Book excerpt: This work studies a narrative devoted to the history of the Kokand Khanate, a state that played a great role in Central Asian history in the 18th and 19th centuries, controlling territory equal to continental western Europe, until it was conquered by the Russian Empire in 1876. This unique manuscript, discovered by the editor in Tashkent, is a biography of Alimqul Amir-i Lashkar, Commander-in- Chief of the Kokand army and de facto ruler of the Kokand state in 1863-1865, who died in battle at the age of thirty three. Shortly after his death, Tashkent was captured by Russian troops. The author of this biography was an intimate friend of Alimqul and was actively involved in politics. Book Explorations in the Social History of Modern Central Asia 19th Early 20th Century

Download or read book Explorations in the Social History of Modern Central Asia 19th Early 20th Century written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-07-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-Cold War historiography of modern Central Asia has been characterized by a focus on cultural history. Most of this scholarship rests on a set of assumptions about traditional institutions and social practices which merely reflect the bias of Soviet or even Tsarist-era historiography. 'Explorations in the Social History of Modern Central Asia addresses the need for a remedy to this state of affairs and thus offers new insights on a number of subjects relating to the social history of the region. It includes essays dealing with property relations, resource management, forms of local administration, the constitution of new social groups, the construction of identity categories, and an enquiry into the landscape of Islamic practices among the nomads.

Book Eurasian Slavery Ransom and Abolition in World History 1200 1860

Download or read book Eurasian Slavery Ransom and Abolition in World History 1200 1860 written by Christoph Witzenrath and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has demonstrated that early modern slavery was much more widespread than the traditional concentration on plantation slavery in the context of European colonial expansion would suggest. Slavery and slave trading, though little researched, were common across wide stretches of Eurasia, and a slave economy played a vital part in the political and cultural contacts between Russia and its Eurasian neighbours. This volume concentrates on captivity, slavery, ransom and abolition in the vicinity of the Eurasian steppe from the early modern period to recent developments and explores their legacy and relevance down to the modern times. The contributions centre on the Russian Empire, while bringing together scholars from various historical traditions of the leading states in this region, including Poland-Lithuania and the Ottoman Empire, and their various successor states. At the centre of attention are transfers, transnational fertilizations and the institutions, rituals and representations facilitating enslavement, exchanges and ransoming. The essays in this collection define and quantify slavery, covering various regions in the steppe and its vicinity and looking at trans-cultural issues and the implications of slavery and ransom for social, economic and political connections across the steppe. In so doing the volume provides both a broad overview of the subject, and a snapshot of the latest research from leading scholars working in this area.

Book Russia s Protectorates in Central Asia

Download or read book Russia s Protectorates in Central Asia written by Seymour Becker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Russian conquest of the ancient Central Asian khanates of Bukhara and Khiva in the 1860s and 1870s, and the relationship between Russia and the territories until their extinction as political entities in 1924. It shows how Russia's approach developed from one of non-intervention, with the primary aim of preventing British expansion from India into the region, to one of increasing intervention as trade and Russian settlement grew. It goes on to discuss the role of Bukhara and Khiva in the First World War and the Russian Revolution, and how the region was fundamentally changed following the Bolshevik conquest in 1919-20. The book is a re-issue of a highly regarded classic originally published in 1968 and out of print for some years. The new version includes a new introduction, some corrections of errors, and a survey of new work undertaken since first publication.
