Book Where The Hell Is Tuvalu

Download or read book Where The Hell Is Tuvalu written by Philip Ells and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a young City lawyer end up as the People's Lawyer of the fourth-smallest country in the world, 18,000 kilometres from home? We've all thought about getting off the treadmill, turning life on its head and doing something worthwhile. Philip Ells dreamed of turquoise seas, sandy beaches and palm trees, and he found these in the tiny Pacific island state of Tuvalu. But neither his Voluntary Service Overseas briefing pack nor his legal training could prepare him for what happened there. He learned to deal with rapes, murders, incest, the unforgivable crime of pig theft and to look a shark in the eye. But he never dared ask the octogenarian Tuvaluan chief why he sat immobilised by a massive rock permanently resting on his groin.Well, you wouldn't, would you? This is the story of a UK lawyer colliding with a Pacific island culture. The fallout is moving, dramatic, bewildering and often hilarious.

Book At One With the Heart of Creation

Download or read book At One With the Heart of Creation written by John P. Cock and published by Transcribe Books. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 23 Reflections and 26 Pieces of Verse, etc. (COVER REMARKS) by Thomas Berry, to whom book is dedicated, author of THE DREAM OF THE EARTH, cultural historian and geologian: "As we awaken, in this new millennium, to a dynamic, hitherto scarcely dreamed of future in every phase of life, John Cock's latest book sounds a clarion call for our participation in the great enterprise of enhancing communion between the human and the other-than-human components of the sacred earth community." (MASTER IMAGE) A book about the spirit journey of communion with the power at the heart of creation that motivates us humans to be agents of intercommunion. (From the INTRODUCTION) Section one is about linking our understanding of creation and its interior power to our current human condition: the people of this planet are dispirited. Yet, we are on a spirit journey which is not about "me as a person" but is about "me in relation with all others," human and non-human. The truth we are missing is that spirit happens in the relation between the other and me, or spirit happens in the relations of creation. In this section we explore spirit's presence in everyday life and the dynamics of the spirit journey. In section two, . . . How do we begin to deal with the contradiction of our time, which is spirit disrelation? Answer: we become more aware of our experiences of communion with spirit. In section three . . . the focus is the mission of creation as mutual care or intercommunion . . . a way to talk about our resolve and action to comprehensively interrelate with and care for creation as it cares for us. . . . The change we envision will not come from the ought of sustainability, will not come from more democratic governments, more economic prosperity, or a better educated populace. It will come from a more conscious spirit journey of communion and intercommunion of a growing movement of people around the planet.

Download or read book Unity of Heart written by Keith Chambers and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2000-10-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of years ago, Polynesian voyagers discovered and settled Nanumea atoll, a tiny cluster of coral islets in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The community prospered, first evolving into a traditional culture finely tuned to the atolls limited environment and then weathering new changes imposed by missionaries, colonial officials, and Westernization itself. Now one of eight separate island communities comprising the modern Pacific nation of Tuvalu, Nanumea faces new challenges: rising sea levels, globalization, and massive social and economic changes. Using personal stories that evoke the difficulties and excitement of fieldwork, Keith and Anne Chambers draw on more than twenty-five years of ethnographic research in Nanumea to craft an engaging account of Nanumean culture and social organization. Readers will come to appreciate how the communitys intense sharing obligations, service-oriented chieftainship, and a flexible system of extensive kinship reckoning define a lifestyle that differs fundamentally from modern Western society.

Book Global Environmental Issues

Download or read book Global Environmental Issues written by Frances Harris and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-01-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting the needs of upper level students, this book treats global environmental problems as complex issues with a network of human and biophysical causes. Each chapter interlinks human demands on the Earth's resources to natural biophysical change - not simply a 'cause and effect' treatment of global issues and environmental change Includes coverage of contemporary hot topics such as biodiversity, urbanisation and sustainable development Global case studies (two per chapter) contextualise theory for students "This book should have considerable appeal among undergraduate and postgraduate students in a broad range of disciplines. Frances Harris has assembled a team of well-qualified authors, who between them consider such important environmental issues as climate and sea level change, biodiversity, GM crops, energy supply, urbanization, pollution and sustainable development. The style is clear and non-technical, the coverage is global and the text is supported by numerous figures and illustrations. Boxed case studies provide useful exemplification of general issues. I have no doubt that this book will be very popular with my own students, in providing detailed analysis of a range of key environmental issues which are frequently reported in the media." Tony Binns, University of Sussex, UK "This book usefully realises that environmental issues are a complex blend of contested science, broader socio-political contexts and the concerns, values, attitudes and livelihoods of individuals. Written by internationally recognised authors, it covers major global issues such as pollution, energy, climate change, sea level rise, food production, urbanisation and sustainability in an informative way, with abundant case studies and illustrations, which clearly exemplify just how complex the facets of the issues can be. It does not offer easy solutions but it is a good exercise in awareness for the reader." Stephen Trudgill, Robinson College, University of Cambridge, UK

Book Allegories of the Anthropocene

Download or read book Allegories of the Anthropocene written by Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Allegories of the Anthropocene Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey traces how indigenous and postcolonial peoples in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands grapple with the enormity of colonialism and anthropogenic climate change through art, poetry, and literature. In these works, authors and artists use allegory as a means to understand the multiscalar complexities of the Anthropocene and to critique the violence of capitalism, militarism, and the postcolonial state. DeLoughrey examines the work of a wide range of artists and writers—including poets Kamau Brathwaite and Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Dominican installation artist Tony Capellán, and authors Keri Hulme and Erna Brodber—whose work addresses Caribbean plantations, irradiated Pacific atolls, global flows of waste, and allegorical representations of the ocean and the island. In examining how island writers and artists address the experience of finding themselves at the forefront of the existential threat posed by climate change, DeLoughrey demonstrates how the Anthropocene and empire are mutually constitutive and establishes the vital importance of allegorical art and literature in understanding our global environmental crisis.

Book Christian Theology in the Age of Migration

Download or read book Christian Theology in the Age of Migration written by Peter C. Phan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are living in the "Age of Migration" and migration has a profound impact on all aspects of society and on religious institutions. While there is significant research on migration in the social sciences, little study has been done to understand the impact of migration on Christianity. This book investigates this important topic and the ramifications for Christian theology and ethics. It begins with anthropological and sociological perspectives on the mutual impact between migration and Christianity, followed by a re-reading of certain events in the Hebrew Scripture, the New Testament, and Church history to highlight the central role of migration in the formation of Israel and Christianity. Then follow attempts to reinterpret in the light of migration the basic Christian beliefs regarding God, Christ, and church. The next part studies how migration raises new issues for Christian ethics such as human dignity and human rights, state rights, social justice and solidarity, and ecological justice. The last part explores what is known as "Practical Theology" by examining the implications of migration for issues such as liturgy and worship, spirituality, architecture, and education.
