and Beneficial Insects: Of the State of Illinois In a general article on The Corn Bill -bugs in Illinois, pub lished In my Eleventh Report as State Entomologist (pages 1-az6), brief account was given of observations made In fields near Taylor ville, Christian county, in 1902 (page 7) but the data in my pos session concerning injuries to corn at this place and their relation to previous crops and to the history of the land, were not fully util ized in that paper. Our observations and correspondence have made it evident for some time that bill - bug injury to corn is imperfectly appreciated by com growers and but little understood by them, and it consequently seems desirable that the careful work done on this insect injury near T aylorville should now be fully reported and thor oughly discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eleventh Report of the State Entomologist: On the Noxious and Beneficial Insects of the State of Illinois Dear Sir: In submitting the "Eleventh Report of the State Entomologist on the Noxious and Beneficial Insects of the State of Illinois," allow me to express my thanks to you and the Board for the encouragement I have always received from you in this work. I am happy to state with even more emphasis than at the time of submitting my previous report, that the demand for these works is still on the increase in our own State and elsewhere. The outside demand has in fact become so great, that I have been compelled to ask your Secretary to meet it, as far as possible, with copies bound with the Transactions of the Board, as the two hundred separate copies allowed me for distribution were wholly inadequate for this purpose. Although I have material on hand sufficient to make a report about the same size as that of last year, it has been thought best that I cut it down so that it shall not exceed, when printed, one hundred and twenty-five pages. In the preparation of this report I have been aided by Mr. D. W. Coquillett, who resides in the northern portion of the State, and was engaged in making observations for me in that section during the past season; also by Prof. French. As you are well aware, the predictions I made last year (1880) that the Chinch-bugs would probably appear in injurious numbers in 1881 unfortunately for our farmers has proved only too true. This fact tends strongly to confirm me in the belief that my deductions, drawn from a comparison of the weather records of our State and the adjoining sections, are substantially correct, and that the periodicity indicated in my last report is a climatic law of this portion of our country. Judging, therefore, by this apparent periodicity, and what has been ascertained in reference to the history, habits, and cause of increase of these pests (the Chinch-bugs), I have elsewhere ventured to predict with much confidence that they will do no material injury in 1882. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourteenth Report of the State Entomologist on the Noxious and Beneficial Insects of the State of Illinois: Third Annual Report of S. A. Forbes, for the Year 1884 From the above we may infer the usual existence of two broods and at least the occasional occurrence of a third, even in those seasons when the results of their multiplication are relatively ih significant, and the insects themselves escape general notice. Their life history in time of peace hence does not differ materially from that during seasons of immense and wide-extended ravage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twentieth Report of the State Entomologist on the Noxious and Beneficial Insects of the State of Illinois: Ninth Report of S. A. Forbes, for the Years 1895 and 1896 Learning from Mr. Kiem that other trees had to his knowledge been received from New Jersey by his neighbors at about the same time as his own, I decided to appeal to the public spirit of these out. Side nurserymen known to have distributed stock at a time when their own premises were infested and before this fact had been as certained by them, in the hope of securing from them lists of their Illinois customers to whom this suspected stock had been sent out. By correspondence with Professor J. B. Smith, the Experiment Sta tion Entomologist of New Jersey, I secured the names of all nursery men in that state whose premises had at any time been infested with the San Jose scale and who had an outside trade in nursery stock. To my great pleasure, these gentlemen were good enough to send me lists of purchasers in Illinois to whom it seemed to them possible that infested trees or shrubs had at any time been sent. The total number of Illinois localities given on these lists was one hundred and nineteen, and the number of persons receiving stock from these suspected localities was one hundred and forty-six in all. These localities were well distributed throughout the State, from Waukegan and Scales Mound on the north to Villa Ridge on the south, and from Paris and Danville on the east to Moline, Quincy and Alton on the west. To all persons who had imported this sus pected stock a letter of warning and advice was sent from my office October '22, with a request that careful inspection of this material should be made, and that specimens should be sent me if anything of a suspicious character was found. General notice of the facts was also published through the agricultural press of the State and through the Associated Press. Forbes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Eighth Report of the State Entomologist on the Noxious and Beneficial Insects of the State of Illinois, 1915 The corn root-aphis, or corn root-louse, as it is more commonly called, is now the most generally injurious insect pest of the corn field in Illinois. Its injuries have been but little checked by all that has been done and printed concerning it, and they are evidently increasing slow ly in total effect. There is, in fact, no other corn-neld insect which is so frequently called to the attention of the economic entomologist. Nevertheless, the corn-root-aphis problem has been practically solved - not, perhaps, in the best way possible, or as completely as will be the case when time, money, and skilled assistance are all available for fur ther studies and experiments. Undoubtedly, however, if the results which have already been established were generally put to use in the practice of the Illinois farmer, this aphis would presently lose its place at the head of the list of insects affecting corn, and would be classed among those which are onlv occasionally injurious enough to call for special notice. It is the purpose of this article to set forth the results of our more recent investigations and experiments (1907 - 1910) in all necessary de tail, and to show what they signify and how they apply to the routine of corn culture in this state. The key to the control of this insect is to be found in its spring condition in old corn fields which have been infested by it the year preceding; and in the fact that corn is the only crop-plant upon which it lives and multiplies. This is substantially shown by the following facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
