Book excerpt: A shadow hangs over the lands of Kosmaïa, as years of hard won peace are threatened by something sinister in the Desch Mountains. Unable to convince world leaders to respond to the threat without proof, hardened warrior Kaiden is forced to put together a group of elite warriors to enter the mountains to determine the danger that waits there. Twists and turns will lead this group of warriors down paths that lead to dangers that they could never have imagined, and an evil that surpassed Kaiden's greatest fears. Josh Elliott was born and raised in the small, largely forgotten province of New Brunswick, but now lives in the bustling metropolis of Picton Ontario (look it up if you don't get the joke.) Josh fell in love with fiction at a young age, and has refused to grow up since. He's a new comer to the world of finishing novels, but a lifelong writer at heart. He enjoys comic books, punk rock music, epic fantasy and long walks on the beach.

Book Turning

Download or read book Turning written by Jessica J. Lee and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the 2018 Frank Hegyi Award for Emerging Authors “Jessica J. Lee is a writer of rare and exhilarating grace. In Turning, she sounds the depths of lakes and her own life, never flinching from darkness, surfacing to fresh understandings of her place in the welter of natural and human history. A beautiful, moody, bracing debut.” —Kate Harris, award-winning author of Lands of Lost Borders Through the heat of summer to the frozen depths of winter, Lee traces her journey swimming through 52 lakes in a single year, swimming through fear and heartbreak to find her place in the world Jessica J. Lee swims through all four seasons and especially loves the winter. "I long for the ice. The sharp cut of freezing water on my feet. The immeasurable black of the lake at its coldest. Swimming then means cold, and pain, and elation." At the age of twenty-eight, Jessica, who grew up in Canada and lived in England, finds herself in Berlin. Alone. Lonely, with lowered spirits thanks to some family history and a broken heart, she is there, ostensibly, to write a thesis. And though that is what she does daily, what increasingly occupies her is swimming. So she makes a decision that she believes will win her back her confidence and independence: she will swim fifty-two of the lakes around Berlin, no matter what the weather or season. She is aware that this particular landscape is not without its own ghosts and history. This is the story of a beautiful obsession: of the thrill of a still, turquoise lake, of cracking the ice before submerging, of floating under blue skies, of tangled weeds and murkiness, of cool, fresh, spring swimming—of facing past fears of near-drowning and of breaking free. When she completes her year of swimming, Jessica finds she has new strength, and she has also found friends and has gained some understanding of how the landscape both haunts and holds us. This book is for everyone who loves swimming, who wishes they could push themselves beyond caution, who understands the deep pleasure of using the body's strength, who knows what it is to abandon all thought and float home to the surface.

Download or read book Turning The Tide written by Thomas McKelvey Cleaver and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packed with personal accounts of the action, this is a vivid narrative history of the often-overlooked USAAF campaign in North Africa and Sicily in World War II. In 1942, the Western Allies needed to take the offensive against the Axis to relieve pressure on the Soviet Union. With planning for a cross-Channel invasion beset by logistical and operational difficulties, in May 1942 President Roosevelt ordered his military leaders to prepare to support the British in the Mediterranean. This led to the first USAAF units arriving in the Middle East in July, firstly as reinforcements for the British and later as part of the Operation Torch landings in French Morocco and Algeria in November. In little over ten months from the summer of 1942, the USAAF in North Africa grew from nothing to a senior partner, providing aircraft and crews the other Allies were unable to match. The Axis forces that had controlled almost the entire southern shore of the Mediterranean had been swept from the African continent – thanks in no small part to the efforts of the USAAF. Using first-hand accounts from pilots and other aircrew, Tom Cleaver describes how the USAAF units that landed in Morocco were forced to learn their own lessons in combat with veteran Luftwaffe units, and how the experience gained in the skies over North Africa and Sicily was invaluable in developing the air forces that would dominate the skies over Europe in the latter years of the war.

Book Turning for model makers

Download or read book Turning for model makers written by Jürgen Eichardt and published by Verlag für Technik und Handwerk. This book was released on with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the lathe, workpieces can be machined safely and with the advantage of repeat accuracy. Jürgen Eichardt, trained as a lathe operator and an enthusiastic model maker for a long time, has described the great basics of hobby turning in Volume 1 of his reference book "Turning for Model Makers". In Volume 2, he explains the somewhat more difficult operations and shows unusual tools. Knurling and twisting, thread cutting and form turning, the production of radius and form parting steels, turning with the "side parting steel" ... the list of special tasks and their technologies is long, which Jürgen Eichardt presents and explains to the already somewhat more experienced model maker, again with the help of numerous illustrations and important technical tables. As in volume 1, the reader is amazed by model parts that "could never have been turned" and yet are. The extensive appendix contains a list of companies and literature as well as a subject index for both volumes. Anyone who wants to fully exploit the possibilities of his bench lathe will find the right, indispensable instructions in the two-volume technical publication "Turning for Model Builders".
