Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with the rest of the world, the country of Turkey is beset by efforts to push women into a particular prototype. This collection of essays seeks to combat such efforts by delving below the surface of common stereotypes surrounding Turkish women. Encompassing such diverse fields of study as political science, economics, business, ethnography, history, and literature, this work gathers experts from around the world to explore various images attributed to or imposed upon Turkish women. Written from the perspectives of the 1990s, the essays integrate around the unifying theme of changes and continuities in the images of Turkish women from the late 19th-century to the present. The essayists situate the representations of women in their historical and ideological contexts, exposing myths and clarifying the complexities which are connected to them.

Book excerpt: Guided by the accounts of such female travellers as Lady Montagu, Julia Pardoe, and Lucy Garnett, all of whom lived in Ottoman lands for significant periods of time, this beautifully illustrated book explores -- and hopes to overturn -- the 19th-century stereotypes of Ottoman women. Both Eastern and Western accounts of Turkish society during that time made much of the harem, with the Orientalists describing Turkish women as exotic, indolent, and depraved, while some European writers described them as noble and elegant. Then, with the advent of the first women's movement in the West, the harem began to be criticised as an institution that trapped women and enforced their submission to men. All of these ideas were refuted by Montagu, Pardoe, and Garnett, who argued that Ottoman women were perhaps the freest in the world; this book backs up that claim with historical research showing that women frequently prevailed in cases against their husbands and other male relatives in the Ottoman courts.

Book excerpt: This wry and visceral debut novel follows a young Turkish-American woman who, rather than grieving her father's untimely death, seeks treatment for a stubborn headache and grows obsessed with a centuries-old theory of medicine. "[A] humane and refreshingly astringent novel." —Lauren LeBlanc, The New York Times Book Review Twenty-year-old Sibel thought she had concrete plans for the summer. She would care for her grandmother in Istanbul, visit her father’s grave, and study for the MCAT. Instead, she finds herself watching Turkish soap operas and self-diagnosing her own possible chronic illness with the four humors theory of ancient medicine. Also on Sibel’s mind: her blond American boyfriend who accompanies her to Turkey; her energetic but distraught younger sister; and her devoted grandmother, who, Sibel comes to learn, carries a harrowing secret. Delving into her family’s history, the narrative weaves through periods of political unrest in Turkey, from military coups to the Gezi Park protests. Told with pathos and humor, Sibel’s search for strange and unusual cures is disrupted as she begins to see how she might heal herself through the care of others, including her own family and its long-fractured relationships.
