Book Turbulence Characteristics of Counter Flowing Free Jets

Download or read book Turbulence Characteristics of Counter Flowing Free Jets written by Sayed Fazlolah Saghravani and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jets are used in several engineering applications including dilution and mixing. The counter flowing free jet was investigated to find the penetration length and geometry of the expanded jet. The turbulence characteristics of the counter flowing free jets have been determined. Several jet nozzles with different diameters were used to form the jet located at the center of a closed conduit that had a square cross section. The results show that the penetration length varies linearly with the ratio of the jet velocity to the main flow velocity that is denoted by R. Axial and radial velocity components were measured simultaneously using a 2-D laser velocity probe. The raw data was processed and several characteristics of the counter flowing free jets such as the decay rate of the jet and the turbulence behavior of the jet along the jet axis are reported. The turbulent kinetic energy of the counter flowing free jets was studied. Several profiles were chosen and the turbulent kinetic energy was balanced along the radial direction of the jet. The terms including pressure component were used as the closure, since the pressure was not measured. Another major part of the study was to find the wake mixing characteristics of the counter flowing free jets. Several tests with different R values were performed and for each test, the concentration of the tracer injected by the jet to the main flow was measured at several points at different cross sections in the near wake region of the jet. The results show that the mixing between the tracer and the main flow improves with larger jet diameter and bigger velocity ratios. A small part of the study was devoted to numerical test using the software code, Phoenics. Three sets of tests using different turbulence models were performed and the results were compared with the measurement. In comparison, for the case of turbulent jets in counter flow, the k-? model gave a better result than k-? and mixing length models. The results can be applied directly to the control of stream pollution, as the counter flowing free jet is a very effective device to dilute the effluents injected in a stream.

Book The Theory of Turbulent Jets

Download or read book The Theory of Turbulent Jets written by Genrikh Naumovich Abramovich and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's first monograph on turbulent jets, in 1936, dealt solely with a free submerged jet. Since that time, the theory of the turbulent jet has been developed in many published works both in the USSR and abroad: it has been enriched with a large amount of experimental material and has been applied in many new fields of engineering. In the last 10 years very substantial progress has been made, and it has now become possible to go beyond the free submerged jet and to solve the problem of a jet in a stream of fluid, to take into account the interaction between the jet and solid walls, to ascertain the relationship between the contour of the jet and the ratio of its density to the density of the surrounding medium, and to establish the characteristic features of a supersonic jet. This monograph contains the results of further research by the author and his colleagues, as well as a critical reappraisal of the more important theoretical and experimental data published by other investigators. The first section deals with the theory of a turbulent jet of incompressible fluid. It gives a systematic analysis of numerous experimental data on velocity profiles, temperature, and the impurity concentration, as well as the outlines of the turbulent mixing lone. The second section sets forth the theory of turbulent gas jets, including strongly preheated and supersonic jets. The theory of free turbulence in a gas, suitable in principle for any degree of compressibility, is revised, and the equations are derived for motion and heat exchange in the boundary layer of a jet at very high temperature. The third section solves several problems of the spreading of jets in finite and semifinite space, and the fourth section describes various applications of the theory of jets, many of which are reported for the first time or have been significantly revised.

Book Investigation of the Velocity Field of Jets in Counter flow in the Vicinity of a Solid Wall

Download or read book Investigation of the Velocity Field of Jets in Counter flow in the Vicinity of a Solid Wall written by Mohammad Mahmoudi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents experimental investigations showing the mean and fluctuating velocity field of a three dimensional round jet in counter-flow located in the vicinity of a solid wall. The jet to counter-flow velocity ratios ranged from 2.5 to 25 and the jet Reynolds numbers were from 1,000 to 10,000. The ratio of jet centerline distance from the wall over the jet diameter is changed from 0.5 to 4.3. The penetration of the flush mounted jet in counter-flow is measured and compared to the case in which there is no wall available. In addition, the penetration of the jet at various offset distances from the wall is measured and the effect of offset distance is analyzed. The results show that the flush mounted jet has the deepest penetration and as the jet offset distance increases, the penetration decreases to reach the penetration of a free jet in counter-flow. The jet offset distance creates a mechanism that controls the counter-flow entrainment into the jet. The jet velocity decay and spreading rate are analyzed and the effect of offset ratio is discussed. It is found that as the offset ratio increases, the jet velocity decays faster and its spreading rate rises. In addition, the amplitude of random oscillations of the flow increases when the distance of the jets from the side wall increases. The vortical structures of the flow are studied and their impact on the turbulence characteristics of the flow is explained. Two-point velocity correlation study shows that the size of turbulent structures of the flow becomes larger as the jet offset ratio increases. Also, the turbulent transport in the flow enhances dramatically as the jet gets higher distance from the side wall.

This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of turbulent mixing in complex turbulent flows is a challenging task. The effective mixing of entrained fluids to a molecular level is a vital part of the dynamics of turbulent flows, especially when combustion is involved. The work has shown the limitations of the steady-state simulations and acknowledged the need of applying high-fidelity unsteady methods for the calculation of flows with pronounced unsteadiness promoted by large-scale coherent structures or other sources.
