Book Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion System for NASA Next Generation Aircraft

Download or read book Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion System for NASA Next Generation Aircraft written by Hashim H. Abada and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next generation aircraft, more specifically NASA aircraft concepts, will include new technologies and make many advancements in fuel economy and noise. However, there are some challenges associated with the latest technologies that NASA is planning to use for the next generation aircraft. For example, these aircraft concepts require large amounts of electrical power to generate the required thrust throughout a notional flight profile. One of the new technologies is using advanced propulsion systems, such as the Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion (TeDP) system, which is significantly different from current aerospace high bypass turbofan based propulsion system. The TeDP propulsion system replaces the traditional turbofan engines with a series of embedded electrical fans. The blended wing body aircraft, N3-X (Boeing 777 class), that NASA proposed will have as many as 14 electric fans mounted on the upper aft surface of the aircraft wings. In addition to improved aircraft efficiency, this propulsion system change will significantly reduce noise generation, and provide the capability of short take-off and landing. A dynamic model of the ducted fan distributed propulsion system was developed and simulated for different notional flight profiles. The results show that the ducted fan distributed propulsion system dynamic model and the control system successfully generate the required thrust for the flights and capture the transient behavior of the system throughout the flight profiles. In addition, the dynamic model was used to model a 50 passenger regional aircraft. This study shows the benefit of both the TeDP system and the flexibility of the developed model. The contribution to knowledge is the evolution of the evaluation model that helps researcher’s understand propulsion systems such as the TeDP system of NASA N+3 class aircraft. By identifying and understanding the principal challenges and possibilities provided by the technology, this research further contributes to defining a roadmap of the new technology propulsion system for future research

Book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research

Download or read book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

Book Electrical Power and Storage for NASA Next Generation Aircraft

Download or read book Electrical Power and Storage for NASA Next Generation Aircraft written by Saif Al-Agele and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next generation aircraft will incorporate more electrical power generation and storage for both a distributed electric propulsion system and onboard subsystems. The power generation in this type of aircraft will require orders of magnitude higher than today's commercial aircrafts, thus producing many challenges. For this reason, a unique, high-powered electric propulsion system primarily powered by a turbo-generator system with electrical storage is being considered. A Simulink/Matlab model has bee created for the electrical power system of the next generation blended wing commercial aircraft proposed by NASA. The components of the electrical system include turbo-generators, generators, battery banks, and electrical distribution systems. This thesis presents the development of the power generation, storage, and transmission of the electrical power required for typical commercial missions. All of the component models are integrated into an aircraft model and used to simulate typical flight profiles. The scalability of the model is demonstrated by developing the required distributed power system for a 50-passenger regional transport aircraft. The benefits of an all-electric aircraft are tremendous, but there are significant challenges in regard to the power generation and distribution requirements.

Book A Reliability Method for the Analysis of Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion Electrical Network Architectures

Download or read book A Reliability Method for the Analysis of Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion Electrical Network Architectures written by Jennifer Catherine Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of goals for four successive generations of cleaner, more efficient subsonic aircraft has been published and championed by NASA; the radically different Turboelectric Distributed Propulsion (TeDP) aircraft was also proposed to meet the long term goals. Such a new aircraft design places a significant additional reliance on the electrical system, requiring architectures that meet specified thrust requirements at a minimum associated weight as well as providing the greatest performance against the proposed emissions targets. This thesis presents a method for evaluating the power and reliability profiles exhibited by a number of electrical propulsion network architectures specific to TeDP aircraft. The method is used to clearly determine the probability that each variation of the network will provide a given level of thrust. Each configuration may be compared in a visual manner, using a formulation developed as part of this thesis, showing the 'best' candidate solutions and establishing how each performs relative to the others in terms of both reliability afforded and thrust provided. A number of case studies are presented within this thesis to demonstrate how the developed method can be applied and secondly to test the effectiveness of bringing additional redundancy to the system and the extent to which the reliability is improved. Sensitivity studies are also undertaken to quantify the extent that component substitutions and alterations impact on network reliability. The overall goal is to establish the features of a TeDP network architecture that consistently exhibits the greatest thrust reliability profile. In conducting this research, the work of this thesis progresses the understanding of the TeDP concept with a particular focus on the NASA N3-X aircraft being used to validate the proposed method. Specifically the knowledge in the area of the concept reliability and predicted failure rates are addressed with recommendations being put forward on how each can be improved. These recommendations form a useful input to the general body of research that is working towards NASA's future long term goals for cleaner more efficient aircraft.

Book Control Optimization of Turboshaft Engines for a Turbo electric Distributed Propulsion Aircraft

Download or read book Control Optimization of Turboshaft Engines for a Turbo electric Distributed Propulsion Aircraft written by Michael Angelo Ramunno and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emissions resulting from fossil fuel consumption across various industries has lead to detrimental effects on the planet's ecosystems. The commercial aircraft industry is attempting to reduce their emissions with the use of more fuel efficient propulsive architectures. The electrification of propulsive systems are considered to be a promising advancement for future aircraft. The architecture under investigation in this study is a turboelectric distributed propulsion system for a regional aircraft that assumes weight, drag, and design improvements that as consistent with a system being deployed in 2035. This This system has the ability for hybridization via an onboard energy storage system, comprising of a battery pack, to further reduce the fuel consumption of this advanced architecture. A quasi-static model was developed with the primary objective of predicting the performance of the propulsion system over the course of a mission. Empirical equations, performance maps, and experimental data was used to calibrate the subsystems of this model. In order to expand the fuel reduction potential of the turboshaft engines, a variable speed free power turbine and a variable area nozzle were added to the engines as additional controls to the engine’s primary throttle. The optimal control strategy of the turbine’s speed and nozzle throat area that minimized the mission fuel consumption was determined and the associated fuel savings have concluded. The results of this study were compared to the same system where the two parameters were held constant at their design values. This analysis was completed for the hybrid and non-hybrid system to determine the optimal control strategy of the engine with and without a secondary source of power and to determine the variation of the control if a secondary source is present. It was concluded that the optimal engine control strategy can obtain a maximum savings of 1.55% over the same system neglecting the two additional controls.
