Book Turfgrass Water Conservation

Download or read book Turfgrass Water Conservation written by Stephen T. Cockerham and published by UCANR Publications. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is an increasingly valuable and limited resource, often perceived as being wasted on turfgrass. This much-anticipated second edition brings clear, current, science-based information on turfgrass management and water conservation to turf managers and researchers alike. Inside you’ll find a look at the current understanding of water use as well as new technologies being researched to reduce water use by turfgrass. Attention is paid to water quality and turfgrass as a key part of the urban environment, how integrating turfgrass with other landscape uses of water can be part of a conservation plan, and how various water qualities, including reclaimed water, can be part of a management plan. Chapters also cover •advances in drought, heat, and salinity stress tolerance •the role of water in modified root zone media and native soils •water management technologies •considerations for construction and management of urban green spaces including parks and golf courses •water depletion, pesticide and nutrient runoff A chapter summarizing the practical application of the science in each chapter rounds out the text, presenting the information in an immediately useable format. Includes 10 tables and figures, 20 color photos, a U.S. customary to metric conversion table, and an 8-page glossary.

Book excerpt: The management of grassland and its role in the countryside has changed considerably during the 15 years since the first edition of Grass was published. The book has therefore been completely reorganised and rewritten to reflect these developments and the corresponding changes to the undergraduate curriculum. The emphasis will continue to be the agricultural management of grassland and will include recent developments in agronomy, nutrition, grazing, forage preservation, and the changing nature of farm economics in relation to changes in the basis for farm support. The scope of the book will reflect recent policy and legislative changes affecting grassland and will therefore include the role of grassland in nature conservation and landscape, grassland and amenity uses, the impact of grassland farming on the environment, and grass in organic farming.

  • Release : 1961

Download or read book Grass and People written by Charles Morrow Wilson and published by Gainesville : University of Florida Press. This book was released on 1961 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since earliest Biblical times, grass has been a shaping factor in the history of mankind. The story of the companionship of grass and people is a chronicle of science, invention, experiment, and devotion; of the development of value and beauty; and of the conservation not only of land but of people. As a result of awakened interest since the 1930s, when the Dust Bowl brought the importance of grass so sharply into focus, some 1,700 hitherto unfamiliar varieties of grasses have been recognized. Many more will undoubtedly be brought to light through increasing use of university and government agricultural experiments.

Download or read book Nature and Farming written by David Norton FLS and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conserving and enhancing native biodiversity on farms brings many benefits as well as providing many challenges. Nature and Farming explains why it is important to sustain native plants and animals in agricultural landscapes, and outlines the key issues in developing and implementing practical approaches to safeguarding native biodiversity in rural areas. The book considers the range of ecological and agricultural issues that determine what native biodiversity occurs in farmland and how it can be secured. Many inspiring case studies are presented where innovative approaches towards integrating biodiversity and farm management have been successful, resulting in win–win outcomes for both nature and society. In the integration and synthesis of these case studies lies the kernel of a new paradigm for nature conservation on farms. Although the book focuses on biodiversity conservation on Australian and New Zealand farms, the issues and approaches discussed are applicable to many other developed countries, especially in Europe and North America.

Book Toward a Sustainable Agriculture Through Plant Biostimulants

Download or read book Toward a Sustainable Agriculture Through Plant Biostimulants written by Youssef Rouphael and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, interest in plant biostimulants has been on the rise, compelled by the growing interest of researchers, extension specialists, private industries, and farmers in integrating these products in the array of environmentally friendly tools to secure improved crop performance, nutrient efficiency, product quality, and yield stability. Plant biostimulants include diverse organic and inorganic substances, natural compounds, and/or beneficial microorganisms such as humic acids, protein hydrolysates, seaweed and plant extracts, silicon, endophytic fungi like mycorrhizal fungi, and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria belonging to the genera Azospirillum, Azotobacter, and Rhizobium. Other substances (e.g., chitosan and other biopolymers and inorganic compounds) can have biostimulant properties, but their classification within the group of biostimulants is still under consideration. Plant biostimulants are usually applied to high-value crops, mainly greenhouse crops, fruit trees and vines, open-field crops, flowers, and ornamentals to sustainably increase yield and product quality. The global biostimulant market is currently estimated at about $2.0 billion and is expected to reach $3.0 billion by 2021 at an annual growth rate of 13%. A growing interest in plant biostimulants from industries and scientists was demonstrated by the high number of published peer-reviewed articles, conferences, workshops, and symposia in the past ten years. This book compiles several original research articles, technology reports, methods, opinions, perspectives, and invited reviews and mini reviews dissecting the biostimulatory action of these natural compounds and substances and beneficial microorganisms on crops grown under optimal and suboptimal growing conditions (e.g., salinity, drought, nutrient deficiency and toxicity, heavy metal contaminations, waterlogging, and adverse soil pH conditions). Also included are contributions dealing with the effect as well as the molecular and physiological mechanisms of plant biostimulants on nutrient efficiency, product quality, and modulation of the microbial population both quantitatively and qualitatively. In addition, identification and understanding of the optimal method, time, rate of application and phenological stage for improving plant performance and resilience to stress as well as the best combinations of plant species/cultivar × environment × management practices are also reported. We strongly believe that high standard reflected in this compilation on the principles and practices of plant biostimulants will foster knowledge transfer among scientific communities, industries, and agronomists, and will enable a better understanding of the mode of action and application procedures of biostimulants in different cropping systems.
