Book Modeling of Turbulent Mixing at Density Discontinuities in Nonsteady Compressible Flows

Download or read book Modeling of Turbulent Mixing at Density Discontinuities in Nonsteady Compressible Flows written by R. I. Issa and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document describes a theoretical modeling of turbulent mixing at density discontinuities in nonsteady compressible flows. It is shown that when density and pressure gradients are large and have opposite signs (e.g., near the combustion products/air contact surface in blast waves driven by high-explosive sources), flow perturbations will be amplified, leading to local turbulent mixing. The applicability of using a turbulence model to simulate this process is examined. The conservation laws (for mass, momentum, energy and species) are presented in mass-averaged form, the k-epsilon model of turbulence is applied. The relevant term for the generation of turbulent kinetic energy, the term of dominant importance in this problem, is derived by two independent approaches. This generation term is driven by gradients of pressure and density normal to the interface between the high-explosive products of combustion and the shocked air, and not by shear. The present work is thought to represent the first description of a turbulence model for flows driven by such normal gradients. (Author).

Book Turbulent Mixing in Nonreactive and Reactive Flows

Download or read book Turbulent Mixing in Nonreactive and Reactive Flows written by S. Murthy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

Book Numerical Investigation of Turbulence and Mixing in Shock accelerated Compressible Multi component Flows

Download or read book Numerical Investigation of Turbulence and Mixing in Shock accelerated Compressible Multi component Flows written by Santhosh Kumar Shankar and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is numerically studied in canonical configuration. The discontinuities in the flow field (such as shock waves, contact surfaces and material interfaces) are captured by using a shock-capturing method coupled with a high-order high-resolution compact differencing scheme. Verification and validation is conducted by simulating 1-D and 2-D canonical test problems and comparing the numerical results with experimental data and previous numerical results. High resolution numerical simulation of the impulsive acceleration of a dense gas curtain in air by a Mach 1.21 planar shock (modeling the experiments by Balakumar et al. PoF 2008) is carried out by solving the 3-D compressible multi-species Navier-Stokes equation coupled with a localized artificial diffusivity method to capture discontinuities in the flow-field. The simulations account for the presence of three species in the flow-field: air, SF6 and acetone (used as a tracer species in the experiments). The reshock process is studied by re-impacting the evolving curtain with a reflected shock wave. Turbulence statistics computed in the flow-field following reshock are reported and compared with experiment where possible. Inertial range scaling, vorticity anisotropy and Reynolds stress development are studied in the reshocked flow. The high resolution data set is used to test certain modeling assumptions appearing in mixing models (BHR model) that have been traditionally used to study variable density flows. Finally preliminary results are shown from a 3-dimensional calculation of a planar shock interacting with a planar perturbed interface between air and SF6.

Book Simulation of Turbulent Flows with and without Combustion with Emphasis on the Impact of Coherent Structures on the Turbulent Mixing

Download or read book Simulation of Turbulent Flows with and without Combustion with Emphasis on the Impact of Coherent Structures on the Turbulent Mixing written by Cunha Galeazzo, Flavio Cesar and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of turbulent mixing in complex turbulent flows is a challenging task. The effective mixing of entrained fluids to a molecular level is a vital part of the dynamics of turbulent flows, especially when combustion is involved. The work has shown the limitations of the steady-state simulations and acknowledged the need of applying high-fidelity unsteady methods for the calculation of flows with pronounced unsteadiness promoted by large-scale coherent structures or other sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part aims at providing the physical and theoretical framework of the analysis of density variations in fully turbulent flows. Its scope is deliberately educational. In the second part, basic data on dynamical and scalar properties of variable density turbulent flows are presented and discussed, based on experimental data and/or results from direct numerical simulations. This part is rather concerned with a research audience. The last part is more directly devoted to an engineering audience and deals with prediction methods for turbulent flows of variable density fluid. Both first and second order, single point modeling are discussed, with special emphasis on the capability to include specific variable density / compressibility effects.

Book A Provisional Analysis of Two Dimensional Turbulent Mixing with Variable Density

Download or read book A Provisional Analysis of Two Dimensional Turbulent Mixing with Variable Density written by Paul A. Libby and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A predictive method for the titled flows based on the Prandtl energy method is developed and assessed by comparing prediction with experimental results. For constant density flows both gross properties such as spreading rate and maximum turbulent kinetic energy and detailed properties such as mean shear stress distribution are shown to be well predicted. For variable density flows considerable attention is devoted to the inclusion in the analysis of the added effect of pressure fluctuations and of the variation in the several extant empirical parameters on the turbulent kinetic energy. Book Advances in Compressible Turbulent Mixing

Download or read book Advances in Compressible Turbulent Mixing written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes some recent additions to original material prepared for the Princeton International Workshop on the Physics of Compressible Turbulent Mixing, held in 1988. Workshop participants were asked to emphasize the physics of the compressible mixing process rather than measurement techniques or computational methods. Actual experimental results and their meaning were given precedence over discussions of new diagnostic developments. Theoretical interpretations and understanding were stressed rather than the exposition of new analytical model developments or advances in numerical procedures. By design, compressibility influences on turbulent mixing were discussed--almost exclusively--from the perspective of supersonic flow field studies. The papers are arranged in three topical categories: Foundations, Vortical Domination, and Strongly Coupled Compressibility. The Foundations category is a collection of seminal studies that connect current study in compressible turbulent mixing with compressible, high-speed turbulent flow research that almost vanished about two decades ago. A number of contributions are included on flow instability initiation, evolution, and transition between the states of unstable flow onset through those descriptive of fully developed turbulence. The Vortical Domination category includes theoretical and experimental studies of coherent structures, vortex pairing, vortex-dynamics-influenced pressure focusing. In the Strongly Coupled Compressibility category the organizers included the high-speed turbulent flow investigations in which the interaction of shock waves could be considered an important source for production of new turbulence or for the enhancement of pre-existing turbulence. Individual papers are processed separately.
