Book excerpt: This thoughtful, practical guide shows readers a way through the minefield of condemnation and persecution faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Christians and helps foster a faith that is bulletproof—impervious to attacks, yet loving and savvy in its approach. Bulletproof Faith is filled with useful insights and proven spiritual practices that deflect attacks and enhance and strengthen faith by turning attacks into opportunities for spiritual growth. Praise for Bulletproof Faith "Gay and lesbian Christians are constantly demoralized and told they are not children of God. In Bulletproof Faith, Chellew-Hodge reassures gays and lesbians that God loves them just as they were created and teaches them how to stand strong, with compassion and gentleness, against those who condemn them." —Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu "It is an amazing truth that gay and lesbian Christians need to develop a bulletproof faith in order to survive the attack of other Christians. That, however, is the experience of many homosexual persons. Candace Chellew-Hodge has in this book committed herself to the task of making that survival a reality. I salute her and her work." —John Shelby Spong, author, Jesus for the Non-Religious "We know the Religious Right is wrong about same-sex relationships and it's time to move on. But how to withstand their relentless attacks and find lasting peace of soul? Candace Chellew-Hodge offers a practical guide. It met me right where I am. It will touch and help heal many others, too." —Daniel A. Helminiak, professor of psychology, University of West Georgia, and author, What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality

Can you guess how I got my name? I am supposed to be a good kid but after you hear the story, you wont call me good. Oh, God I am sorry! I hate kids calling me, preacher boy. Why are people so cruel? My teacher told me that the two types of kids, who get into the most trouble are, policemans kids. and preachers kids. This year I may just prove it. I hope my dad dont find this, on my computer. He would kill me. Dear God, please show me if your real. I need to know. Or are you just a story like Santa Claus. I just dont know anymore. Please Jesus, help me! I have a mission. That mission is to know the truth. Im not looking to explain the truth to anybody. I only want to know the truth for myself. Do you think that is selfish? I dont. No one can teach you who God is. If there is a God, then you must experience God. So all I wanna know. God, who are you? Are you real? Yesterday we had a funeral for my mom. I know she believed in You, God. Is she safe in heaven? Oh sure, that is what everyone tells me, but I need to know! When I was a kid they told me Santa Claus was real. God I wish I would never of went to the funeral. After the funeral everyone one went up to talk to my father. I just sat there for over one half-hour. No one talked to me. It was like I wasnt there. No one cares, not even my dad. God, I dont think you do either. All dad does is tell me what to do. I just cant be that good. God forgive me. Im no Good. I gave up. It is no use. Today I start the eighth grade. I can see, its going to be a bad year. I got in the lunch line and a new boy, about 14 or 15 years old, asked me to give him some money for lunch. I thought. "Some lawmaker had the idea that he would lower the amount of money that a parent can make to receive free lunches, for their kid. That lawmaker saved money by taking food out of a kids mouth." The kid said. "Will you lone me enough money to buy lunch? I really mean: Will you give me enough money, because I cant pay you back." I saw a tear in his eye. I just knew, he was telling the truth. I never saw this boy before. I hoped this would be the last time. The boy had long hair, an old green army type shirt, and old blue jeans. I condemned him, as not being good enough. Anyone could wear better than that to school. I gave him the money he wanted. I was surprised to see him walk out of the lunchroom, and down the hallway. If he wanted to eat lunch why was he not staying in line? Even

Book Bulletproof Decisions

Download or read book Bulletproof Decisions written by Ruben Ugarte and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are told from a young age that we should strive to make the right decisions, but we aren’t taught exactly how to do this. Every day, we make over 35,000 decisions in our personal and professional lives. How many of those decisions do we get right? This book will help business executives systematically tackle these 35,000 decisions. Executives are forced to make critical decisions that impact their lives, their employees’ lives, and the lives of their customers. Decisions like what products to create, who should be hired, and what divisions to shut down are all commonplace in the executive suite. This book offers three strategies for dealing with decisions: problem-solving techniques, routines, and decision-making frameworks. Each strategy is designed to help readers achieve more clarity, gain time back, and improve the quality of their decisions. The first one focuses on helping readers solve the right problem instead of wasting time on the wrong one. The second strategy helps deal with decisions that need to be made once but can then be executed regularly. The third and final strategy provides a three-step framework for making the most important decisions in their lives. The focus of the author’s work is on helping readers use data to make better decisions. This book gives readers the tools to convert the insights they learn from their data into actionable decisions.

Book Playing for God

  • Publisher : NYU Press

  • ISBN : 1479818135
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Playing for God written by Annie Blazer and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When sports ministry first emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, its founders imagined male celebrity athletes as powerful salespeople who could deliver a message of Christian strength: “If athletes can endorse shaving cream, razor blades, and cigarettes, surely they can endorse the Lord, too,” reasoned Fellowship of Christian Athletes founder Don McClanen. But combining evangelicalism and sport did much more than serve as an advertisement for religion: it gave athletes the opportunity to think about the embodied experiences of sport as a way to experience intimate connection with the divine. As sports ministry developed, it focused on individual religious experiences and downplayed celebrity sales power, opening the door for female Christian athletes to join and eventually dominate sports ministry. Today, women are the majority of participants in sports ministry in the United States. In Playing for God, Annie Blazer offers an exploration of the history and religious lives of Christian athletes, showing that evangelical engagement with popular culture can carry unintended consequences. When sport became an avenue for embodied worship, it forced a reckoning with evangelical teachings about the body. Female Christian athletes increasingly turned to their own bodies to understand their religious identity, and in so doing, came to question evangelical mainstays on gender and sexuality. What was once a male-dominated masculinist project of sports engagement became a female-dominated movement that challenged evangelical ideas on femininity, marriage hierarchy, and the sinfulness of homosexuality. Though evangelicalism has not changed sporting culture, for those involved in sports ministry, sport has changed evangelicalism.

Book excerpt: What do you do when you wake up and feel like you're not enough for your life? Or when you look out the kitchen window as dusk falls and wonder how do you live when life keeps breaking your heart? As Ann Voskamp writes, “great grief isn't meant to fit inside your body. It's why your heart breaks.” And each of us holds enough brokenness to overflow—to be given as the greatest story of our lives. In sixty vulnerably soulful stories, The Way of Abundance moves from self-weary brokenness to Christ-focused givenness. Drawing from the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestseller The Broken Way and Ann's online essays, this devotional dares us to embrace brokenness as a gift that moves us to givenness as a way to draw closer to the heart of God. Christ Himself broke like bread, giving Himself to us so we might have a lifelong communion with Him. Could it be that our brokenness is also a gift to the world? This gentle but exquisitely profound book does nothing less than take you on an intimate journey of the soul. As Ann writes, "The wound in His side proves that Jesus is always on the side of the suffering, the wounded, the busted, the broken." Discover how surrendering in unexpected ways is the first step toward receiving what you long for. Discover the good news that your beauty is not in your strength but in your fragility. Discover why your healing shines radiant through your wounds—and how only in brokenness will you ever be whole—and find the way to the abundance you were meant for.

Book excerpt: How do you serve a god of love when in fact you are a killer of men? How can you call yourself just when you are a righteous hammer that knows no fear or remorse? Does such a man deserve the love of a caring and benevolent god? God’s Assassin is a Lovecraftian tale that follows a killer who serves a higher purpose. A man who is not without flaws, who may even be a villain himself. With his faith to guide him, Father Dominic Rujero must navigate a Machiavellian plot that could spell the end of humanity. His travels will take him around the world as he seeks answers. Allies will come and go, but one thing remains true. Rujero is not just fighting for the sake of the world but also for his own humanity. In a world of demons and technology, is there a place for the righteous to call home? The winner of this war will not only inherit the Earth, but all of its inhabitants as well. Inspired by the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, Mike Pondsmith, and Ian Fleming, God’s Assassin is a blend of supernatural thriller, international spy story, and high-intensity cyberpunk adventure. Set in a very near future, one might wonder if such a secret war is being fought right now. When cosmic horrors are real, are there really any rules that matter? Do the actions of one man make any difference at all? And if that man is flawed, does the taint of those flaws also taint the good that he does for the world? The author was surprised by his conclusions and wonders what yours will be.
