Book Improving Productivity of Tunnel Boring Machines

Download or read book Improving Productivity of Tunnel Boring Machines written by Nicholas Jencopale and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunneling with tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is one of the most mechanized and sophisticated processes within the construction industry. However, there are considerable risks when venturing down several hundred feet where the conditions cannot be accurately determined in advance. Months and years of planning, engineering, profiling, researching, and scheduling go into a typical tunneling project before any ground breaking event. This thesis discussed in detail the growing technologies of the tunneling process using tunnel boring machines (TBM). First, some background information on tunneling and the use of a TBM was provided to introduce the process and the industry being discussed. A tunnel boring machine is unique to each project based on the ground conditions that will be encountered, the diameter and length of the tunnel, as well as several other technical and dynamic factors. After the introduction, the thesis examined a case study of a tunnel project, the Jollyville Transmission Main for the Water Treatment Plant #4 in Austin, Texas. More specifically, one of the TBMs used will be studied in order to maximize production. The details of this project provide an opportunity to discuss production improvements, scheduling impacts, and project costs. Different methods and their effect on the overall project outcome were compared. The case study information was compared with literature, as well as on-the-job information gained from discussions with the project manager, superintendents, and other on-site personnel. This research concluded that given certain circumstances, the use of a continuous conveyor, rather than the muck car/rail method, has potential for a quicker completion schedule and a greater profit for the contractor.

Book TBM Tunnelling in Jointed and Faulted Rock

Download or read book TBM Tunnelling in Jointed and Faulted Rock written by Nick R. Barton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical guide describes the stage-by-stage development of a method for predicting the penetration rate (PR) and the advance rate (AR) for tunnel boring machines based on an expanded version of the Q-value, QTBM. The author analyzes 145 TBM tunnels that total 1,000km in length. He then develops simple formulae to estimate PR and AR from the QTBM value and to back-calculate QTBM from performance data. The book quantitatively explains actual advance rates as high as five m/hr for one day or as low as 0.005 m/hr for several months. It also covers logging methods, empirical TBM tunnel support design, and numerical verification of support.

Book Introduction to Tunnel Construction

Download or read book Introduction to Tunnel Construction written by David Chapman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunnelling provides a robust solution to a variety of engineering challenges. It is a complex process, which requires a firm understanding of the ground conditions as well as the importance of ground-structure interaction. This book covers the full range of areas related to tunnel construction required to embark upon a career in tunnelling. It also includes a number of case studies related to real tunnel projects, to demonstrate how the theory applies in practice. New features of this second edition include: the introduction of a case study related to Crossrail’s project in London, focussing on the Whitechapel and Liverpool Street station tunnels and including considerations of building tunnels in a congested urban area; and further information on recent developments in tunnel boring machines, including further examples of all the different types of machine as well as multi-mode machines. The coverage includes: Both hard-rock and soft-ground conditions Site investigation, parameter selection, and design considerations Methods of improving the stability of the ground and lining techniques Descriptions of the various main tunnelling techniques Health and safety considerations Monitoring of tunnels during construction Description of the latest tunnel boring machines Case studies with real examples, including Crossrail’s project in London Clear, concise, and heavily illustrated, this is a vital text for final-year undergraduate and MSc students and an invaluable starting point for young professionals and novices in tunnelling.

Book A Theoretical and Experimental Study of Tunnel Boring by Machine with a Emphasis on Boreability Prediction and Machine Design

Download or read book A Theoretical and Experimental Study of Tunnel Boring by Machine with a Emphasis on Boreability Prediction and Machine Design written by Fun-Den Wang and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report discusses the results of the first year of a proposed three year program. The three year program was to perform small and full size linear cutting tests to determine scaling factors relating thrust, torque, specific energy, and cutting coefficient for two linear rock cutting machine sizes used. Also to be studied would be the relative efficiency of various cutter types, particularly roller versus pick type cutters. The main objective of the first year of the contract was the construction of the full size linear cutting machine. Construction and initial testing was successfully completed. (Author).

Book Mechanized Tunnelling in Urban Areas

Download or read book Mechanized Tunnelling in Urban Areas written by Vittorio Guglielmetti and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-01-07 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally, the mechanized excavation of tunnels has intensified in the last two decades, as the number of tunnels being constructed for subways and railway underpasses increases. The subject of mechanized tunnelling in urban areas has not previously received the attention that it deserves, despite there being specific hazards associated with the construction of tunnels in metropolitan areas, including poor ground conditions, water tables higher than the level of tunnels, and subsidence leading to damage to the existing structures on the surface. The application of technologies for achieving the stability of the tunnel and for minimizing surface settlement is described in this book. Accurate characterization of the ground; rigorous assessment and management of risk from design to maintenance; the correct choice of a tunnel boring machine and a plan for the advancement of the tunnel; specific excavation procedures and real-time monitoring of excavation parameters are all discussed in this thorough work.

Book Study of Parameters Impacting Productivity of Tunnel Boring Machines

Download or read book Study of Parameters Impacting Productivity of Tunnel Boring Machines written by Hamed Hashem Pour and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunnel construction has been on the rise for transportation of humans, freight and fluids. For a successful tunneling project, tunneling contractors must have sufficient data about scope of work, project features and characteristics of the ground to estimate the advance rate of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The main objective of this thesis is to study tunneling case histories and literature to analyze TBM productivity based on ground conditions, diameter and the duration of each project. Project data was tabulated and results are reported in this thesis. The methodology used to conduct the literature relied on databases such as ProQuest, Engineering Village, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and ASCE Library. Additionally, Tunnels and Tunneling International Magazine as well as TBM manufactures' websites were studied. The conclusions of this thesis show that in-depth ground investigations, such as using pilot tunnels, will improve construction productivity of tunnel operations. Other factors impacting productivity include compressive strength of rocks or hard ground, rock abrasivity, tunnel diameter, location of project (whether urban or rural), and other factors as determined in this thesis.
