Book Remembering Monroeville

Download or read book Remembering Monroeville written by Zandy Dudiak and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before rail and steam encroached on the pastoral communities of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, generations of farmers and miners traversed its green earth and burbling creeks. The dawn of the automobile brought unprecedented development, and the sleepy hamlets soon stirred to become the hub of the suburbs. Zandy Dudiak chronicles this fascinating evolution through tales of hardscrabble frontier living, the coming of the railroad and postWorld War II prosperity. Dudiak reintroduces characters such as the tenacious tavern keeper Widow Miers and Harold Brown, who trained a generation of aviators on the airfields of Monroeville. Stories of lost amusement parks, the faded stars of the Holiday House and the glory days of the Ice Palace recall a Monroeville from days gone by.

Book Music in the Mountains

Download or read book Music in the Mountains written by Kara Rogers Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the role traditional music plays in shaping and solidifying concepts of regional identity in Western North Carolina. The genres of traditional American music encompassed by this study include Ballads, Old-Time Music, and Bluegrass. Despite the ubiquity of these traditions across the national landscape, all three genres are recognized, both within and beyond the Southeast, as being representative of a Southern Appalachian ethos. This work investigates the causes for such deep associations between music and place. Four years of fieldwork and observation, including the author's active participation with the region's Folk Heritage Committee, which hosts traditional music events through the summer months, provides this study's methodological framework. In brief, this work examines the multiple traditional music communities in Asheville, North Carolina, and the surrounding area, provides biographical sketches of a small sampling of area musicians, and shows how individual musicians and distinctive traditional music communities merge at area festivals to reify concepts of regionalism. It finds that the designation of Ballads, Old-Time Music, and Bluegrass Music as Southern Appalachian regional music is both constructed and affirmed by the interplay between outsiders' and insiders' conceptualizations of regional identity.

Book excerpt: "Turtle Creek depicts the Grossman family living on the edge of the lake that used to be the town of Turtle Creek following the collapse of capitalism. The failings of major financial institutions began a domino effect that eventually led to the collapse of government. By the end of the twenty-first century, jobs had ceased to exist as did services like water pressure, sewage treatment, and utilities including electricity. A global team of environmental scientists stepped in and took control by recycling everything not being used. They tore down factories, recycled refineries and cars, gas stations and shopping malls. All that remains are the basic essentials for survival and the technological knowledge capitalism had created. So families have electricity, but only because they know how to charge batteries with bicycles or how a solar panel works. ..." -- from Introduction
