Book The Revolution in Constantinople and Turkey

Download or read book The Revolution in Constantinople and Turkey written by Sir William Mitchell Ramsay and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramsay published this travel diary very shortly after the Young Turk Revolution. Ramsay, sympathetic to the Young Turks, wished to convey the general feelings and impressions of the people in the Ottoman Empire at the time he traveled through it, thus rumors, mistaken impressions, and incomplete information are not edited out or corrected. However, Ramsay does provide some notes in brackets when he knows of an incorrect report. Ramsay is seemingly in touch with the political situation; he makes a conscientious effort to note incorrect impressions from his informants. Generally it is not clear if he got his information from foreigners living in Turkey, from well-placed Turkish intellectuals, from newspapers, or elsewhere. Ramsay's attitude toward the people of the region is generally sympathetic. He concludes the book by complaining about British red tape in the Foreign Office. Ramsay's wife was a photographer and provided almost all the photographs in the book along with a few chapters related to Turkish women.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Awakening of Turkey: A History of the Turkish Revolution This book was in the press when the counter revolution broke out on April 13. Fortunately I have avoided prophecy, and therefore find that there is no need to make any alterations in what I have written but I have added another chapter to the work, in which an account is given of the counter-revolution, the march on Constantinople of the Macedonian army, the triumph of the Young Turks, the deposition of Abdul Hamid, and the proclamation of Turkey's new Sultan, His Majesty Mohammed V. Though written primarily for French readers there is little in this book which is not of general interest. Moreover what con cerns our French Allies should also concern ourselves. Book Turkey and Its Future Classic Reprint

Download or read book Turkey and Its Future Classic Reprint written by Archibald J. Dunn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turkey and Its Future It is a revolution in political history, and we are only witnessing the first scenes in it. The leaven is working in other Asiatic States, such as Afghanistan, Burmah, Siam, and Tonquin. China is being zealously educated by Japan in all that Western science adapted to Oriental methods can teach, and the next century will no doubt Show extraordinary results, which will change the face of the world. For this reason it Seems to me that the vital interests Of the British Empire are involved in the future development Of Persia and Turkey, the two Empires which alone could threaten our communi cations with India. Russian intrigue is already busy with the former, and German ambition with the latter. I wish, in this pamphlet, to call attention to some facts with regard to Turkey which are too Often overlooked. The first is that from the accession Of the present Sultan, Abdul Hamid II., a new era Of improvement has commenced in the Ottoman Empire. He is an enlightened Sovereign, who is striving to raise the condition of his subjects up to the level Of other States. From the first he cut down the expenses of his palace at Constantinople, and he corrected many of the abuses among the functionaries Of the Government. Commissions were appointed to regulate the finances of the Empire. Concessions were granted to foreign capitalists to construct railways and other public works, as also to develop the enormous riches Of the country. Religious freedom has been granted to Jew's and Christians alik'e. Schools, orphanages, hospitals, &c., have been established and subsidised by the Sultan out of the income Of his Civil List, at the grave risk of alienating the respect of his Moslem subjects. He has had enormous difficulties to contend with; if he has not been able as yet to achieve complete success, let us make allowances, bearing in mind how many years it has taken us in this England of ours to overcome the resistance Of vested interests to the introduction of desirable reforms; for in such matters the Moslem is even more conservative than the Christian. Book The East End of Europe 1908

Download or read book The East End of Europe 1908 written by Allen Upward and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The East End of Europe, 1908: The Report of an Unofficial Mission to the European Provinces of Turkey on the Eve of the Revolution At a moment such as this, when, owing to the action of Austria and Bulgaria, the Near Eastern Question has once more reached a critical stage, thanks are due to any competent writer who may make an honest attempt to throw light on what is taking place in South-Eastern Europe, in what direction soever his personal sympathies may lie. My own views on the Macedonian Question have been expressed in a letter published in The Times of January 22, 1907, and elsewhere. They do not at all points coincide with those set forth in the present volume. Mr. Upward's somewhat idyllic view of Yildiz Kiosk, for instance, is one I am, unfortunately, unable to share. His impartiality, too, may be called in question by some, for his sympathies, are avowedly Greek. But absolute impartiality is hardly to be looked for in a matter so replete with controversial issues, so pre-eminently calculated to excite passion and prejudice. In his own words - "A visitor in Rumelia may be Philhellenic or Bulgarophile, but he cannot be both. If he possesses the friendship and confidence of one side he will never gain that of the other." Download or read book The Conquest of Turkey written by Linus Pierpont Brockett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of Turkey: Or, the Decline and Fall of the Ottoman Empire, 1877-8 Deeming no apology necessary in offering the present volume to the public, either in respect to its subject or our method of presenting it, our preface is designed simply to invite attention to some facts and features of the work. Early last summer, Dr. L. P. Brockett published an interesting work, "The Cross and the Crescent," as an introduction to a history of the war then but just begun. When the time came for writing the history, however, that gentleman, for reasons of health and the pressure of other engagements, relinquished his purpose. Believing that a concise and reliable history would prove of value and interest to Americans, we have undertaken to compile and write one. It will be observed that we have prefixed the substance of Dr. Brockett's work to our history, omitting only those passages which did not appear strictly germane to an introduction. The first eight chapters and the biographies are abridged from the former work, the succeeding chapters are ours. We do not claim that the work is original in the same sense or to the same extent that we should make a treatise or an essay original; for instance, inasmuch as we were not an eye-witness of the battles or historic events narrated, we have necessarily obtained our facts at secondhand. But, on the other hand, we have not blindly copied or heedlessly followed the accounts of any one authority but have critically examined every accessible newspaper, magazine, pamphlet and book, in which information was to be obtained, comparing one with the others, and, when possible, discriminating between the several correspondents and other writers, and between the stated facts and the opinions and suppositions of each. Download or read book Turkey of the Ottomans Classic Reprint written by Lucy M. Garnett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turkey of the Ottomans The Albanians have been recently brought into special prominence by their long maintained revolt against the authority of the Porte. The attempt of the Constitutional Government to consolidate the nation by the uniform application of new measures to all its constituent ethnical elements has had the not very surprising result - considering the dissimilarity of these various elements - Of producing serious hostility to cer tain enactments, especially among the non-turkish Moslems who, under the old régime, had enjoyed special privileges now menaced by the new order. There were, accordingly, risings among the Arabs of the Hedjaz, and risings in Kurdistan, which were more or less speedily suppressed. But the revolt of the Albanians, having more serious causes, proved a more difficult matter. The new enactments especially obnoxious to these highlanders were three in number - (l) Enforcement of the conscription among the tribesmen (2) their general disarmament; and (3) the compulsory use of the Arabic alphabet for their Aryan language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turkey and the War To Mohammed not only was half a loaf better than no bread, but it was better than all the bread of the whole loaf. To him the Old Testament was bet ter than the Old and New Testaments together. He thought a Moslem not only of more value than all the rest of the world, but of more value alone than he would be with the rest of the world added to him. He believed that the Will is of more importance, not only than any other single faculty of man, but of more importance than all the faculties and powers of man - reason, affection and will - under the harmonious sway of a predominant passion like love.
