Book Turgenev and Russian Culture

Download or read book Turgenev and Russian Culture written by Joe Andrew and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume has as its central aim a reassessment of the works of Ivan Turgenev for the twenty-first century. Against the background of a decline in interest in nineteenth-century literature the articles gathered here seek to argue that the period in general, and his work in particular, still have much to offer the modern sensibility. The volume also offers a great variety of approaches. Some of the contributors tackle major works by Turgenev, including Rudin and Smoke, while others address key themes that run through all his creative work. Yet others address his influence, as well as his broader relationship with Russian and other cultures. A final group of articles examines other key figures in Russian literary culture, including Belinskii, Herzen and Tolstoi. The work will therefore be of interest to students, postgraduates and specialists in the field of Russian literary culture. At the same time, they will stand as a tribute to the life and work of Professor Richard Peace, a long-standing specialist in nineteenth-century Russian literature, in whose honour the volume has been compiled.

Book excerpt: Leonard Schapiro, one of the world's most distinguished historians of the Russian past, has written the definitive biography of the enigmatic Ivan Turgenev. Based on new sources that have recently come to light in France and Russia, this work is a graceful and meticulous portrayal of the artist's life--the personal and intellectual preoccupations of the man as he thought and formed opinions about contemporary events. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generally thought to be the work that led to the abolishment of serfdom in Russia, "Sketches from a Hunter's Album (A Sportsman's Sketches)" is a series of short stories, written in 1852, that gained Turgenev widespread recognition for his unique writing style. These stories were the result of Turgenev's observations while hunting all over Russia, particularly on his abusive mother's estate at Spasskoye. A definitive work of the Russian Realist tradition, this collection of sketches unveils the author's insights on the lives of everyday Russians, from landowners and their peasants, to bailiffs and mournful doctors, to unhappy wives and mothers. Turgenev captures their tragedies and triumphs, losses and love in a set of stories that condemned the behavior of the ruling class. Considered subversive writing, Turgenev was confined to his mother's estate, yet his "Sketches" opened the eyes of many people of his time, proving him not only an artist but also a social reformer whose abilities ultimately affected the lives of countless Russians.

Download or read book Home of the Gentry written by Ivan Turgenev and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2007-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On one level the novel is about the homecoming of Lavretsky, who, broken and disillusioned by a failed marriage, returns to his estate and finds love again - only to lose it. The sense of loss and of unfulfilled promise, beautifully captured by Turgenev, reflects his underlying theme that humanity is not destined to experience happiness except as something ephemeral and inevitably doomed. On another level Turgenev is presenting the homecoming of a whole generation of young Russians who have fallen under the spell of European ideas that have uprooted them from Russia, their 'home', but have proved ultimately superfluous. In tragic bewilderment, they attempt to find reconciliation with their land.

Book excerpt: When Arkady Petrovich comes home from college, his father finds his eager, naive son changed almost beyond recognition, for the impressionable Arkady has fallen under the powerful influence of the friend he has brought with him. A self-proclaimed nihilist, the ardent young Bazarov shocks Arkady's father by criticizing the landowning way of life and by his outspoken determination to sweep away traditional values of contemporary Russian society. Turgenev's depiction of the conflict between generations and their ideals stunned readers when Fathers and Sons was first published in 1862. But many could also sympathize with Arkady's fascination with its nihilist hero whose story vividly captures the hopes and regrets of a changing Russia.

Book The Anna Karenina Fix

Download or read book The Anna Karenina Fix written by Viv Groskop and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In this hilarious, candid, and thought-provoking memoir, [Groskop] explains how she used lessons from Russian classics to understand herself better.” —Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times–bestselling author As Viv Groskop knows from personal experience, everything that has ever happened to a person has already happened in the Russian classics: from not being sure what to do with your life (Anna Karenina), to being hopelessly in love with someone who doesn’t love you back (Turgenev’s A Month in the Country), or being socially anxious about your appearance (all of Chekhov’s work). In The Anna Karenina Fix, a sort of literary self-help memoir, Groskop mines these and other works, as well as the lives of their celebrated creators, and her own experiences as a student of Russian, to answer the question “How should you live your life?” This is a charming and fiercely intelligent book, a love letter to Russian literature and an exploration of the answers these writers found to life’s questions. “[Groskop is] a delight, a reader’s reader whose professional and personal experiences have allowed her to write the kind of book that not only is complete unto itself, but makes you want to head to the library and revisit or discover the great works she loves.” —The Washington Post “Learn how to hack life nineteenth-century Russian style! You’ll totally be like Anna Karenina without getting (spoiler alert) run over by a train!” —Gary Shteyngart, New York Times-bestselling author “For anyone intimidated by Russia’s daunting literary heritage, this humorous yet thoughtful introduction will serve as the perfect entrée.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: From the most romantic of the Russian greats, an enthralling selection of short stories and novellas Ivan Turgenev was able to contain the narrative sweep of a novel in a single short story. His tales evoke the joy and painful tubulence of first love, the grandiose flights of youthful imagination, and the wistful reflections of maturity. Tugenev brought his characters vividly to life, rendering their complex interior lives, whether nobleman or serf, in writing charged with a profound social conscience. This collection, in a lyrical new translation by Nicolas Pasternak Slater and Maya Slater, places Turgenev's great novella First Love alongside a selection of his classic stories. From the evocative rural scenes of 'Bezhin Meadown' and 'The Rattling!' to the pathos and profundity of 'The District Doctor' and 'Biryuk', these are miniature epics brimming with humanity. Ivan Turgenev was born to an aristocratic family in 1818. He wrote plays, poetry, short stories and novels. A liberal who found himself frequently at odds with tsarist rule, he lived for much of his life in Western Europe, where he became friends with writers such as Gustave Flaubert and Henry James. His most famous novel Fathers and Sons was poorly received by many Russian critics. It is now regarded as one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award Winner of the Margaret Scott Prize For forty years, until the day he died, Ivan Turgenev, one of the greatest novelists of Russia’s Golden Age, was passionately devoted to the diva Pauline Viardot. He followed her and her husband around Europe, even living with them amicably at times as part of their household. Yet as far as we know, the relationship with Pauline was chaste. What then did Turgenev mean by ‘love’, the word at the core of his life and work? In a remarkable work of memoir, literary biography and travel writing, Robert Dessaix has found the pulse that still quickened Turgenev’s age, but has failed in ours. Praise for Twilight of Love by Robert Dessaix ‘The most inventive portrait of a writer’s life and legacy since Flaubert’s Parrot.’ The Independent ‘A marvellous and unusual book.’ The Sunday Times
