Book Turkish Art of Illumination

Download or read book Turkish Art of Illumination written by Mine Esiner Ozen and published by Gozen Yayin. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before printing, books were written with reed pens using black ink and Arabic letters on papers that were polished with ahar (Mixture made with cornstarch and egg white for polishing the paper) and mühre (a device made of glass, used to make paper smooth and shiny). Important ones were written in “beautiful writing” (Hüsn-i Hat) and embellished with illuminations, marblings, engravings and miniatures. The books prepared in such artistic ways were generally given to Padishahs, lady sultans, and notable people of the time and were dedicated to libraries founded by those who are interested in books. Manuscript libraries that contain the old waqf libraries are today centres of illumination examples. However, it is not that easy for people who would like to see the examples of specific time or illuminator since a catalogue system has not been made yet. It is often not allowed to get pictures from manuscripts (because it will give damage to the books). Therefore, students are not able to see as many examples as they like or they need. Illumination is the name given to the embellishments, which are made with paints and gold, of manuscript books. Consequently, the art of illumination started to disappear as printing came into our country. School of Calligraphers (Medresetü’l-Hattatîn) which was set up in 1914 put the arts of manuscript books into action again. The aim of this book is to constitute a collection of precious examples chosen from unique manuscripts for the learners of illumination. All photos in the book were taken at Suleymaniye Library. In order to reach this goal, the text is meant to be short and examples are chosen from the works most of which have copying dates listed and they are chosen especially from the Seljuk, Beylik and Ottoman periods. Collection name of the book from which the example is taken and its recording number, name of the book and writer if any, outer measure, copying date, page number, name of its illuminator or miniature house if known and appropriate short information about it are written under the pictures. We hope this album of Turkish Illumination Art in which we tried to give as many examples as possible, will be beneficial especially for students. The book also offers techniques and space for practising.

Book Turkish Art

Download or read book Turkish Art written by Esin Atıl and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These more useful but equally appealing arts--ceramics, carpets, and fabrics--are the subject of sections by Walter B. Denny and Louise W. Mackie. Both ceramics and weaving have evolved major artistic traditions in Turkey. Tiles contributed immeasurably to the beauty of the Ottoman buildings and, as is borne out by innumerable book illustrations, the sheen of beautiful fabrics and flow of beautiful rugs were a vital part of what can only be described as the "art" of courtly life under the sultans. Moreover, Turkish tiles and dishes, garments, and rugs have been admired throughout the West for centuries--ever since Marco Polo described "Turkey Carpets" as the "finest and handsomest in the world." Their subtle, complex, and luminously colored designs still enchant us today. An admirably thorough yet succinct chapter by Roderic H. Davison orients the reader to Turkish history.^

Book The Trojan War Museum and Other Stories

Download or read book The Trojan War Museum and Other Stories written by Ayse Papatya Bucak and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A debut story collection of spectacular imaginative range and lyricism from a Pushcart Prize–winning author. In Ayse Papatya Bucak’s dreamlike narratives, dead girls recount the effects of an earthquake and a chess-playing automaton falls in love. A student stops eating and no one knows whether her act is personal or political. A Turkish wrestler, a hero in the East, is seen as a brute in the West. The anguish of an Armenian refugee is “performed” at an American fund-raiser. An Ottoman ambassador in Paris amasses a tantalizing collection of erotic art. And in the masterful title story, the Greek god Apollo confronts his personal history and bewails his Homeric reputation as he tries to memorialize, and make sense of, generations of war. A joy and a provocation, Bucak’s stories confront the nature of historical memory with humor and humanity. Surreal and poignant, they examine the tension between myth and history, cultural categories and personal identity, performance and authenticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will become of us in these trying times? How will we pass the time that we have on earth? In gorgeously rendered graphic form, Light in Dark Times invites readers to consider these questions by exploring the political catastrophes and moral disasters of the past and present, revealing issues that beg to be studied, understood, confronted, and resisted. A profound work of anthropology and art, this book is for anyone yearning to understand the darkness and hoping to hold onto the light. It is a powerful story of encounters with writers, philosophers, activists, and anthropologists whose words are as meaningful today as they were during the times in which they were written. This book is at once a lament over the darkness of our times, an affirmation of the value of knowledge and introspection, and a consideration of truth, lies, and the dangers of the trivial. In a time when many of us struggle with the feeling that we cannot do enough to change the course of the future, this book is a call to action, asking us to envision and create an alternative world from the one in which we now live. Light in Dark Times is beautiful to look at and to hold – an exquisite work of art that is lively, informative, enlightening, deeply moving, and inspiring.
