Book Equestrian Cultures in Global and Local Contexts

Download or read book Equestrian Cultures in Global and Local Contexts written by Miriam Adelman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume demonstrates the broader socio-cultural context for individual human-horse relations and equestrian practices by documenting the international value of equines; socially, culturally, as subjects of academic study and as drivers of public policy. It broadens our understanding of the importance of horses to humans by providing case studies from an unprecedented diversity of cultures. The volume is grounded in the contention that the changing status of equines reveals - and moves us to reflect on - important material and symbolic societal transformations ushered in by (post)modernity which affect local and global contexts alike. Through a detailed consideration of the social relations and cultural dimensions of equestrian practices across several continents, this volume provides readers with an understanding of the ways in which interactions with horses provide global connectivity with localized identities, and vice versa. It further discusses new frontiers in the research on and practice of equestrianism, framed against global megatrends and local micro-trends.

Book Equestrian Cultures

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kristen Guest
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2019-01-11
  • ISBN : 022658951X
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Equestrian Cultures written by Kristen Guest and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As much as dogs, cats, or any domestic animal, horses exemplify the vast range of human-animal interactions. Horses have long been deployed to help with a variety of human activities—from racing and riding to police work, farming, warfare, and therapy—and have figured heavily in the history of natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. Most accounts of the equine-human relationship, however, fail to address the last few centuries of Western history, focusing instead on pre-1700 interactions. Equestrian Cultures fills in the gap, telling the story of how prominently horses continue to figure in our lives, up to the present day. Kristen Guest and Monica Mattfeld place the modern period front and center in this collection, illuminating the largely untold story of how the horse has responded to the accelerated pace of modernity. The book’s contributors explore equine cultures across the globe, drawing from numerous interdisciplinary sources to show how horses have unexpectedly influenced such distinctively modern fields as photography, anthropology, and feminist theory. Equestrian Cultures boldly steps forward to redefine our view of the most recent developments in our long history of equine partnership and sets the course for future examinations of this still-strong bond.

Book Raising a Turkoman Horse

Download or read book Raising a Turkoman Horse written by Jace Cooper and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-01-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name "Turkoman horse" is used to describe a specific breed of horse that was first developed in what was formerly the Central Asian country of Turkmenistan. Turkoman horses are renowned for their superior attributes and have inspired the creation of many other sorts of horse breeds and varieties across the Middle East and Asia. Some of the most distinguishing features of Turkoman horses are: - Turkoman horses have a reputation for being exceptionally beautiful. They usually have an elegant head, a graceful neck, and an athletic build. - These horses are bred for speed and endurance, and their reputations precede them. They've been used for lengthy rides, races, and even in the cavalry before. - Because of their intelligence and responsiveness, Turkoman horses can be trained for a variety of equestrian sports. - Coat Quality: Their coat quality is typically good and comes in a variety of hues like gray, bay, and chestnut. This covering protects them from the scorching heat of their native deserts. - High Tail Carriage: Turkoman horses are recognized for their high tail carriage, which gives them a distinctive and royal aspect. - The Turkoman horse has played a crucial part in the evolution of other horse breeds, including the Arabian horse and the Akhal-Teke. Because of their strength and resilience in the desert, these horses were highly prized for use in battle. It's worth noting that the term "Turkoman horse" is used to refer to a variety of horse types and breeds native to the Turkmenistan region rather than a single, standardized modern breed. The Turkomans have a long history with horses, and one particular breed, the Akhal-Teke, is commonly identified with this tradition due to its metallic shine and hardiness. Due to interbreeding with various horse breeds, pure Turkoman horses have become increasingly rare over time. However, the Akhal-Teke in particular has been the focus of conservation and marketing efforts to ensure its continued existence as a unique breed with a rich history.

Book Applications of Traditional Equestrian Sports in the World

Download or read book Applications of Traditional Equestrian Sports in the World written by Adem Kaya and published by . This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical culture and sport, as a product of certain historical conditions for the development of society, form the sum of the historically revealed results of human spiritual activity. Equestrian games were especially popular among the Turkic peoples of South Siberia, Altai, the ancestral home of all Turkic peoples. The horse formed the mobile basis of the nomadic economy and was the personification of beauty, purity, and speed. A symbolic expression of "traditional" sovereign tribal authority depended on the current ruling political framework having quality horses and equestrian skills. It is easy to conclude that this event is formulated again with another tribe or lineage and that the leadership passes to the tribe in which it was formulated. It is clear that in the nomadic ancient Turkic peoples, equestrian activities were not simply an opportunity to reveal their "natural" fighting instincts or to express them through symbols. They are also carefully structured public organizations organized around societal values with broad moral and political repercussions. This book contains twenty chapters reviewing the cultural significance of a variety of traditional equestrian sports around the world, deeply examining the social impacts of the game and the cultural traditions that arise from them.

Whether nomadic or sedentary, its peoples created textiles for every aspect of their way of life, from ceremonial objects marking rites of passage, to everyday garments, to practical items for the home. There were suzanis for the marriage bed; prayer mats; patchwork quilts; bridal ensembles; bags for tea, scissors, and mirrors; lovingly embroidered hats and bibs; and robes of every color and pattern. Book The Culture of the Horse

Download or read book The Culture of the Horse written by K. Raber and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume fills an important gap in the analysis of early modern history and culture by reintroducing scholars to the significance of the horse. A more complete understanding of the role of horses and horsemanship is absolutely crucial to our understanding of the early modern world. Each essay in the collection provides a snapshot of how horse culture and the broader culture - that tapestry of images, objects, structures, sounds, gestures, texts, and ideas - articulate. Without knowledge of how the horse figured in all these aspects, no version of political, material, or intellectual culture in the period can be entirely accurate.
