Book Turbulent Energy Dissipation in the Atlantic Equatorial Undercurrent

Download or read book Turbulent Energy Dissipation in the Atlantic Equatorial Undercurrent written by William Robert Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free-fall oceanographic instrument has been used to measure vertical microstructure scale gradients of horizontal velocity, temperature and electrical conductivity. The velocity gradients, or shears, were measured at scales between 3 and 40 cm by an airfoil shear probe whose specifications and calibration procedure are discussed. Data collected in the equatorial Atlantic in July 1974 indicated a consistent pattern of turbulence near the velocity core of the Atlantic Equatorial Undercurrent. (The velocity core is the region of maximum speed).

Book Air Sea Interaction

    Book Details:
  • Author : F. Dobson
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • Pages : 797 pages

Download or read book Air Sea Interaction written by F. Dobson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, man's centuries-old interest in marine me teorology and oceanography has broadened. Ocean and atmosphere are now treated as coupled parts of one system; the resulting interest in air-sea interaction problems has led to a rapid growth in the sophistication of instruments and measurement techniques. This book has been designed as a reference text which describes, albng with the instruments themselves, the accumulated practical experi ence of experts engaged in field observations of air-sea interac tions. It is meant to supplement rather than replace manuals on standard routine observations or instnunentation handbooks. At the inception a textbook was planned, which would contain only well tested methods and instruments. It was quickly discovered that for the book to be useful many devices and techniques would have to be included which are still evolving rapidly. The reader is therefore cautioned to take nothing in these pages for granted. Certainly, every contributor is an expert, but while some are back ed up by generations of published work, others are pioneers. The choice of topics, of course, is debatable. The types of observa tions included are not exhaustive and topics such as marine aero sols and radio-tracers are omitted, as was the general subject of remote sensing, which was felt to be too broad and evol ving too rapidly. The guideline adopted in limiting size was maximum use fulness to 'a trained experimentalist new to the field'.

Book Extreme Events and Natural Hazards

Download or read book Extreme Events and Natural Hazards written by A. Surjalal Sharma and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 196. Extreme Events and Natural Hazards: The Complexity Perspective examines recent developments in complexity science that provide a new approach to understanding extreme events. This understanding is critical to the development of strategies for the prediction of natural hazards and mitigation of their adverse consequences. The volume is a comprehensive collection of current developments in the understanding of extreme events. The following critical areas are highlighted: understanding extreme events, natural hazard prediction and development of mitigation strategies, recent developments in complexity science, global change and how it relates to extreme events, and policy sciences and perspective. With its overarching theme, Extreme Events and Natural Hazards will be of interest and relevance to scientists interested in nonlinear geophysics, natural hazards, atmospheric science, hydrology, oceanography, tectonics, and space weather.

Book Spatial Pattern in Plankton Communities

Download or read book Spatial Pattern in Plankton Communities written by John H. Steele and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planning for the conference held at Erice, Sicily, in November 1977, began with discussions among oceanographers from several countries on the need to consider the special problems and the recent results in the study of plankton "patchiness. " An approach to the Marine Sciences Panel of the NATO Science Committee resulted in a planning grant to determine the probable content and participation in such a meeting. The planning group consisted of B. Battaglia (Padua), G. E. B. Kullenberg (Copenhagen), A. Okubo (New York), T. Platt (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and J. H. Steele (Aberdeen). The group met in Aberdeen, Scotland, in September 1976. The proposal for a NATO School on the subject of "Spatial Pattern in Plankton Communities" was accepted by the Marine Science Panel and it was agreed that it be held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice. The Centre began in 1963 with an International School of Subnuclear Physics and has since developed to include courses in many other subjects which cover various fields of basic and applied research. The original aim of the . Centre was to create, in Italy, a cultural forum of high scientific standard which would allow young research workers to appreciate problems currently of major interest in various fields of research.

Book Models of the Equatorial Ocean Circulation

Download or read book Models of the Equatorial Ocean Circulation written by Michael James McPhaden and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equatorial ocean dynamics are investigated using analytical and simple numerical models. The steady circulation is first examined using a linear equatorial beta-plane formulation in which continuous density stratification is a key element. The basin is horizontally unbounded and forced by either winds or a surface temperature boundary condition. Two vertically diffusive models are proposed to examine the effects of different turbulence parameterizations. One is characterized by temperature dissipation proportional to temperature itself, the other has biharmonic friction proportional to a fourth derivative of velocity. Both lead to equations for the steady state that are in many ways analogous to the well-known equations governing equatorial wave motion. The analogies are exploited both in obtaining analytical solutions and in describing the flow dynamics.
