Book excerpt: This book is a reference for Tunisian proverbs, selected after a careful and passionate research in both written and oral data. Enjoyable, instructive, fun-to-share proverbs. Highly recommended to everyone, especially word and semantics lovers. The aurhor has carefully selected this proverbial data and translated the major part of it into English as faithfully as possible. He has deliberately chosen not to explain the proverbs, inviting the reader to use his/her own imagination and metaphor interpretation skills. The reader should enjoy understanding and interpreting the inherent conceptual metaphos in this corpus of proverbial expressions, bearing in mind that proverbs are descriptions of a particular situation that can be applied to a wide range of situations, adopting a 'Generic is Specific' approach in proverb interpretation. Moreover, each different culture -Tunisian culture in this context- has its own metaphorical schema and referencial metaphorical system used in proverbs. The proverbs that the author has selected and translated into English are classified alphabetically. However, the book is divided in subsections with short and catchy, funny titles, just to make this reading experience more rythmical and hence more enjoyable. The second part of this book contains proverbs from Egypt and Syria, in addition to Classical Aranic proverbs selected from Arabic literature and linguistic repertoire.

Book excerpt: The African continent is home to spectacularly expressive human beings: rebellious anti-colonial and opposition leaders, eloquent novelists, political and social activists, comical geniuses, pensive and philosophical poets and intellectuals, as well as a few raving dictators. And the body of proverbial wisdom from Africa alone could fill many volumes. Despite being eminently quotable, Africa is not so readily quoted. Stewart's Quotable Africa covers the whole of Africa - north to south and east to west - and includes memorable statements from hundreds of speakers including Nelson Mandela, Doris Lessing, Chinua Achebe, Julius Nyerere, Kofi Annan among others, as well as biblical passages and proverbs. Julia Stewart has spent over a decade collecting the 5000 plus quotes found in this book, all of them either by Africans or about African subjects.

Book Djeha the North African Trickster

Download or read book Djeha the North African Trickster written by Christa C. Jones and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-08-16 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Djeha—also known as Juha, Jeh’a, and Ch’ha, among many variations—is an iconic figure, the trickster hero of an oral folktale tradition that has existed for centuries. The famous Maghrebian prankster is a poor, cunning, and resourceful character that delights in immoral behavior. Orientalists Auguste Mouliéras (1855-1931) and René Basset (1855-1924) were among the first Frenchmen to collect and translate popular Berber folktales. Today, trickster folktales from Algeria’s mountainous Kabylia region are not well known in the Anglophone world, even though they continue to be highly popular in France and in North Africa. Djeha, the North African Trickster is an annotated, critical translation of Auguste Mouliéras’s folktale collection Les Fourberies de Si Djeh’a, first published in French in 1892. The volume contains sixty tales and an in-depth introduction in which Christa C. Jones discusses jocular literature in Islam, the widespread oral folktale tradition linked to Djeha and his Turkish twin brother Nasreddin Hoca, and the impact of colonialism on the gathering and dissemination of the tales. The trickster is at the center of six themed chapters: “Family and Kinship”; “Animal Tales"; “Faces, Places, or Daily Life in the Village"; “Foodways”; “The Intricacies of Hospitality: Beware of Friends and Foes!"; and “Religion, Death, and the Afterlife.” Each chapter contains ten folktales preceded by a short introduction that contextualizes the pieces using historical, folkloristic, literary, and ethnographical sources. Ultimately, the book contributes to the preservation of an ancestral oral heritage, delivering this enduring character to new audiences.
