Book excerpt: Today we know learning to read can be hard and we know why. It is a complex task our brain must accomplish-and it can with explicit teaching of the sounds of our written language. Explicit instruction of the sounds of our language in a sequential manner (beginning and ending consonant sounds, short vowels, long vowels, syllables, morphemes) provides children with the fundamental knowledge and skills by which they can further enlarge this knowledge and develop these skills (self-teaching). Written by an outstanding scholar, Tutorin' Tim's Phonics, smoothly knits together the complex and direct approaches needed to assist children with developing reading and spelling skills. Building on a previous edition, it has been reformatted to included chapters with instructional guidelines for specific phonetic skills. In addition, this edition includes unique illustrations of vowels and consonants depicted with human characteristics, which assists students with connecting written letters to sounds.

Book excerpt: Today's neuroscience has concluded that reading is visual-our eyes see each letter and our brain turns the letter into a sound then strings the sounds into a word. This establishes the need for instruction that assists the learner with seeing the sounds (letters), saying the sounds, then saying the word accurately, fluently, and effortlessly. Furthermore, this instruction must be accompanied by spelling: what we can read, we can spell. Spelling is auditory and assists the learner with hearing the sounds, spelling the sounds (letters), then spelling the word. Even learners exhibiting signs of dyslexia can become enhanced readers and spellers when instruction tells, then shows, the sounds of our language, followed by practice of reading and spelling the sounds in the words. Dr. Timothy Houge has prepared sixty-six detailed lessons for use with beginning and intermediate readers of all ages. These lessons align with how the brain learns to read and spell and are meant to reduce preparation time, leaving more time to focus on instruction and the needs of the learner.

The content is IDENTICAL to the Little Companion Readers you have known and loved for 25 years. This is the Alpha-Phonics and How To Tutor Little Companion Readers Book to accompany phonics reading instruction in either Alpha-Phonics or How To Tutor by Samuel L. Blumenfeld. Each of the 10 Readers contained in the NEW BOOK has a short story which is ideal for little beginners. The Readers are coordinated to where the student is as he/she progresses through either Alpha-Phonics or How To Tutor. First Reader covers short A lessons, Second Reader covers short E lessons and so on throughout the first 77 lessons. Very popular with teachers and students. Many children say even with the First Reader: Oh! Mommy, I am reading my own book! Economical, durable & reusable. The Readers are in large type so as to be easy for little beginners and are short in length: 6 to 10 pages. They challenge the student without overdoing it. The Readers contain only the words the student has already learned up to that point. Eight have a complete short story that the beginners in particular really enjoy. The other two have lists of practice sentences. After the first 77 lessons the student, while still learning from the remaining lessons in either Alpha-Phonics or How To Tutor, is capable of working with a wide variety of outside practice reading books. The first five Readers in the Book deal with one short vowel each: a, e, i, o, and u. Book one for example deals with the first 12 lessons. Reader # 6: Short vowels with digraphs like ch, sh and wh, through lesson 35. Reader # 7 More Short vowels, through lesson 42. And so on. Reader #8 Short vowels mixed, through lesson 49. Reader # 9 Short vowels through lesson 57. Reader # 10. Short vowels through lesson 71. A BONUS is that the Readers aid in developing comprehension as you go. Download or read book How To Teach Phonics written by Janice Porter and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Phonics? Phonics is the MAGIC KEY that unlocks and opens the door to the wonderful world of Reading. Learning to read by Phonics is merely converting the letters of our English-speaking alphabet into their respective sounds. Phonics is the natural and logical way to learn to read.Phonics is the Science of sounds as it applies to letters or groups of letters called phonograms. Since words form from the sounds the letters make, we teach the sounds first- and not the names of the alphabet letters in the beginning (but teach in a later lesson). This gets him on the Reading road quickly, rather than bogging him down for months with alphabet instruction. Without the use of Phonics, the love of Reading is undeveloped, comprehension misunderstood, vocabulary limited, and Spelling difficult. With Phonics, children from Kindergarten-age to adults in business have learned to read, spell, and write without having to memorize hundreds- if not thousands of words. Once learning the sounds is under way, students are reading words, and shortly after that, complete sentences. But what sets this phonics program apart from others, is that words are taught in 'Families', include Reading 'Rules', and exceptions to those rules. Reading and Spelling taught apart from word families leave the student confused over many words that sound alike but are spelled differently. How to Teach Phonics (by this author) is such a book that will give the best foundation for Reading and Spelling. I cannot stress enough the importance of teaching words in their own families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impressive volume contains the edited proceedings of a symposium held in honor of Isabelle Y. Liberman, whose teaching and writings laid the foundation for contemporary views of reading disability. Her work has influenced ways of thinking about the nature of the problem and ways of working with children and adults who experience unusual difficulty in learning to read. The symposium covered four themes that were central to Dr. Liberman's research on reading acquisition and disability: the development of phonological awareness, the relationship between phonological awareness and success in learning to read and write, the investigation of other phonological processes associated with reading and writing performance, and the implications of current research on these matters for reading instruction. The text includes a paper on each topic, followed by commentaries which introduce additional research findings and theoretical considerations -- all by leading researchers in the field.

Book Reading Fluency

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy Rasinski
  • Publisher : MDPI
  • Release : 2021-01-21
  • ISBN : 3039432680
  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Reading Fluency written by Timothy Rasinski and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.
